I took a quick look, and thought I'd give a couple of suggestions. First, for consistancy, try formatting the books using bullets, and using the "Cite » Book » ISBN" - autofill feature. For example:

Hi Skamecrazy123, thanks for your offer. Yes, I do have a problem I wouldn't mind a hand with, to do with licencing of an image I have. Just in case you're not around, I'll also post this to the Tearoom: I've been sent a photo of James ESsinger, for the page James Essinger and he says he is fine with it on Wiki and that it can be used by anyone. Trouble is, I've got totally bogged down in the upload licence rules - there's sooo many, I'm confused how to go about simply saying he's given permission. For instance, I've looked through the licence tags, and haven't a clue which one to use!! If you can guide me through this mire, I'd be very grateful. Thanks ever so much for your ongoing help!! I'm finding it harder than I thought to put the image on. As it turned out, my computer crashed yesterday, and I never got to the Teahouse, so I'm at the same point. I have the email from James Essinger, and also I sent him a standard form for creative commons licence, which he has said he's sent onto the email address provided at the top. I don't know how I would know when the licence has been made, but the photo I uploaded yesterday File:James Essinger 2011.jpg now seems to have disappeared :-S Maybe there was something I did wrong. I'm not sure if to try again already, or whether I need to wait for some sort of confirmation.

Also, I can't find out how to delet the photo I placed on already File:James Essinger.jpg, which James Essinger doesn't like. Is there a delete button on the page I couldn't see?Annelisa02 (talk) 16:26, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

I will ask about that, as I am not sure when the licensing kicks in either, as well as whether you need to try again. As for picture deletion, if you have uploaded it to Wikipedia, then you will need to ask an admin to delete it for you. Also - welcome to the ranks of Wikipedia adoptees! I hope you enjoy learning more about Wikipedia through the program. I plan on operating a two-pronged approach to your adoption:

• Since you're clearly interested in getting the James Essinger article up to scratch, you'll spend a lot of time working on that, learning about Wikipedia's content and sourcing requirements and how to meet them as you do so. James Essinger article - an overview of the issues

Right, now you're all adopted, let's get cracking on this article. I'm going to give you a general overview of the issues that need to be resolved before we put it back into article space - by it's nature, this post will therefore appear somewhat critical, so my apologies in advance for that. What I'd like you to do is edit the page User:Annelisa02/James Essinger to try and resolve as many of these problems as possible - you can do this in your own time, in as many edits or editing sessions as you like; there's no deadline.

• First and formost, as I said on my talkpage, the article doesn't provide sufficient evidence of notability. This is absolutely imperative, since non-notable articles are always deleted sooner or later. There are two sets of criteria that you can use to demonstrate notability.

1. The General Notability Guideline (or GNG for short). The GNG is the baseline requirement for inclusion in Wikipedia; if a subject doesn't meet it, the article is unlikely to stay. The GNG requires significant coverage in multiple, reliable, independent sources. This page explains exactly what those terms mean on Wikipedia.
2. The notability guideline for creative professionals is a supplement (not a replacement) to the GNG. There's a good case for Essinger meeting this; you've pretty much demonstrated that he meets #4, and he has a fighting chance of meeting #1 or #2. However, sources still need to be provided that demonstrate this.

• The scope of an article about James Essinger should be James Essinger. Whilst it's obviously necessary to mention his publications as part of that, the current version of the page is almost entirely devoted to his work, not to the man himself. The scope of the article is therefore very skewed - most of the information about his books needs to be removed, and the information about him needs to be expanded. This may mean that you end up with a much shorter article (in fact, it almost certainly will), but the result will be much more in line with Wikipedia's requirements. Think of it as "streamlining", rather than "excising"...
• There's a distinctly promotional tone to the article - the excessive quotes from (exclusively positive) book reviews give it the appearance of an advert, as do es the long list of publications. Removing most - probably all - of these, per the issue of scope mentioned above, will drastically improve the page.

In summary, I'd suggest you edit the article back to just a short opening paragraph, the biography section and a couple of lines about Jaquard's Web and Spellbound, plus appropriate references. You can then start looking for independent sources that support the remaining information, and meet the GNG requirements outlined above. Don't bin the bits you remove, though, especially the sources (yeah, I'm afraid a lot of them will have to go too) - instead, create a new user subpage called something like User:Annelisa02/James Essinger sources, so that they're ready to hand when you, I or someone else comes to write articles about his books. I'll start work on this as soon as I can. I assure you, I don't mind constructive critisism...how can one learn when one doesn't know where one's gone wrong! I see you have given me some excellent advice here, and have two questions stemming from this:

• the first feels a little silly, but how do I 'create' a page called User:Annelisa02/James Essinger sources? (I think this is why I went straight into putting the page up, because I was a bit confused about this :-S )
• Originally, you suggested writing a page on each of the books, rather than on James Essinger. Would it be easier to start with these? or is a better lesson learnt by going back to the original page and simply learning how to do it properly? And, what if I can't find any other sources that confirm life-details about Mr Essinger? Yep, if you just follow the link and save some text on that page, it will be created (and the red link will turn blue). Whether you create pages on the books first is totally up to you - you'll learn different things from both. Arguably, it's easier to write about books than about people (the guidelines on biographies of living people (BLPs) are quite strict), but if you can write a BLP, other articles will be comparatively straightforward... If you want to try writing article on the books in a userspace page, you can use User:Annelisa02/Jaquard's Web and User:Annelisa02/Spellbound. Yunshui 雲‍水 11:59, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Mining page histories

Here's a handy trick. Your recent edit to the Essinger draft removed the original source for The Ecomomist , which is still used in the article as a source (using the <refname=> tag). You need to replace <ref name=Economist /> with the original reference - but how to find it?

