Colonial forces of Australia

G'day, mate, hope you enjoyed the holiday. If you aren't too busy with the new posting/move, would you mind taking a look at this: Colonial forces of Australia? I'm slowly trying to add citations and clean it up. Its a pretty big job, though. In the meantime, I've created this: List of British Army regiments that served in Australia between 1810 and 1870. It's probably my last article for a bit as work will be hectic next week. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 12:37, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Howdy. Long week at work so far and its not over yet (boss seems ok though so thats a good start)... House is good and we have pretty much completed the move now, but I still haven't unpacked my books so my project has languished for about three weeks now. I'll have a look for sure but probably won't be able to add much until I've got my library set up again. Internet connection here is terrible also (but given the way the project has recently been hijacked for political purposes I'm starting to question if I want to support Wikipedia anyway). How's things your end? Anotherclown (talk) 10:09, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
Ack to that. I thought of quietly retiring and taking up that writing offer I got from ADB. Sadly, I got drawn back in, though. I've gotten a couple of books out of the DLS. Stanley's The Remote Garrison and Kuring's Redcoats to Cams, so that might help. Anyway, work wise – very busy week. Run off my feet, which is probably good given that the left one is still busted. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 08:05, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi mate, apologies for continuing to tweak this article after kicking off the GAN -- not something I usually do but there it is. Anyway, I think I've got it all out of my system so you should feel safe to review at your convenience... ;-) Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 13:29, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Gday Ian. No worries at all, I wasn't able to get around to doing the review until today anyway due to work committments. Done now. Cheers. Anotherclown (talk) 21:40, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Abusive changes to your user page

Hi, I've just revision deleted a couple of grossly insulting changes which an IP account made to your user page. They also targeted another editor and a non-government organisation, seemingly selected at random. The IP address traces back to the US Navy. Nick-D (talk) 00:35, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

Cheers, I hadn't noticed. Anotherclown (talk) 01:01, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
They've returned. Ian reverted the change, and I've revision deleted the edit and blocked the account. Let me know if you'd like your user page semi-protected: what this scumbag is posting on randomly selected accounts is seriously libelous. Nick-D (talk) 22:23, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks again for this. Should be ok as it seems like its been a couple of days now, however if they do return that would be appreciated. Anotherclown (talk) 09:37, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Dash "fixing" script

I realize this is complaining against the tide, since a number of editors seem to think this "helps", but can you not use your dash replacement script? Normal dash and n-dash look practically identical in some fonts, especially the monospaced editing font. The MOS requires n-dashes for numerical ranges. I find it impossible to verify if a ndash has been used by simple inspection in editing mode if – has been replaced by the unicode character. They appear absolutely identically to the reader, which is why there is no requirement that one or the other be used. Now, if you want to use the unicode character in articles you write because you like it better, go ahead... but please don't change other articles maintained by others to use your preferred format?

An extremely minor issue, I'll grant, but bah, it's still a bit annoying. SnowFire (talk) 18:20, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Hello SnowFire. If you haven't already this is probably something you should bring up with the people that wrote the Advisor script - I'm just a user (so to speak). Best regards. Anotherclown (talk) 22:50, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

P'daele

In 2011 G. Sheffield claimed the opposite though, quoting General von Kuhl, who said "The sacrifices that the British made for the Entente were fully justified." I'm curious as to what the word "though" adds to the sentence and "who said" adds nothing to the quotation since it's in quotation marks and is described as a quotation earlier in the sentence. Not that I'm p'edantic mind....;O)Keith-264 (talk) 23:51, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Gday Keith. Sorry missed this somehow. Feel free to reword - the main issue I saw was the fact that it didn't start with a capital letter, the rest I added in attempt to turn it into a sentence. Anotherclown (talk) 10:39, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Battle of Elands River (1900)

G'day, AC, when you get back from your course, I wonder if you would be keen to knock up a map. I'm wanting to eventually take the Battle of Elands River (1900) article to GA, but I feel it needs a map before I do. I know you don't rate the maps you've created in the past, but they look okay to me, so if you are keen could you please have a crack at creating one for Elands River? There is some good source information on p. 85 in the first edition of Coulthard-Clark's Enclyclopaedia of Australia's Battles. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 02:24, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Howdy. Sure I'll have a crack - no guarantees though. I need to get Inkscape again as I did these maps on my old computer - hopefully I still have the source material so I can plage a little... Anyway its Sunday night and I'm in the lines having written my Leadership Philosphy (which I didn't think I'd have to do until I hit Major)... should I have a beer in the mess or just go to bed? The eternal question.... Anotherclown (talk) 10:02, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
Always go with the beer, except maybe on the first night of a course. Hmm, now that sounds like a leadership philosophy... ;-) AustralianRupert (talk) 11:09, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

I had to pull an all nighter but I've marked up a map now using Wilcox, so please review and let me know if you need any changes (it seems I've contracted Delhi Belli again so I couldn't sleep anyway). Anotherclown (talk) 15:29, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

