WikiCup 2012 June newsletter

Apologies for the lateness of this letter; our usual bot wasn't working. We are now entering round 4, our semi-finals, and have our final 16. A score of 243 was required to reach this round; significantly more than 2011's 76 points, and only a little behind 2010's 250 points. By comparison, last year, 150 points in round 4 secured a place in the final; in 2010, 430 were needed. Commiserations to Pool A's igordebraga (submissions), who scored 242 points, missing out on a place in the round by a whisker. However, congratulations to Pool B's Grapple X (submissions), whose television articles have brought him another round victory. Pool A's Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second overall, with an impressive list of biological did you knows, good articles and featured articles. Third overall was Pool D's Muboshgu (submissions), with a long list of contibutions, mostly relating to baseball. Of course, with the points resetting every round, the playing field has been levelled. The most successful Pool was Pool D, which saw seven into the final round. Pool B saw four, C saw three and Pool A saw only the two round leaders.

A quick note about other competitions taking place on Wikipedia which may be of interest. There are 13 days remaining in the June-July GAN backlog elimination drive, but it is not too late to take part. August will also see the return of The Core Contest- a one month long competition first run in 2007. While the WikiCup awards points for audited content on any subject, The Core Contest about is raw article improvement, focussing heavily on the most important articles on Wikipedia. There's nothing related to NPA regarding comments about proper prose. Kruje-Shkoder region makes the districts of Shkodër, Pukë, Lezhë, Mirditë, Kurbin possible, and Zaharia held Sati and Dagnum, and Spani held mountains behind Drivasto. In the vicinity, there is a "Mise" and "Myselimi" in Postribë. "Mushan" in Dajç. And some more toponyms which might be connected, but nothing can be known without scholarship. It is obviously impossible to verify your claim about the draft you started since it is in offwiki space. You expect me to AGF in your case which is not easy because:

1. your request is unnecessary harsh (so please don't add yet another article with disconnected sentences etc.)
2. this is not the first time you write me comments like this (i.e. diff). It was described as incivility and you were warned not to engage in further ethno-nationalist tendentious editing ...misrepresenting sources .... in incivility or personal attacks.
3. you yourself started two articles in the mainspace right after I started drafts in my userspace (link).

Battle of Ankara

71.178.108.23 latest additions to the Battle of Ankara would appear to be original research. His sentence, "Also, his role in the battle was differently interpreted: he was commanding right flank [13] or not being seen in commanding role."[14][15]

• 14. "History of the Byzantine State", does not mention Stefan Lazarevic, nor does it mention any other commanders under Bayezid and only mentions the battle in passing. This source needs a quote for verification.
• 15. "The Turkish empire: its growth and decay", by Baron George Shaw-Lefevre Eversley.

1.I am very interested in this Baron George Shaw Levevre Eversley's qualifications.

2.The book does NOT state that Stefan Lazarevic wasn't in command of the left wing. Nor does it state anyone else being in command of the left wing.[1]

3.Copyrighted in 1917, where methodology and historiography come into question.

WikiCup 2012 July newsletter

We're approaching the beginning of 2012's final round. Pool A sees Cwmhiraeth (submissions) as the leader, with 300 points being awarded for the featured article Bivalvia, and Pool B sees Grapple X (submissions) in the lead, with 10 good articles, and over 35 articles eligible for good topic points. Pool A sees Muboshgu (submissions) in second place with a number of articles relating to baseball, while Pool B's Ruby2010 (submissions) follows Grapple X, with a variety of contributions including the high-scoring, high-importance featured article on the 2010 film Pride & Prejudice. Ruby2010, like Grapple X, also claimed a number of good topic points; despite this, not a single point has been claimed for featured topics in the contest so far. The same is true for featured portals.

Currently, the eighth-place competitor (and so the lowest scorer who would reach the final round right now) has scored 332, more than double the 150 needed to reach the final round last year. In 2010, however, 430 was the lowest qualifying score. In this competition, we have generally seen scores closer to those in 2010 than those in 2011. Let's see what kind of benchmark we can set for future competitions! WikiCup 2012 August newsletter

The final is upon us! We are down to our final 8. A massive 573 was our lowest qualifying score; this is higher than the 150 points needed last year and the 430 needed in 2010. Even in 2009, when points were acquired for mainspace edit count in addition to audited content, 417 points secured a place. That leaves this year's WikiCup, by one measure at least, our most competitive ever. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

