Article check. edit

I said that I would take a quick look at your article before advising you what to do next with regards to submitting a review. However, I have to go to work. If you don't mind waiting, I will have a look through when I get back. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 13:35, 5 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks very much Skamecrazy123. Your offer's appreciated. No hurry :-) Annelisa02 (talk) 17:11, 5 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Article check, too edit

I took a quick look, and thought I'd give a couple of suggestions. First, for consistancy, try formatting the books using bullets, and using the "Cite » Book » ISBN" - autofill feature. For example:

Management & Consultancy

Writing Marketing Copy to Get Results (Smart Strategies) (1999) Cengage Learning EMEA; 2nd Revised edition edition (ISBN-13: 978-1861525192)
Starting a High-income Consultancy (Financial Times Series) (1994) Financial Times/ Prentice Hall (ISBN: 978-0273605065)
Breakthrough Consulting: So You Want to Be a Consultant? Turn Your Expertise into a Successful Consulting Business with Alex Dembitz (2000) Financial Times Prent.Int (ISBN: 9780273637073)

Becomes:

Management & Consultancy
  • Essinger, James (1999). Writing marketing copy to get results (2nd ed.). London: International Thomson Business. ISBN 978-1861525192.
  • Essinger, James (1994). Starting a high-income consultancy. Corby: Institute of Management Foundation. ISBN 978-0273605065.
  • Dembitz, Alex (2000). Breakthrough consulting : so you want to be a consultant? Turn your expertise into a successful consulting business. London: Financial Times Prentice Hall. ISBN 9780273637073. {{cite book}}: Unknown parameter |coauthors= ignored (|author= suggested) (help)

—Note: to use the Cite » book » ISBN autofill, (from the Edit toolbar) you simply put the ISBN into the field and press the associated icon/button; but you must manually remove the <ref> </ref> at the beginning and end of the citation. Also, there should be a space between paragraphs. ~Just a suggestion, ~Eric F 74.60.29.141 (talk) 17:00, 5 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

This is excellent advice, thanks Eric F! I have been wondering if there wasn't a neater way of doing this. I shall have a go next time I come online as I have to go out now. Thanks once again! Annelisa02 (talk) 17:13, 5 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Any more help needed? edit

Sorry I couldn't check the article earlier, but it looks like you're in safe hands. Is there anything else you need a hand with? --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 22:48, 5 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Skamecrazy123, thanks for your offer. Yes, I do have a problem I wouldn't mind a hand with, to do with licencing of an image I have. Just in case you're not around, I'll also post this to the Tearoom: I've been sent a photo of James ESsinger, for the page James Essinger and he says he is fine with it on Wiki and that it can be used by anyone. Trouble is, I've got totally bogged down in the upload licence rules - there's sooo many, I'm confused how to go about simply saying he's given permission. For instance, I've looked through the licence tags, and haven't a clue which one to use!! If you can guide me through this mire, I'd be very grateful. Thanks very much in advance, Annelisa02 (talk) 20:35, 6 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

My pleasure. Just two things I need to know before beginning. Have you had your query answered at the Teahouse and, if not, do you have the correspondence between you and Mr Essinger readily available? --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 22:41, 6 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks ever so much for your ongoing help!! I'm finding it harder than I thought to put the image on. As it turned out, my computer crashed yesterday, and I never got to the Teahouse, so I'm at the same point. I have the email from James Essinger, and also I sent him a standard form for creative commons licence, which he has said he's sent onto the email address provided at the top. I don't know how I would know when the licence has been made, but the photo I uploaded yesterday File:James Essinger 2011.jpg now seems to have disappeared :-S Maybe there was something I did wrong. I'm not sure if to try again already, or whether I need to wait for some sort of confirmation.
Also, I can't find out how to delet the photo I placed on already File:James Essinger.jpg, which James Essinger doesn't like. Is there a delete button on the page I couldn't see?Annelisa02 (talk) 16:26, 7 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
I will ask about that, as I am not sure when the licensing kicks in either, as well as whether you need to try again. As for picture deletion, if you have uploaded it to Wikipedia, then you will need to ask an admin to delete it for you. If you have uploaded it to Wikimedia Commons, then "here" is a page that will explain how to delete pictures there. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 22:39, 7 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I uploaded the first one to wikipedia, so I'll do as you say and see how to find an admin person to delete it. I still haven't heard anything back from the licence folk with a licence number or anything, which it asks for when uploading the pic, so I'll sit on it a while longer...they probably have a heck of a lot of photos and images to deal with. thanks again. --Annelisa02 (talk) 18:00, 9 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
This fellow would probably be able to help you or, if not, he should be able to point you in the direction of an admin who can perform the deletion you require. Let me know when you have the licensing number and, providing you still need assistance, we can continue :). --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 22:32, 9 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, Skamecrazy123, I really appreciate your input and your help! I shall get in touch with this fellow now, and will post here again if and when I receive some sort of confirmation of the licence. Best wishes --Annelisa02 (talk) 10:45, 10 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
My pleasure. If you need help or have a question, my talk page is always open :). --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 13:38, 10 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Adopt-a-user edit

