WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

Other notable performances were put in by   Sammi Brie,   Thebiguglyalien,   MyCatIsAChonk,   PCN02WPS, and   AirshipJungleman29.

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. Drag Isn't Dangerous archives

Extended content

Hey @Another Believer! So I tried to archive the sources for Drag Isn't Dangerous, and I tried it three times and it wouldn't archive it. Is there any way to fix it? — JuanGLP (talk + contribs) 04:38, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

@JuanGLP I just tried archiving the article's sources and no links were rescued. The tool has already been run on the page, and not all sources archive. I'm no expert on how the tool works, I just use it sometimes, especially if I've added a bunch of citations to an entry. ---Another Believer (Talk) 04:59, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

DYK for Cathy Whims

On 10 May 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Cathy Whims, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Cathy Whims has opened several restaurants in Portland, Oregon, including the Nostrana, which has been described as "Portland's capital of the Negroni"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Cathy Whims. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Cathy Whims), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Promotion of Cherry Valentine

Congratulations, Another Believer! The article you nominated, Cherry Valentine, has been promoted to featured status, recognizing it as one of the best articles on Wikipedia. The nomination discussion has been archived.

Unfortunately, since I've never been involved in GA reviewing at all, I'm not familiar with that set of standards — I've done AFC reviewing of drafts, but what's good enough to get a draft promoted to mainspace and what's good enough to get an article conferred with GA status are obviously two very different things. So I'll certainly take a look at it and let you know if I come across anything really obvious that jumps out at me, but I really couldn't give an authoritative assessment of whether it's GA-worthy or not. Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

Extended content

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

  Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

  Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

@Woodensuperman I wish you would have reached out to me before nominating all of these articles for deletion. Working to expand all of these at once, especially under the pressure and short timeframe of AfD, is very difficult. Also, there is a history of hounding and inappropriately nominating Portland restaurant entries for deletion. In the future, please consider Talk page messages before jumping to AfD. ---Another Believer (Talk) 13:45, 7 June 2023 (UTC)
The article has been there for well over two years. I'm not sure why you are on a mission to create a travel guide to Portland anyway! I think you will see plenty more nominations in the future. --woodensuperman 13:47, 7 June 2023 (UTC)

request for advice

Hi AB, If you have time would you provide guidance? I want to write an article on Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame NGO inductee Open Hand Chicago. I came upon this topic while writing the short article on Lori Cannon. In 2011 the project became Vital Bridges Food Program. Do you think I should write the article for Vital Bridges Food Program with a redirect from Open Hand or vice-versa? Thanks for thinking about this. Best, WAU WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:33, 10 June 2023 (UTC)

@WomenArtistUpdates Hello! Unless sourcing overwhelmingly describes the significance of Open Hand Chicago over Vital Bridges Food Program, I would recommend using the current name Vital Bridges Food Program and redirecting Open Hand Chicago. Thanks so much for your work here on Wikipedia! ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:38, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the response. That is exactly my quandary. Open Hand Chicago was inducted into the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame (thus overwhelming), but Vital Bridges Food Program is still in operation (thus accurate), feeding hungry people. I am overthinking this whole thing and will do as you suggest. Thanks! WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:59, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) On some level it doesn't really matter which name you choose, as you can create a redirect so a user can enter either name and get to the article. Both names can be bolded in the lede when there is a redirect. ☆ Bri (talk) 18:35, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
Hi Bri, I do know about redirects, just couldn't decide which to make the main page. As I said...overthinking :) I will remember to bold both names though. Thanks! WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 20:38, 10 June 2023 (UTC)

Quick Question: Getting Locals Pages Made

Extended content

Hello Another Believer.

I have seen you are an editor that takes pride in editing local pages in areas like Portland, Oregon.
I haven't been having much success lately; in having pages 'created' without getting them marked for deletion.

I've been trying to figure out, if there is a certain criteria for local pages to be made? A couple of local businesses are growing in size as in locations and are slowly becoming a name in the New England area. Yeahimaboss413 (talk) 23:50, 19 June 2023 (UTC)

@Yeahimaboss413 Hello! You are not alone. If you scroll up this page, you'll notice many articles I create about "local topics" are also flagged for deletion (sometimes even when, in my opinion, notability is clearly established). This is just the nature of Wikipedia -- some editors unfamiliar with certain topics will question notability. I wish I had better advice to offer, but all I can recommend is using the best possible sources when creating new entries. Also, consider saving a new page only after you've added 10+ reliable sources which are independent of the subject. That's not an exact rule, but just a suggestion. This might be less triggering for page patrollers and deletionists. Some editors insist you must be able to provide three in-depth profiles published by sources outside the local area, so that might be a litmus test for you to explore as you decide on possible articles to create. I hope this is helpful, and good luck! ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:03, 20 June 2023 (UTC)
I did not expect you to reply so fast, so I got to thank you for that. Yes in a way it was very helpful. Now I know, its varies by some editors, and the more sources I use the better of I could be. If you don't mind I'll surely be bothering you again for some advice. Thanks again, I truly appreciate you answering. Yeahimaboss413 (talk) 00:23, 20 June 2023 (UTC)
No prob! Happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:10, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