1. Grapple X (submissions) once again finishes the round in first place, leading Pool B. Grapple X writes articles about television, and especially The X-Files and Millenium, with good articles making up the bulk of the score.
2. Miyagawa (submissions) led Pool A this round. Fourth-place finalist last year, Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, and has reached the final primarily off the back of his massive number of did you knows.
3. Ruby2010 (submissions) was second in Pool B. Ruby2010 writes primarily on television and film, and scores primarily from good articles.
4. Casliber (submissions) finished third in Pool B. Casliber is something of a WikiCup veteran, having finished sixth in 2011 and fourth in 2010. Casliber writes on the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. Over half of Casliber's points this round were bonus points from the high-importance articles he has worked on.
5. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second in Pool A. Also writing on biology, especially marine biology, Cwmhiraeth received 390 points for one featured article (Bivalvia) and one good article (pelican), topping up with a large number of did you knows.
6. Muboshgu (submissions) was third in Pool A. Muboshgu writes primarily on baseball, and this round saw Muboshgu's first featured article, Derek Jeter, promoted on its fourth attempt at FAC.
7. Dana Boomer (submissions) was fourth in Pool A. She writes on a variety of topics, including horses, but this round also saw the high-importance lettuce reach featured article status.
8. Sasata (submissions) is another WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist in 2009 and 2010. He writes mostly on mycology.

However, we must also say goodbye to the eight who did not make the final, having fallen at the last hurdle: GreatOrangePumpkin (submissions), Ealdgyth (submissions), Calvin999 (submissions), Piotrus (submissions), Toa Nidhiki05 (submissions), 12george1 (submissions), The Bushranger (submissions) and 1111tomica (submissions). We hope to see you all next year.

On the subject of next year, a discussion has been opened here. Come and have your say about the competition, and how you'd like it to run in the future. This brainstorming will go on for some time before more focused discussions/polls are opened. No problem, thank you for helping here. As a newer user, I am all about learning and have been learning much from Antid who gave me this NPA warning, to which my reaction was also "What ..? That was not a comment on the contributor in any meaningful sense or a comment to which a WP:NPA warning seems relevant — But since he is so experienced a user, he must be illustrating both the standard and the method of how to address it." Rereward, frankly, I think you're focusing too much on things you don't like about the way Antidiskriminator speaks to you. Please try to look past that to whatever point it is that's being made, because I don't find AD's tone any different from what's normal all over this site. It might be agreeable if there was never ever the slightest tinge of sarcasm in talkpage comments and edit summaries, but, well, as long as the comments aren't sneering and unpleasant, it tends to be regarded as acceptable. And if you think AD was sneering at you in the conversation you linked or the edit summary you quoted there, I think you might be overinterpreting his wording. Please think about it. These are very interesting questions, but they are also hard to answer.

Big number of unassessed articles. Indeed, almost 3,000. Also, quite probably, a sizable number of untagged articles. ([4][5][6]). This should be treated like a backlog, really. Article assessment is not a straightforward task, so it is naturally suited to more experienced editors. Plan: find some candidates, give them a tool or two, initiate project-wide discussions whenever something's doubtful, try to generate awareness and interest in the wider circle of editors. And hard work, of course...

Lack of editors who are active in the project. Same problem for WP Croatia, obviously: less than 30 active members. Fortunately, some of them are really outstanding contributors, and I guess this is what compensates for the lack of brute force. No easy solutions here. Plan: identify non-members who contribute within the scope and invite them, and motivate members to contribute more. The members should be aware of each other's work, the project's page should advertise it - this is a powerful motivation.

Introduction of formal assessment procedures. My guess is the less formal the better, especially in the beginning. Whether the project needs e.g. an assessment subpage is anyone's guess, it's hard to say. It's important for members to be aware of assessment process, even if they are themselves not familiar with the mechanism - they could always inquire in the project's talk page ("Hey, I've just written an article about XY, how would you assess it?").

Any other thing you think could help WikiProject Serbia. I like DYKs. (And so do you, apparently...) It is gratifying for the editor, it is good for Wikipedia as a very strong generator of above-average quality content, and it is good for the project (content, visibility, cooperation, motivation). Apart from the outdated sources that you shouldn't have been using either way and the use of out of context quotes from some sources, you've misrepresented almost every quote you've used. As examples I've added the quotes you've used from Buda's work on the talkpage. Also you can't copy almost half a page from Inalcik as that's WP:COPYVIO. Given our previous and ongoing interactions at Territory of the Military Commander in Serbia and Pavle Djurisic, I consider your recent appearance at Operation Southeast Croatia and your comments there (reflecting your perception of events at Territory of the Military Commander in Serbia) are a classic case of WP:WIKIHOUNDING. I appreciate there is some overlap in the articles we are interested in, but you have not previously shown any interest in Operation Southeast Croatia, or any of the Seven Enemy Offensives. Your decision to oppose the recent move there (in retrospect after consensus had been achieved for the move, which is consistent with the approach User:DIREKTOR and myself have taken to the Seven Enemy Offensives articles over several months), appears on face value to be an attempt to follow my edits to cause me distress, and gives rise to the suspicion it is being done out of revenge for a perceived slight because you have not been able to gain consensus for your preferred move at Territory of the Military Commander in Serbia. The move of Operation Southeast Croatia is not clearly a violation of WP policy, which would be your only possible excuse for following my edits (and move) at that article. Your behaviour is disrupting my enjoyment of editing for no overriding reason that is acceptable on WP. I am happy to continue to discuss the move with you at Talk:Operation Southeast Croatia, as I do not want you to feel that I am using this request as a means of circumventing discussion there, but I must warn you that any future appearance by you on articles that I am actively contributing to, but you have not shown any interest in before (in the sense of opposing my editing without an overriding reason), will be reported immediately as WP:WIKIHOUNDING. WikiCup 2012 September newsletter