Wikipedia can be a steep learning curve to start with. I wondered whether joining the Adopt-a-user program might make things easier for you? Adopt-a-user pairs new users with experienced editors to help them learn the ropes.

You can find a suitable mentor by asking anyone from the list of adopters (myself included), or you can place the code {{subst:dated adoptme}} anywhere on your user page. Yunshui  14:35, 11 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

James Essinger article, and adoption edit

Hi Annelisa. Per your message on my talkpage, I've moved the article into your userspace - it's new address is User:Annelisa02/James Essinger. You can of course notify the subject of the move, if you wish - since the end result will hopefully be a better article about him, I'm sure he won't object.

Also - welcome to the ranks of Wikipedia adoptees! I hope you enjoy learning more about Wikipedia through the program. I plan on operating a two-pronged approach to your adoption:

  • Since you're clearly interested in getting the James Essinger article up to scratch, you'll spend a lot of time working on that, learning about Wikipedia's content and sourcing requirements and how to meet them as you do so. I'll offer comments, suggestions and guidance, and point you at the guidelines and policies you'll need to know about. Once it's up and running, we can also look at writing articles for some of his books, too.
  • The main purpose for all Wikipedia editors is the creation, preservation and improvement of articles. Since the extended workings of Wikipedia directly impact on article creation, however, it's useful to have a solid overview of the project as a whole. To that end, I'd like you to work through my adoption school, at your own pace - let me know when you've completed a unit and I'll mark it for you. Most of the answers can be found at the linked policy pages, so click the blue links!

Adoption is an informal arrangement, and so you aren't obliged to follow my instructions or advice - there's no penalty if you don't complete an adoption school unit or ignore my suggestions. If during the adoption process, you feel that it isn't useful to you anymore, you're also free to abandon the adoption completely; just let me know. I hope, however, that you find it both interesting and edifying, and that you become a confident and competent Wikipedia editor as a result. If you have any suggestions on the adoption program - things you'd like to learn about that haven't been covered, ways the process could be improved, ideas for new adoption procedures - do please let me know.

I look forward to working with you over the next few months. Cheers, Yunshui  08:58, 15 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you so much for your time, help and guidance in advance, Yunshui! From your own userpage, I see you are rated highly by your admin peers, and this says a lot! You obviously have a lot of respect on here, and I very much look forward to working with, and learning from, you.
As I said on your userpage, I'm not well at the moment, so, though I'm going to take a look at your adoption school link, I'll probably wait until I'm feeling better before starting to work through it, but I'm looking forward to the experience :-) Thank you --Annelisa02 (talk) 11:31, 15 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
First task completed :-) (Enjoyed it too! As a second job, I copy-edit, so I'm afraid I couldn't resist meddling a little more than 3 edits in the American Indian Stories article :-S ) --Annelisa02 (talk) 09:34, 17 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

James Essinger article - an overview of the issues edit

Right, now you're all adopted, let's get cracking on this article. I'm going to give you a general overview of the issues that need to be resolved before we put it back into article space - by it's nature, this post will therefore appear somewhat critical, so my apologies in advance for that. What I'd like you to do is edit the page User:Annelisa02/James Essinger to try and resolve as many of these problems as possible - you can do this in your own time, in as many edits or editing sessions as you like; there's no deadline.