Go to the "View history" tab at the top right of your screen. This will show you all the previous revisions of the page. Click on the "prev" link in the (cur | prev) entry next to your most recent edit. You'll see a record of all the changes you made to the page - including the Economist reference, in its pre-deleted state (for the record, it's this: <ref name=Economist>{{cite news|title=Books of the year 2004: Feet up, volume down|url=http://www.economist.com/node/3422856|accessdate=4 January 2013|newspaper=The Economist|date=25 November 2004}}</ref>). Copy it, then go back to the current version of the page (just select the "User page" tab at the top left) and put it into the article at the appropriate point. Good news!

I think I've found an ideal source for the Essinger article; a biography in the Gale Contemporary Authors series. There's a decent amount of useable info (covering his fluency in Finnish, his competition-level chess skills and his work in PR, as well as his writing) and most importantly, it's an independent source, with no discernable link to Essinger himself.

The downside is that it's only accessible via Highbeam Research, a subscription-only site, which means you won't be able to access it without paying. The upside is that I have a Highbeam account through Wikipedia (cheers, Wikipedia!) and so I can see and add the source to the article for you (a source can be valid for verification even if it's not easily accessible). If you're happy for me to do that, I'll add a few bits and pieces and put the Gale biography in as a reference - that's the GNG almost satisfied. Yunshui 雲‍水 14:37, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Hope you're feeling better today. I've added the Gale source, and put in a line about his chess-playing (plus a few other very minor tweaks). I'd say this is pretty much ready to go back into the article mainspace now, although there are a couple of things I'd suggest first:

• The Flirting Club is a fairly obscure film by an almost-equally-obscure director, and Essinger only had a minor role in it - I really don't think it's worth mentioning this, especially if the only source is the (generally regarded as unreliable) IMDb.
• The "Publications" section is currently empty - I'm not against including some selected works (not a complete bibliography!), but there's no point in having an empty section. If you do decide to add some of his publications back in, they should be in a chronological, bulleted list.
• The quotations from book reviews in the lead don't belong there (the lead is supposed to be a summary of the article). I would suggest adding a small amount of information about Jaquard's Web and Spellbound to the "Publications" section and citing the reviews there. There's no need to quote from them (Wallraf's opinions on spelling are largely irrelevent to an article about Essinger, and including praise from Mark's is a bit non-neutral - it's better to use reviews for information about the books, rather than opinions on them).

These are only suggestions - as I said, I think this could be moved back to mainspace as is. If you want to make the alterations above, feel free; if you don't, don't. As far as moving the page back is concerned, you can do this yourself if you wish; I'm happy to give you step-by-step instructions if you need them. Otherwise, let me know and I'll do it for you. Phew. Right, let me explain in a bit more detail.

One of the most important parts of Wikipedia's licensing is that all content must be correctly attributed to the user account or IP that added it. The problem with copying and pasting text is that it loses that attribution - if you copy the contents of the page User:Annelisa02/James Essinger and paste it into the page James Essinger, the latter page will show just one edit, as though you wrote the entire article in a single edit and then saved the page. This loses the attribution of content to the other editors for the page (looking at the page history, there are at least seven other editors besides you and me who have contributed to it).

The correct process is explained at this page, but I'll give you the step-by-step version here.

1. Go to User:Annelisa02/James Essinger. At the top of the page, next to the Search bar, you'll see a little down-arrow - clicking on it, you'll see the option "Move". Select it.
2. On the resulting page, change the drop-down menu next to the words "To new title" from "User" to "(Article)" (this tells the software which namespace to move the page to).
3. In the next box (the new title) replace "Annelisa02/James Essinger" with "James Essinger" - this is the new page title.
4. Click the "Move page" button.

Job done - the whole page will now be moved to James Essinger, and the page history will move with it, correctly preserving the attribution of all edits. Ta-daa! Yunshui 雲‍水 09:56, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

I had actually missed that you'd started work on the adoption page - good work so far! Sorry for my absence, Yunshui...it was unintentional. That life stuff that was mentioned before. I'd really like to continue with learning about being a Wiki contributed, but I hope you won't mind if it's at a fairly slow rate...some unexpected things came up that make it hard to spend too long at once on here. Whoops; my own apologies for not seeing this until today. I'd be more than happy to continue with the adoption - Wikipedia doesn't have deadlines (or does it?), so there's no rush; just take your time and do what you can/want to.