Black Coffee Northwest

  Resolved
Extended content

I just saw the link at WP:US50. In my own space I was developing User:Bri/Black Coffee Northwest, and I'll merge content into the new article later today, if it is appropriate. ☆ Bri (talk) 20:57, 26 June 2023 (UTC)

@Bri: Doh! I'm so sorry, and even embarrassed as I've edited that page before. I totally forgot, and my search for "Black Coffee" in both the main space and the draft space yielded no returns, hence why I started a new entry when I read a new Eater Seattle article today about the business. Please feel free to merge the content or article history as you see fit. Or, if you feel strongly, I can even delete my page so you can move yours into the main space. I did not mean to step on your toes, truly! ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:01, 26 June 2023 (UTC)
Not a problem. I'll ask for a history merge and do some more cleanup later. ☆ Bri (talk) 21:02, 26 June 2023 (UTC)
Great!, no worries. If for some reason your histmerge request is rejected, I don't mind moving the current entry into draft space so you can move yours into main space. I'm not worried about getting credit as the original author and I can just as easily fold my content into yours. Let me know if you need anything else from me here. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:07, 26 June 2023 (UTC)

@Bri: I think I've resolved this issue on my own, hopefully in a way which meets your preferences. I moved my page into draft space, then moved your draft into main space. Then I re-pasted my page over yours. Essentially this now credits you for starting the article but now shows my expanded version. Does this solution work for you? If not, I can add back your histmerge request, but my understanding is that only works for copy-and-paste moves. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:17, 26 June 2023 (UTC)

Okay that's fine, I suppose, since I see there were no other editors on your copy. ☆ Bri (talk) 21:51, 26 June 2023 (UTC)
@Bri Ok, thanks! I'll consider this resolved. Sorry again for the short-term memory lapse on my part! ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:53, 26 June 2023 (UTC)

Tips on fair use images

Extended content

I noticed the FAC image discussion for Cherry Valentine recently when I came back to activity (too late to comment on it, unfortunately), so I thought it might be useful to give some advice on fair use images now I've added one back to the article. They can be a little messy, especially at FAC, though honestly 99% of the time you can get away with less than this.

The messiest of the criteria (and the one you were getting asked about at FAC) is 'respect for commercial opportunities'. This is basically "if some news org needs a photo, are they going to pay the rightsholders for one or just take what Wikipedia has?". For fair use images, because they aren't licensed in a way that the hypothetical news org can do that without infringing on someone else's copyright, we want to make sure they don't. For deceased article subjects, the big things to think about here are 1. other times an image has been used commercially (e.g. if it was used in ads for TV appearances) and 2. obituaries. Most obits use images that were provided to them by a corporate rightsholder, and have paid for the rights to use them. Similarly, any image that was used to advertise a person or a TV show or anything else is obviously being used commercially, so it's safer to stay away from them unless you really don't have alternatives.

The safest route for someone like Cherry Valentine is using a selfie, like I did there. Selfies are rarely used commercially, the rights are held by the subject (so they generally go to the family after death, rather than being held by a company), and they're pretty easy to find for somebody popular on social media. Obviously this isn't doable for everyone, but the kind of subjects you write about tend to have a lot of them. Something you can consider for living subjects as well is that some people are willing to license a selfie with a Wikipedia-appropriate license if you ask -- there's a guide to the process for that here -- which can be a way to get free images of a living person with none.

Once you've done that, you can really just fill in the blanks like I did here for the rationale. This is more in-depth than I'd usually do, because of the FAC argument, but here's another recent fair use image upload of mine with a similar one. For a subject like Cherry Valentine who had an article long before she died, it's generally not hard to demonstrate that there aren't free images -- the article would've had one already if there were.

I hope this helps -- it can be a little tricky. Like I said, in most circumstances you can get away with a lot less than this, but this is how to really make sure the fair use rationale works, especially at FAC. It's also helpful when you get the occasional flare-ups of arguments around fair use images (I had an article subject die right in the middle of one, which resulted in an unusually long rationale). Vaticidalprophet 14:27, 27 June 2023 (UTC)

@Vaticidalprophet Thanks so much for the info and for uploading a new image to the article. This is very helpful! ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:03, 27 June 2023 (UTC)