We're over half way through the final, and so it is less than a month until we know for certain our 2012 WikiCup champion. Grapple X (submissions) currently leads, followed by Sasata (submissions), Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and Casliber (submissions). However, we have no one resembling a breakaway leader, and so the competition is a long way from over. Next month's newsletter will feature a list of our winners (who are not necessarily only the finalists) and keep your eyes open for an article on the WikiCup in a future edition of The Signpost. The leaders are already on a par with last year's winners, but a long way from the huge scores seen in 2010. That said, a repeat of the competition from 2010 seems unlikely.

It is good to see that three-quarters of our finalists have already scored bonus points this round. This shows that, contrary to criticism that the WikiCup has received in the past, the competition does not merely incentivise the writing of trivial articles; instead, our top competitors are still spending their time contributing to high-importance articles, and bringing them to a high standard. This does a great service to the encyclopedia and its readers. Thank you, and good work!

Help with the assessment

There is a tool that could help with the unassessed WP Serbia articles. The idea is to find articles which are unassessed by WP Serbia, yet are already assessed by some other project. So, for example:

• Unassessed by WP Serbia, but assessed as B by at least one other project: http://toolserver.org/~magnus/catscan_rewrite.php?depth=3&categories=Unassessed+Serbia+articles%0D%0AB-Class+articles&ns%5B1%5D=1&doit=1
• Unassessed by WP Serbia, but assessed as C by at least one other project: http://toolserver.org/~magnus/catscan_rewrite.php?depth=3&categories=Unassessed+Serbia+articles%0D%0AC-Class+articles&ns%5B1%5D=1&doit=1
• Etc., it is a matter of supplying the parameters. (Although it may not work for Stub and Start, as these classes are too large for the tool.)

For these articles, the existing class could be copied to WP Serbia banner. Note however that not all assessments are reliable: e.g. Timok (river), assessed as B, is a bit thin in referencing and looks more like a C class.

With the same tool one can also find articles that were assessed by WP Serbia as X, and by some other project as Y (Y<>X). These cases can be inspected further then. GregorB (talk) 17:31, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Well, there are no clear rules regarding importance (and that's part of what I meant when I said it "can't be made easy"). Generally speaking:

• Rivers will probably range from high to low
• Mountains too: very prominent ones are "high", important ones "mid", merely notable ones "low"
• Cities (for Croatia, this means that every designated city) are at least "mid". These are chiefly settlements with population of more than 5000, so villages and remaining towns are invariably assessed as "low".

To me, the difference between "mid" and "low" is best explained as follows:

Importance assessment	Mid	Low
Could be described as...	Important	Notable, but not important
Average native person has heard of it and knows something about it	Very likely	Probably not
Likely to appear in a national paper encyclopedia	Very likely	Somewhat likely to very unlikely

Maybe, but there's no pressing need for those unless considerable numbers of editors perform such ratings - in which case their efforts need be coordinated. On the quality rating subject, I took a look at Politikin Zabavnik (rated B): I'd say it's close to B, but at least some references are missing - a B-Class article should be fully referenced using inline citations, but some paras in that one lack citations. If I were you I'd tag it as a C and add {{cn}} tags where necessary (not as criticism per se, but pointers what need be added).--Tomobe03 (talk) 11:22, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Yes, you are right, both in case of Politikin Zabavnik (where I copied B class rating from WP Comics) and in case of "considerable numbers of editors" who perform such ratings. In order to attract more editors to resolve this huge backlog of unassessed articles I had an idea, besides 'moba' idea, to organize some kind of competition (diff). If there are that many editors (presumably some of them misguided although acting in good faith), a review of some of the assessments may be useful. Wikiproject Good Articles employs a system (see Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/GAN backlog elimination drives/June-July 2012) where 80% of GA reviews are themselves reviewed. In this case, that need not be that comprehensive, as I suspect it would be beneficial to have more experienced editors revisit 100% of those articles rated as B-Class and a couple of those assessed as C-Class by an individual editor performing the assessments. The reason for the former is to verify if something has been missed (that's possible even if a fairly experienced editor performed the rating) and the latter to take a look if a C-Class rating was applied too conservatively (or conceivably too relaxed) and advise that specific editor or even inspect more of their rating-edits if need be. Involving more editors in the drive will invariably lead to more work done and more erroneous ratings applied, but it is important to involve as many as possible and to devise a verification system to ensure that all the work amounts to an objective result allowing the wikiproject to develop more efficiently (i.e. map out a route to more featured and good content).--Tomobe03 (talk) 12:16, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

