So you know something about Canadian Art... edit

--excellent! You may be just the editor I've been looking for. Canadian art is poorly covered in general on Wikipedia, so welcome again. Here are some articles that might benefit from your attention:

I hope you will like it here and choose to stay. Lithoderm (talk) 01:21, 21 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've got a hard copy file on Lismer and Casson. As soon as I've learned how to correctly cite the material I'll get to work!

Friendly instructions edit

Creating articles on contemporary artists is tricky on Wikipedia. They have to relatively well-established, with a body of criticism, to merit their own articles. See the requirements for notablilty.

So just make sure there are plenty of written references. You don't want to get involved in a dispute over deletion like this, it's not the best experience to go through as a first-time editor.

When linking someone's name in a list, make sure of whom the link directs to before saving the page. This is done by pressing the preview button, right-clicking the link in the preview, and selecting open link in new tab. For example, Gord Smith links to an article about a hockey player with that name. What you might do instead is create a short article on Gord Smith (sculptor):

Gord Smith, (October 8, 1937,Montreal- ) is a Canadian sculptor who sculpts geometric forms in metal and wood. His artwork is in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, The Montreal Museum of Fine Art, and the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art.

Adding references is easy, you don't even have to learn the Harvard style of citation. Simply copy and paste this template into a list of references and fill in the relevant information:

(note that not all of these spots have to be filled in; only the title, date, publisher, and author are required)

To add inline citations, put this template in the body of the text where the footnote should go:

If you link to a url, you will need to format it by placing a single bracket on either side, making sure that the http:// prefix is included in the address. The easiest way to do this is to cut and paste the address from the browser bar. (I noticed that on your user page). If you link a url, the address goes first, then after a space, the text to be displayed goes inside the bracket also.

Then add reflist under the references heading.

The page now looks like this:

Gord Smith, (October 8, 1937,Montreal- ) is a Canadian sculptor who sculpts geometric forms in metal and wood. His artwork is in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art.

Honors
*1967- member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts
References
Reflist

Next comes categorization. These category lists go to the bottom of the page and make it easier for other people to find the page.

sculptor-stub

And now the page is done! Hopefully, it won't be speedily deleted. You can help it by adding any written refs you have under the references heading at the page I created. If you need any further help, see Wikipedia:How to edit a page or Wikipedia:Cheatsheet. Or you can just leave me a message on my talk page.
Good luck, Lithoderm (talk) 22:37, 25 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Artists edit

Any of them is a valid topic as long as the article contains valid sources independent of the subject (such as newspaper or magazine profiles or coverage of their gallery shows, etc.) and doesn't just cite the artist's own blog or website as its only reference.
