Charles Lyell edit

Hi Anticline, just to explain why I reverted your edit at Charles Lyell. The Manual of style says that "Headings should not normally contain links".

Thanks for improving George Bellas Greenough - he gets a bit of a bad press sometimes. Mikenorton (talk) 14:23, 9 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello Mike - thanks for explaining
Sorry, I thought it would be useful to link to the other page on Principles of Geology on Wikipedia. I'm not an experienced editor but happy to add odd bits where I have knowledge and time. I agree Greenough is often seen as the 'bad guy' when in reality he did much good stuff for geology (particularly back room politicking) and was an interesting character - but perhaps as a UCL graduate I'm biased!
Anticline (talk) 14:58, 9 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
That's alright, we need as many knowledgeable editors as we can get. There is already a link to the Principles of Geology a few lines further down in the Charles Lyell article, see Charles_Lyell#Details_of_publication.
By the way, I moved your reply to under my comment and indented it to show that you were replying - I hope that was OK. Mikenorton (talk) 15:08, 9 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

October 2013 edit

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to William Conybeare (geologist) may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:

File permission problem with File:Geocapabilities Project Logo.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Geocapabilities Project Logo.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:19, 23 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ken Hawley edit

Hi, regarding the Ken Hawley article, you are going into far too much trivial detail, some of which isn't sourced and some of which is unacceptably sourced to, for example, website forums. Please can you fix these issues, even if it means removing the content. Thanks. - Sitush (talk) 11:34, 11 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Sorry but I had to jump in because there was some copyright violation in there. You have to be very careful to paraphrase sources rather than copy/paste the things. See WP:COPYRIGHT. - Sitush (talk) 12:46, 11 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Ken Hawley 2 edit

Good afternoon, Firstly, thank you for writing this article initially and secondly thank you for your comments. You clearly have the advantage over me in terms of being an experienced contributor to Wikipedia. However I am writing to justify and explain my amendments to your original article. Some of the amended information is sourced from myself (as Ken Hawley's son), which corrects errors made in some of the published sources/obituaries and other information is from the Memorial event held to celebrate Ken Hawley's achievements on October 9th 2014. Much of this will be published in the near future by The Ken Hawley Collection Trust, on their website or via documents produced for the Museums Council and these will be added as sources when publicly available. In themeantime, much of the amended/added information can be verified by watching the biographical videos of Ken Hawley, where he clarifies some of the points and highlights what he considers to be important background to his collecting expertise and knowledge - this is a valid source - it is primary source of information.. Another key source (not used in your original article) is Derek Bateson's book 'The Ken Hawley Experience', which drew on detaled interviews with Ken Hawley and ken Hawley's private sources. I have cited these where approriate and will add others as they are published. I think you can rest assured that I have attempted to create a more authoritative article for these amendments and I trust you will restore some of them....and if you ever visit Sheffield I would be delighted to show you around The Hawley Gallery that houses the collection of this remarkable man.

With respect to the copyright problem - I will obtain permission from the author and look at re-phrasing. The information is factual rather than opinion - it states what the collection holds - and I did reference the source used. In terms of previous copyright issue, which you cite - the issue was not an issue - in that I was part of the project that had created the queried image - and there was no copyright issue - it resulted from my inexpereinced navigation of the Wikipedia process.

Whilst I think that Wikipedia is a valuable 'organism' and that there must be governing principles to assure its credibility, its 'editors' (in which I include yourself) must also recognise that people contribute time and effort into attempting to improve articles. Damage will no doubt be done by a few rogue individuals - but most of us are attempting to offer what knowledge of good quality we have to help others know and understand.

--Anticline (talk) 14:24, 11 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Ah, I rather thought that this might be the case. You can't add copyrighted stuff as you have done, period, but we now have conflict of interest as an additional concern. You probably should not be editing the article at all and should instead be confining yourself to Talk:Ken Hawley. I know that you mean well but we have policies for a reason. There is, of course, nothing to stop you writing about your father anywhere else, eg: using a Wordpress blog. - Sitush (talk) 14:36, 11 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

January 2015 edit

Your addition to Ken Hawley has been removed, as it appears to have added copyrighted material to Wikipedia without permission from the copyright holder. If you are the copyright holder, please read Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for more information on uploading your material to Wikipedia. For legal reasons, Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted text, or images borrowed from other websites, or printed material without a verifiable license; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites or publications as a source of information, but not as a source of content, such as sentences or images—you must write using your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Sitush (talk) 13:46, 11 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

You are not only breaching copyright but also inserting huge amounts of unsourced material within existing sourced material, which is confusing and plain wrong. Furthermore, what you may have been told by Hawley's son is not reliable. You are going to find yourself in big trouble if you repeat this - please review our three-revert rule and our attitude to edit warring more generally. - Sitush (talk) 13:49, 11 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Notice of Edit warring noticeboard discussion edit