I hadn't noticed that you had added back your POV oversimplifaction regarding the Spani family without a consensus in March, but apparently Gaius did notice it, so it'd be prudent to continue on the talkpage. That being said, why did you try to add your views about Sinë on Skanderbeg? You proposed your OR a few months ago, but it was rejected on the talkpages. It'd be prudent to stick to consensus and not try to add back your views whenever you consider the "opposition" to them to be minimal. With Regard to the Inclusion of Serbs under the List of "Victims" within "The Holocaust" Template

This is what Diana wrote in response to my most recent post on the “Talk” page of “The Holocaust” template: “I will not be reponding on this topic any further, but will continue to watch.” I am rather offended that she would come along and erase “Ethnic Serbs” from the list of “Victims” and then decide to not participate in our argument when she can’t produce a response to my post. Clearly, “a holocaust” – at the very least – was perpetrated against the Serbs, alongside Jews and Romani in the Independent State of Croatia.

In my opinion, the so-called peacemaker is being a troublemaker. He’s not at all confronting any of my arguments because he simply cannot. What I believe we must do is specify that what is meant by “Victims” in the template of interest is the wider spectrum of Holocaust victims, which includes ethnic Serbs. Before we do that, however, I suggest we get a logical and sensible Wikipedia editor to come in and tell all of them (Peacemaker, Dianna, etc.) that their argument is totally flawed and that ethnic Serbs should be included under the list of “Victims”. That will further legitimize our planned edit.

I started adding references to the article Treaty of Nis (1739) and ended up at Kingdom of Serbia (1718–1739). My conundrum is the second paragraph in the article where it states, "The Habsburg Serbian crownland was a period of Golden Age for local Serbs, in which the territorial political structure was basically built up from the very foundations". Which has two citations and no references. However, according to Hupchick's, The Balkans, page 213, "Although brief Habsburg occupation of Ottoman Serbia (1718-1739) was oppressive and exploitative, it also benefited the Serbs." That you can use Google books to find reliable anglophone sources instead of continuously employing questionable domestic sources that are 1) controversial to other involved parties and 2) difficult to corroborate. Look what I for example found by a simple Google books search relating to the Sanjak of Novi Pazar: Historically, Sanjak was a constituent part of Bosnia and Hercegovina. It had a special autonomous status until 1878, when it was separated from Bosnia and Hercegovina. It existed as an independent political territory until 1912 but was subsequently occupied by Serbia and Montenegro after the Balkan wars. During this period 40.000 Muslims were expelled by Serbian authorities... - Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization: Yearbook. Kluwer Law International, 1996, p. 112 [9]. I think a large portion of the "Sanjak articles" will require a substantial source revision, including the presented source would be a good start. Don't forget, reliable sources is a great first step towards NPOV. Domestic Balkan sources have earned notoriety for specific reasons, not least the academic propaganda preceding the Yugoslav wars and which continue to this this day, and they will as such remain an isolated category in the international academia for a long while. However, it is not difficult to understand why you would prefer e.g. SANU, let's not play silly shall we? The traditional Serb nationalist attempt is to cut any Bosnian/Bosniak continuity into as many small tiny pieces as possible to the point that Bosnia has been reinvented every 20 years or so. And don't forget, Be cautious with major changes: consider discussing them first. With large proposed deletions or replacements, it may be best to suggest changes in a discussion, to prevent edit warring and disillusioning either other editors or yourself (if your hard work is rejected by others). . But making a blanket revert back to it after another user has gone to the trouble of correcting your grammar [11][12] is doubly irresponsible, and completely unacceptable. I know you as a native Serbian speaker probably find it difficult to get the definite articles in English right. Nobody can blame you for making errors with these when you speak or write spontaneously. But what the Wikipedia community can and must demand of you is that after you have written something, you should invest the time to go over your own writing and monitor it for such mistakes. Even if you can't avoid making them, you can find most of them and correct them, with a bit of effort and the help of a grammar book. Nobody is forcing you to write quickly on Wikipedia. Take the time to check what you write. Failure to do so cannot simply be excused because you are a non-native speaker; it is irresponsible laziness. And before you revert somebody else, you are expected to actually read their diff, and when you notice that part of the diff consists of corrections to your grammar, it is a simple demand of editorial integrity to respect those corrections and not revert them blindly, as you did.
