Hit Scene 'plagiarism'

Did anyone who approve the draft bother to check that it is in fact lifted verbatim from Citizendium? Check the creation histories of both articles: Citizendium versus Wikipedia. This is pretty disgusting behaviour but made worse that none of the admins noticed the original source.Under the WP license you're meant to indicate the source. 86.109.100.80 (talk) 16:11, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

Dear 86.109.100.80: I did, in fact check for plagiarism when I declined the original draft. However, the Citizendium unapproved article appears to prevent indexing by Google or Yahoo, so I didn't find the problem. I didn't check Citizendium specifically because I'd never heard of it. Sorry that you find this accidental oversight disgusting, but without using search engines it's nearly impossible to find duplicated text on the net.

As for the other admins, please note that there are more than five million articles and about 1,400 admins; we depend on readers and our regular editors to report problems. Thanks for bringing this one to my attention so that we could add the attribution; please contact me again if you find any more such issues.—Anne Delong (talk) 18:14, 30 July 2016 (UTC)

B. Alan Wallace

Hello,

as far as I can see, the sentence "Wallace cites as evidence for this hypothesis references to quantum mechanics and paranormal phenomena such as clairvoyance and extrasensory perception." is not currently supported by the sources cited. I proposed another version (which is supported at least by Wallace's own words and the Novella blog post) here, but it was reverted. Chilton (talk) 21:43, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

Or I guess this fragment could be thrown out altogether. Chilton (talk) 22:13, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

I presume that you saw the sources I added in which he is quoted discussing the connection between certain levels of consciousness and paranormal phenomenon. Perhaps your version was reverted because you didn't support it with references. I am not so much concerned with the exact wording of the claims, so much as making sure that any ideas are attributed to him and not to Wikipedia. At any rate, there is a lot of related discussion on the article's talk page; you are more likely to develop a consensus by posting your suggestions there.—Anne Delong (talk) 02:57, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

"I am not so much concerned with the exact wording of the claims" - it's not just a matter of wording, it's a completely different claim! I wanted to call your attention to this, as you introduced different sources which don't seem to support this statement at all. Chilton (talk) 10:31, 9 August 2016 (UTC)
Chilton, the text of the article says Wallace's belief in "another dimension of consciousness" is "opposite to the view taken by neuroscientists who see consciousness as the product of brain functioning", and in the sources Wallace criticizes those who refuse to see consciousness as "anything other than a property of matter". In the article it says that Wallace cites paranormal phenomenon as evidence for his view of consciousness, and in the sources he talks about how scientists dismiss the idea that the "primordial consciousness", which he says leads to "clairvoyance, clairaudience, telekinesis, and lucid dreaming", exists because to study it they would have to "put aside their dogmatic materialism", which (apparently) can't explain these things. I believe that these sources are appropriate. However, I don't claim to be an expert in this area. If you change the text to something that you believe more accurately reflects what's said in the sources, I will not revert your changes; however, please don't remove the sources (they are definitely relevant to his "view of consciousness") or add unsourced opinion. I can't speak for the other editors interested in this page, though.—Anne Delong (talk) 19:47, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

Question on article

Hi, I noticed that you put Debbie Tisinger-Moore on the List of racquetball players. I'm surprised there's a page for Tisinger-Moore, as she's never been a top pro player - no top 10 appearances (see Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour), and I don't think she's been a US national team member. There are references on Tisinger-Moore's article, but I'm not sure whether she's qualifies for notability. Any thoughts on this? --Trb333 (talk) 23:47, 28 August 2016 (UTC)

Hello, Trb333. I found the article in draft space, but I don't know anything about racquetball, so I couldn't tell if the tournaments were important or not. There is no WikiProject for racquetball, so I tried asking at WP Tennis, thinking there might be someone there who also knew about racquetball, but received no answer. I found plenty of news reports about her, she's in the US Hall of Fame, etc., so I decided that she would pass general notability, and moved the draft to mainspace. It seems that you know more about this than I do, so if you think there should not be an article about her, I suggest you put the article through WP:AFD.
About the list: It is titled "List of racquetball players", and she is one. The word "top" is vague. If the list is intended to include only players who have appeared on a particular top ten list, or have been on a national team, then the list should be renamed to indicate this.

By the way, if you are knowledgeable about racquetball, maybe you could look over this article: Dane Elkins. It has a lot of references which don't seem to me to be independent, published sources, but maybe you will know better.—Anne Delong (talk) 02:20, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. In looking over the Wikipedia:Notability for tennis criteria, I think Tisinger-Moore could qualify for notability based on her USA Racquetball Hall of Fame induction. Without checking, I believe her titles are all age category titles, rather than open titles, although maybe she did have a doubles title back in the day. But then that would have qualified her for Team USA, and I'm pretty sure she's was never a player on Team USA at an international event, although as mentioned in the article, she was a coach for Team USA at this year's World Championships (her first appearance as a coach at that level).
I am going to include a criteria list on that List of racquetball players page, which I'll base on the tennis criteria. I don't think Dane Elkins would qualify for that. That's an article that has annoyed me for some time, as he's a junior, and isn't even that old now, let alone when that page was first created (definitely a candidate for WP:AFD. The tennis criteria for junior player notability is winning a Junior Grand Slam. Racquetball has annual World Junior Championships, not Grand Slams, but with that, I'd say only the U18 Boy's and Girl's Champions are notable, and even then I'm not sure, because there are so many adult players without articles who are notable than any junior player. --Trb333 (talk) 17:53, 30 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, Trb333. If you want to take that page to AfD, that's fine with me. I don't know enough about sports criteria to do it myself. One consideration is that if he will soon be competing as an adult, it may be a waste of time, because the article would soon be recreated.—Anne Delong (talk) 18:12, 30 August 2016 (UTC)

New season of Wikipedia Wednesdays

Anne, hope you had a good summer. I wanted to let you know about our upcoming editing event at AGO (Wikipedia:Meetup/Toronto/LGBTQ+_Artists_(September_21,_2016)) -- we'd love to see you there. Next event should be in January, date TBC. Artchivist1 (talk) 14:45, 7 September 2016 (UTC)

Artchivist1. Sorry, I won't be able to attend this time; I will be having an operation that week, and should stay close to home for a few days during recovery. Last time it didn't seem as though you needed me; I just sat there editing most of the time, which I could have done at home. I'd be glad to come in January if you have a specific role for me. Good luck with your event.—Anne Delong (talk) 15:38, 7 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks Anne Delong, and best wishes for a speedy recovery. I understand about your wishes for a specific role and will keep that in mind for future events. We've been very grateful for your moral support and I guess it's a good thing that our editing skills are developing enough to be able to handle most situations! Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Anne Delong. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:47, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