  • First and formost, as I said on my talkpage, the article doesn't provide sufficient evidence of notability. This is absolutely imperative, since non-notable articles are always deleted sooner or later. There are two sets of criteria that you can use to demonstrate notability.
  1. The General Notability Guideline (or GNG for short). The GNG is the baseline requirement for inclusion in Wikipedia; if a subject doesn't meet it, the article is unlikely to stay. The GNG requires significant coverage in multiple, reliable, independent sources. This page explains exactly what those terms mean on Wikipedia.
  2. The notability guideline for creative professionals is a supplement (not a replacement) to the GNG. There's a good case for Essinger meeting this; you've pretty much demonstrated that he meets #4, and he has a fighting chance of meeting #1 or #2. However, sources still need to be provided that demonstrate this.
  • The scope of an article about James Essinger should be James Essinger. Whilst it's obviously necessary to mention his publications as part of that, the current version of the page is almost entirely devoted to his work, not to the man himself. The scope of the article is therefore very skewed - most of the information about his books needs to be removed, and the information about him needs to be expanded. This may mean that you end up with a much shorter article (in fact, it almost certainly will), but the result will be much more in line with Wikipedia's requirements. Think of it as "streamlining", rather than "excising"...
  • There's a distinctly promotional tone to the article - the excessive quotes from (exclusively positive) book reviews give it the appearance of an advert, as do es the long list of publications. Removing most - probably all - of these, per the issue of scope mentioned above, will drastically improve the page.

In summary, I'd suggest you edit the article back to just a short opening paragraph, the biography section and a couple of lines about Jaquard's Web and Spellbound, plus appropriate references. You can then start looking for independent sources that support the remaining information, and meet the GNG requirements outlined above. Don't bin the bits you remove, though, especially the sources (yeah, I'm afraid a lot of them will have to go too) - instead, create a new user subpage called something like User:Annelisa02/James Essinger sources, so that they're ready to hand when you, I or someone else comes to write articles about his books. Yunshui  09:27, 15 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'll start work on this as soon as I can. I assure you, I don't mind constructive critisism...how can one learn when one doesn't know where one's gone wrong! I see you have given me some excellent advice here, and have two questions stemming from this:
  • the first feels a little silly, but how do I 'create' a page called User:Annelisa02/James Essinger sources? (I think this is why I went straight into putting the page up, because I was a bit confused about this :-S )
  • Originally, you suggested writing a page on each of the books, rather than on James Essinger. Would it be easier to start with these? or is a better lesson learnt by going back to the original page and simply learning how to do it properly? And, what if I can't find any other sources that confirm life-details about Mr Essinger? (I think I must have included most references I found, in my enthusiastic attempt to be well sourced/ referenced lol) I have to concede there might actually not be enough on Mr Essinger to warrant a page, as you said previously... --Annelisa02 (talk) 11:43, 15 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Scrub the first question...I think I just worked that out, following your link to the suggested page and seeing what it said there. thanks --Annelisa02 (talk) 11:51, 15 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yep, if you just follow the link and save some text on that page, it will be created (and the red link will turn blue). Whether you create pages on the books first is totally up to you - you'll learn different things from both. Arguably, it's easier to write about books than about people (the guidelines on biographies of living people (BLPs) are quite strict), but if you can write a BLP, other articles will be comparatively straightforward... If you want to try writing article on the books in a userspace page, you can use User:Annelisa02/Jaquard's Web and User:Annelisa02/Spellbound. Yunshui  11:59, 15 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Mining page histories edit

Here's a handy trick. Your recent edit to the Essinger draft removed the original source for The Ecomomist , which is still used in the article as a source (using the <refname=> tag). You need to replace <ref name=Economist /> with the original reference - but how to find it?

Go to the "View history" tab at the top right of your screen. This will show you all the previous revisions of the page. Click on the "prev" link in the (cur | prev) entry next to your most recent edit. You'll see a record of all the changes you made to the page - including the Economist reference, in its pre-deleted state (for the record, it's this: <ref name=Economist>{{cite news|title=Books of the year 2004: Feet up, volume down|url=http://www.economist.com/node/3422856|accessdate=4 January 2013|newspaper=The Economist|date=25 November 2004}}</ref>). Copy it, then go back to the current version of the page (just select the "User page" tab at the top left) and put it into the article at the appropriate point. Yunshui  13:35, 15 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Lol, I couldn't keep away...Lying in bed being ill, and I'm playing with Wiki!! This is very handy, Yunshui, since I divided the original material to include sub-pages:
and each of those pages had broken references on them. I'm going to save them as they are for now, but will come back and sort them out later. Thanks fro this --Annelisa02 (talk) 15:00, 15 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Good news! edit

I think I've found an ideal source for the Essinger article; a biography in the Gale Contemporary Authors series. There's a decent amount of useable info (covering his fluency in Finnish, his competition-level chess skills and his work in PR, as well as his writing) and most importantly, it's an independent source, with no discernable link to Essinger himself.