Also I've had a very quick look at the article too and it looks pretty good to me (Battle of Elands River I mean). I have vandalised it a little, by which I mean I hope I've made a few improvements. Pls feel free the revert though if they werent. Anyway I'm going to bed now, but I should get the review of 2nd Battalion (Australia) done tommorrow. Anotherclown (talk) 15:55, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
G'day, mate, not got to hear that you're not feeling well. I hope you feel better soon. That map looks great, by the way. I really appreciate your work on that. I'll get you to give me a soldiers' five on making those one day. One minor thing, though, I spotted a typo. Where De la Rey's forces are depicted it says "c. 200-3000", but it should be "c. 2000-3000". In regards to the re-org: looks fine. I've taken out the third level headings now, though, as they didn't seem necessary when they were below second level headings. Finally, I'm just wondering if I should try to work in Pakenham and Wilcox before taking to GAN. Fairly sure that those works are considered pretty definitive for the topic, so it might be considered a failing not to include them. I'll order them from the library next week and once I've worked them in, look to nominate for GAN. What do you think? Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 01:24, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
No worries - its a bit difficult to use Inkscape now as I dont have a mouse but I got it done in the end (plus I actually have no idea how to use it so its fairly time consuming). Its quite a powerful program though. Actually I wondered about the strengths but I forgot to check (it is actually an error in the source). Fixed now. Yes definately need to include Pakenham and Wilcox now I think about it. Anotherclown (talk) 01:40, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

A drink for a Digger

Have one, or six, on me...

G'day, mate, its rotten that we are in different parts of the country this Anzac Day. Definately wanted to buy you one. After the service this morning, I caught up with a mate from 2 who is now down at 1 and had a few, which was good and bad (he's not doing so well, nor are some of the others from the troop). Puts my own little mishap into perspective. Anyway, please accept one of these virtual beers as a sign of my thanks for your service. I can't vouch for the quality of some of these, but you get the idea...Take care. Cheers, AustralianRupert (talk) 05:13, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the drinks (even the Tooheys), but if we are giving out drinks to Diggers you deserve one too (the Tooheys). For the first time in a while I wasn't working/deployed/speaking/marching/escorting some banner on Anzac Day and was able to just remember... Of course all these things are important but it was also good just to be a participant for a change. It would have been great to share a beer with you, but I did get to spend the day with some good friends at least. We should try and catch up again over Christmas. Anotherclown (talk) 10:41, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
Tooheys...thanks. ;-) Ack to Christmas. AustralianRupert (talk) 11:48, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
No worries at all, least I could do. I best go to sleep now, the Musorians are at it again and the war starts again tommorrow. What a pain. Anotherclown (talk) 11:52, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

Battle of Wareo

G'day mate, not sure if you have much time for Wiki these days, but if you are looking to collaborate on something, I wonder if you'd be interested in working on Battle of Wareo. It was created a little while ago by Deathlibrarian. I'm a bit concerned that some of the text that they added is too closely paraphrased from the NSW Lancers Museum site, so I'm trying to rework it (I've listed my concerns on the talk page). However, I'm also in the process of trying to expand it. I've added a background and aftermath, and begun expanding the first of four sections. In terms of sources, I only have Dexter at the moment, though, but really need Johnston's The Magnificent 9th and Coates' Bravery Above Blunder. I think you have both of these, don't you? Anyway, if you are keen to work together, please take a look. If you maybe wanted to work on one of the middle sections (e.g. "Horace's Ears" or "Kalung Lakes"), you could rewrite the paraphrased sections, injecting Johnston and Coates, while I work on writing the two unwritten sections using Dexter. Once you've done your two sections, you could then work in Johnston and Coates into my two sections ("Nongora-Christmas Hill" and "Drive on Kuanko and Wareo"). Also, I'm trying to hunt around for images, but to be honest I'm not sure I can be bothered any more given the whole Commons issue. A map would be a goer, but I can't find one that is suitable in terms of copyright. Anyway, it will be a big job, but once we are done, it could probably be taken to GA or A. Cheers, AustralianRupert (talk) 22:32, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

Howdy - I might need to pike on this one for now I'm afraid. I'm still labouring on Long Tan at the moment but I'm getting close to bashing out a draft (working on the aftermath now... main issue is that I'm really getting sick of the whole project which has now taken me nearly 6 months due to work). Unfortunately its 59 pages in Word currently (nearly 2 x bigger than Coral-Balmoral), so it will need considerable editing and reduction before I can put it into article space. There is so much written on the battle that writting an article which summarises the bulk of the literature is tricky without being verbose (at least for me). If/when I get this done I'll see if I can help with Wareo but you probably shouldn't hold your breath. I'm certainly happy to look up anything in Coates or Johnston for you though. Is there any information in particular you need? Anotherclown (talk) 04:56, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Given the extensive interest in the Battle of Long Tan, you might want to set up some sub-articles for it rather than trim your material too much. Without having seen what you've written, the extent to which the prelude and aftermath of the battle has been debated and the confusion over the size of the communist force would justify stand-alone articles if you have material on this (an order of battle article would be really interesting given that this is surprisingly unclear in most sources - there's a tendency to reduce the battle to D Company 6 RAR versus a large and somewhat amorphous Communist force). Nick-D (talk) 05:43, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
No worries, I understand. I will try to get the two books out of the DLS. Cheers, AustralianRupert (talk) 11:10, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
Sorry mate. Anotherclown (talk) 10:20, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