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion involving you at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring regarding a possible violation of Wikipedia's policy on edit warring. Thank you. - Sitush (talk) 13:59, 11 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Comments from someone at the edit warring noticeboard edit

Hello, Anticline; I looked at the discussion at the edit warring noticeboard, and I have a few notes that should prove useful. First, please note that you're not going to be blocked or otherwise get in trouble now, but I need to remind you that you may well be blocked if you continue what you've been doing. As far as copyright, I understand what you say about being at least a contributor to the work you've brought in here, but we can't trust that: not because you've been untrustworthy, but because there's no way to verify what someone says here. Basically, we're trying to protect copyright, as anyone can create an account and claim to be the copyright holder, and there's no easy way to determine whether you're Ken Hawley's son or whether you're a teenager in Kyrgyzstan. With that in mind, your best route is to do as you suggested and simply paraphrase the source, although you're free to follow the "Donating copyrighted materials" link that Sitush gave you — it's a bit of work, but it is possible to verify that you're Hawley's son. I can help you with that if you wish.

The edit-warring warning is talking about how you were simply undoing Sitush several times; our articles need to be stable, so simply hitting "undo" isn't helpful even if your version is better. If you go back to hitting "undo" a lot, you may be blocked, but discussing is helpful: it's much better to explain the situation, as you did in your "Good afternoon" statement a little while ago. Finally, let me stress what Sitush said about conflicts of interest — as his son, you have what we define as a conflict of interest, so please don't modify his article; our policies prefer that articles be written by people unaffiliated with/unrelated to their subjects. However, we're not trying to tell you to go away: as his son, you know the sources far better than the rest of us, so we'd appreciate it if you'd use the article's talk page to explain what should be changed. In particular, it can be helpful if you ask us to change certain things, or if you put a modified form of the article on the talk page, so we can see exactly what you want us to change. Just please remember that articles need to be based on published sources, either print or online, because it's important that information in our articles be verifiable by anyone, not just by the people who were involved in a situation.

Finally, let me know if you have any questions, and I'll be happy to help; leaving a message at my talk page will be the easiest way to reach me. Nyttend (talk) 20:02, 11 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Your draft article, Draft:Geocapability edit

Hello, Anticline. It has been over six months since you last edited your WP:AFC draft article submission, entitled "Geocapability".

The page will shortly be deleted. If you plan on editing the page to address the issues raised when it was declined and resubmit it, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code. Please note that Articles for Creation is not for indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace.

Dear Geowriter,
Thanks for your message and vigilance.
The material written on the HOGG and Geological Society of London websites was written by me on behalf of the History of Geology Group.
I am the Chairperson and (Acting) Secretary of the History of Geology Group - should you wish to verify this you will find my contact email at https://www.geolsoc.org.uk/Groups-and-Networks/Specialist-Groups/History-of-Geology-Group/ and if you send me an email I will happily respond accordingly.
The updated HOGG entry to the History of Geology Wikipedia page is approved by the HOGG Committee and as such is not a violation of copyright.
Therefore we respectfully request that you retain the edit as updated earlier today to ensure an accurate description of the History of Geology Group (HOGG).

Thanks for your prompt reply. The above message that was sent and signed by me at 19:14 on 12 August 2022 is a standard copyright template message created by Wikipedia copyright specialists. The text has not been written by me, it has been generated automatically by a predefined command that any editor who finds a possible copyright violation sends to the editor who added the problematic text to a Wikipedia article. The copyright violation/permission validation process is controlled by Wikipedia administrators. (Only they can decide if the copyright conditions are satisfied in accordance with Wikipedia's policies and only they can unhide the now hidden text in the History of geology article). I am not a Wikipedia administrator; I'm (only) a Wikipedia editor who has identified and reported the copyright problem and I believe that I have no further role in resolving the problem. Please follow the instructions in the message sent at 19:14 about establishing your association with HOGG and granting of permissions to use the content from the cited source web pages. I also strongly recommend that you comment (eg. repeat most of the comments you have already made here) about this copyright problem at Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2022 August 12 because administrators will probably not be monitoring this discussion on your talk page. Thanks. GeoWriter (talk) 22:05, 12 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Anticline, I looked at https://www.geolsoc.org.uk/Groups-and-Networks/Specialist-Groups/History-of-Geology-Group/ and at the bottom it says "© 2012 The Geological Society of London, registered charity, number: 210161" so the material can't be used here. There are two ways to proceed here. You can mark all the necessary pages at www.geolsoc.org.uk with a licence that is compatible with Wikipedia. Or you can follow the instructions above and reproduce here,
