Temperance Flowerdew

edit

Hey, Applephile. I made a series of edits to this page, largely whittling it down because so much of it was collateral information not related to either the subject or what makes (may make) her notable; only later did I take a look at your self-discarded changes. You seem to have been doing a bit of digging through the references, and for the sake of accuracy it would probably be good if you took a look at what I've done, and correcting it where I seem to have stepped in it. I don't know that we need to say much more about her, but what we do say should be right, e.g., the fact of her (apparent) first marriage! Want to give it a shot? You seem to have done a good job on it. I'll leave it to you. The only points I notice -

(a) - as you say, it looks like she may have been Temperance Barrow, not Temperance Flowerdew, when she went to Virginia, and if so she probably traveled with her husband.

(b) - since she doesn't appear in records from 1609 - 1625, there's no way of knowing if she survived the Starving Time (with or without husband) or went back to England and then returned. This is a quibble, only really relevant if surviving the Starving Time is the reason for her notability. Basis for notability should probably be provable.

(c) - my own view is that the main point of interest about her is that she came from a family much higher up the ranks than Yeardley's own, and thus his marriage to her could be seen as part of his strategy to improve his position-- which succeeded. But this is a subjective view of course.

(d) - their daughter Elizabeth wasn't the one who married George Harmenson. That was Argoll's daughter, a couple of generations later. No marriage known for Temperance's daughter Elizabeth

Thanks for taking it on Applephile (talk) 17:54, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