The downside is that it's only accessible via Highbeam Research, a subscription-only site, which means you won't be able to access it without paying. The upside is that I have a Highbeam account through Wikipedia (cheers, Wikipedia!) and so I can see and add the source to the article for you (a source can be valid for verification even if it's not easily accessible). If you're happy for me to do that, I'll add a few bits and pieces and put the Gale biography in as a reference - that's the GNG almost satisfied. Yunshui  14:37, 15 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wow, that is so cool! You are amazing! :-) I was getting frustrated with all the book reviews! I guess there's no way I can see it all? Nevertheless, I'm impressed you found this...it didn't come up in my search. Thank you so much! and, yes, of course I'd be happy for you to add the source - I'd be delighted, in fact!)--Annelisa02 (talk) 15:04, 15 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hope you're feeling better today. I've added the Gale source, and put in a line about his chess-playing (plus a few other very minor tweaks). I'd say this is pretty much ready to go back into the article mainspace now, although there are a couple of things I'd suggest first:
  • The Flirting Club is a fairly obscure film by an almost-equally-obscure director, and Essinger only had a minor role in it - I really don't think it's worth mentioning this, especially if the only source is the (generally regarded as unreliable) IMDb.
  • The "Publications" section is currently empty - I'm not against including some selected works (not a complete bibliography!), but there's no point in having an empty section. If you do decide to add some of his publications back in, they should be in a chronological, bulleted list.
  • The quotations from book reviews in the lead don't belong there (the lead is supposed to be a summary of the article). I would suggest adding a small amount of information about Jaquard's Web and Spellbound to the "Publications" section and citing the reviews there. There's no need to quote from them (Wallraf's opinions on spelling are largely irrelevent to an article about Essinger, and including praise from Mark's is a bit non-neutral - it's better to use reviews for information about the books, rather than opinions on them).
These are only suggestions - as I said, I think this could be moved back to mainspace as is. If you want to make the alterations above, feel free; if you don't, don't. As far as moving the page back is concerned, you can do this yourself if you wish; I'm happy to give you step-by-step instructions if you need them. Otherwise, let me know and I'll do it for you. Yunshui  08:46, 16 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, Yunshui. I'm going to do as you say, and remove the imbd link, add a few words about Jacquard's Web and Spellbound, and pick a few of the more popular previous publications. Am I right in thinking I would simply go back to the original page James Essinger and paste what is in the User:Annelisa02/James Essinger directly in, but without the 'work in progress' banner at the top of the page? Would I have to mark the page in any other way to indicate what has been done? Cheers --Annelisa02 (talk) 09:41, 17 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Aah! No! Don't do that! (longer response to follow in a moment)... Yunshui  09:44, 17 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Lol Don't panic...I wasn't ready to do that anyway. That's why I was asking, because I thought it was probably not as simple as that :-D --Annelisa02 (talk) 09:52, 17 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Phew. Right, let me explain in a bit more detail.
One of the most important parts of Wikipedia's licensing is that all content must be correctly attributed to the user account or IP that added it. The problem with copying and pasting text is that it loses that attribution - if you copy the contents of the page User:Annelisa02/James Essinger and paste it into the page James Essinger, the latter page will show just one edit, as though you wrote the entire article in a single edit and then saved the page. This loses the attribution of content to the other editors for the page (looking at the page history, there are at least seven other editors besides you and me who have contributed to it).
The correct process is explained at this page, but I'll give you the step-by-step version here.
  1. Go to User:Annelisa02/James Essinger. At the top of the page, next to the Search bar, you'll see a little down-arrow - clicking on it, you'll see the option "Move". Select it.
  2. On the resulting page, change the drop-down menu next to the words "To new title" from "User" to "(Article)" (this tells the software which namespace to move the page to).
  3. In the next box (the new title) replace "Annelisa02/James Essinger" with "James Essinger" - this is the new page title.
  4. Click the "Move page" button.
Job done - the whole page will now be moved to James Essinger, and the page history will move with it, correctly preserving the attribution of all edits. Ta-daa! Yunshui  09:56, 17 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
(Oh, and you should also, as you guessed, remove the {{userdraft}} template from the top of the page after the move; it generates a massive red error message in the article namespace...) Yunshui  10:01, 17 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I won't copy and paste, lol. I'll just finish the publications, then I'll follow your instructions here. Thanks! --Annelisa02 (talk) 12:08, 17 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Move looks to have worked; nicely done. Yunshui  12:35, 17 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Article now live. I should've asked you before I moved it, but could you just please check I didn't write too much in the publications section? I removed the quotes and put in a short description of spellbound and Jacquard's web, then picked out a few titles amazon has as the most popular...I hope it's ok! Now, despite not being well still (have been ill for nearly a month now...this has been a great distraction! :-) ) I have to go out, so, if you feel any of the stuff in the publications section needs changing, please feel free to do so! Thanks again, Yunshui...it has been very satisfying contributing my first article. --Annelisa02 (talk) 12:42, 17 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
I've moved the Publications section around slightly (to keep it chronological, which is preferred) and made a few very minor tweaks, but other than that I see nothing that requires immediate attention. Well done on your first article; I'm glad you've enjoyed the process! You don't need to stop here, of course; if you'd like to carry on creating then we definitely need an article on Jacquard's Web...
Oh, and as a purely personal aside; based on this article and the reviews I've read, I've now ordered myself a copy of Spellbound; looks like an interesting read. Yunshui  12:54, 17 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Let me know what you think of Spellbound? My daughter loved reading it and kept quoting out of it when we got our copy! :-) I'm reading it next...
Also, yes, I'd like to do a page on Jacquard's Web next. I'll start that soon.
On another note, I don't know if you saw I'd written on the 'adoption' section above? Going to do section 3 now.
Oh yes, and thanks for the IP address thing. I had been logged in, but I guess I got logged out by the server disconnecting or something, so my name was still at the top of the page at the time I saved! I'll watch out for that. --Annelisa02 (talk) 17:44, 17 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Adoption edit

I had actually missed that you'd started work on the adoption page - good work so far! I've marked the first three sections as completed - to be honest, you'd have passed the bar on them automatically thanks to your work on James Essinger, but Wikipedia benefits from the improvements that you've made elsewhere as well. I'm especially pleased you added references to the Berg (state) article; a subject of such historical interest really did need some sources. Keep it up, and thank you for making Wikipedia better. Yunshui  23:25, 18 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

I enjoyed doing those tasks, Yunshui. I may do a bit more of the same before moving onto the deletion section (which I've actually started reading, but there's just so much to take in there!) I would also like to get on and try those two book pages as well...Life's getting in the way at the moment, so hopefully come back to this within the next few days! Cheers --Annelisa02 (talk) 19:17, 23 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I know the feeling - real life has this annoying habit of intruding into one's wiki-time... Yunshui  09:29, 25 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for my absence, Yunshui...it was unintentional. That life stuff that was mentioned before. I'd really like to continue with learning about being a Wiki contributed, but I hope you won't mind if it's at a fairly slow rate...some unexpected things came up that make it hard to spend too long at once on here. If it's ok with you, I'dm like to continue...? Annelisa02 (talk) 12:19, 2 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Whoops; my own apologies for not seeing this until today. I'd be more than happy to continue with the adoption - Wikipedia doesn't have deadlines (or does it?), so there's no rush; just take your time and do what you can/want to. I'll try and keep an eye on what you're doing, but ping me on my talkpage if you want to get my attention. All the best, Yunshui  10:23, 7 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Adoption edit

Hi Annelisa. Since you've been inactive on Wikipedia for over three months now, I've closed our formal adoption arrangement - no reflection on you, it's simply that adoption is designed for fairly active users, and so I don't think it's necessarily of much use to you. You're still more than welcome to come to me with any questions you have about Wikipedia, or ask me for help whenever you need it. Happy editing! Yunshui  07:15, 19 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

December 2017 edit

Hello, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. This is just a note to let you know that I've moved the draft that you were working on to Draft:Jaquard's Web, from its old location at User:Annelisa02/Jaquard's Web. This has been done because the Draft namespace is the preferred location for Articles for Creation submissions. Please feel free to continue to work on it there. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to ask me on my talk page. Thank you. North America1000 00:29, 14 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
