Claude-Paul Taffanel

While fleshing out the article on the Tchaikovsky Cello Concerto, I noticed there wasn't an article listed for flautist Claude-Paul Taffanel. Today I found another Wiki article for this artist under the entry Paul Taffanel. This article is not as substantial as mine but has some information not included in mine. Atonement

Dear Andy, Thanks for correcting my date error on the Atonement (film) page. You may find of interest the list of winners of the Evening Standard British Film Awards for 2007.

As it happens, editor Melly had deleted the list, on the grounds that it was introducing new material not previously covered by the page! But I have restored the list (and its links to the many associated pages), since the absence of this essentially encyclopedic data would be a disservice to film researchers.

It is also my present intention to add to it on a year-by-year basis, in order to build a more complete picture of these important British Film awards. Would that we could now add retrospective information about the awards, but alas the information for previous years is not readily to hand. Miyokan, NPOV and Tchaikovsky

There seems to be what is becoming an ongoing tug-of-war with Moyokan] about what is or is not NPOV with Tchaikovsky. Could you please look over the revision history for the last few days and suggest how to proceed? Thanks for the reassurance. This started when Miyokan used phrased like "sturring melodies" etc. in a rewrite of the intro paragraph—things which became an instant red flag in the peer review. I reversed that edit, then he came bak ith what you saw, so I was concerned. You're probably right, though; I'll leave the matter at that.

I've noticed the difference in tone and detail as well. The difference in tone does not seem a fatal problem. Maybe some would prefer something drier or more overtly formal; others might not mind somehting a little less formal if the article is more readable or accessible as a result. The detail surorised me. At the same time, it answers many questions I (and other potential readers?) have had about why there was such a conflict with Tchaikovsky wrote in a more "Western" style and why he had a problem with it. Now I wish there were a little more detail with articles on Rimsky-Korsakov, Mussorgsky, and so on. The only comparable one I've seen so fr has been Stravinsky. Actually, I'm a litle confused about something more elementary, though some of the discussions with others on Tchaikovsky did bring it up. How often are we really supposed to footnote and cite sources, even on general facts. I've seen some aritles with practically no citatios, others which cite practically every line. Mahler's Second Symphony

Hi, Andy W. Thanks for the kind words on my work on Mahler's Second Symphony. It looks as though the work is on several other persons' watch lists, as well as yours. I think, though, that I will leave further editing on this article to you and yours, as our views seem to conflict. To me, there is way too much musical technicalese, especially in describing the final movement, for the casual reder or musical listener. (Why, for instance, should I care about "rehearsal 3" in the first movement? I'm not a conductor or orchestral player. Most won't know what that term means.) However, all this information and more is back—in fact, nearly everything removed. Yes, I know Wiki editing is a collaborative process, but there is a very strong message which has been sent and goes beyond that process, and I am taking heed to follow it. Advice from an expert Mahlerian

on two points on which I'm honestly unsure:

1. The Oxford Companion to Music lists the Mahler 4th as a choral symphony, with the caveat there is a soprano instead of a choir. While I can agree with an explanation and yes, it's in overall layout a Beethoven Ninth for reduced forces, doesn't the term choral symphony mean thre is a choir somewhere in the composition?
2. Oxford also lists Shostakovich's 14th as a choral symphony but not Das Lied von der Erde. They both follow the same loose general idea of a symphony as intended by their composers; the only diffference is the numbering complicatio with Mahler, since he did write a Ninth Symphony after Das Lied. If Das Lied were an actual (ninth) symphony, why not complete the job by making the next symphony the 10th. I know this is covered some in "Curse of the Ninth" but I'm still confused.

Bagatelle sans tonalité

Hi there! Been a while. I wrote something about the Liszt Bagatelle sans tonalité in the article for the Mephisto Waltzes since it was intended originally as part of that group. Should I remove that copy to the Bagatellea article (which is basically a stub at this point) or merge the Bagatelle article into the Mephisto Waltzes article? Late works (Liszt)

Thanks for the advice on Bagatelle sans tonalité. There is a larger article on the Liszt late works, which I spun off the main Liszt article quite some time back due to length and about which I am currently wondering whether to continuew working or request for deletion. This article is going to take a lot of time and energy to pull together since it is frankly a mess. Aubrey-Maturin series

Andy, thanks for going back in and reverting to my earlier version in the Aubrey-Maturin series, saying it might be legitimate. I had mistakenly clicked "save" before describing the edit which you visited and undid It was an addition to the Bawdy Humour section where an author referred to O'Brian's frequent reference to "boobies" in connection with Stephen Maturin. I added notes from the Fortune of War to that paragraph. (Later I returned for a minor correction and began describing the earlier edit, but I mistakenly typed some key which saved the typing at that incomplete point. Not my day. Thanks for the encouragement. The text of the article was finished before the assessment was made. The only thing I could figure was that perhaps the article was not as encyclopedic in tone as the assessor would have preferred. Well thanks for asking. I guess to upgrade to a B article I would expect a more detailed discussion on a few other major choral symphonies like the Faust Symphony(1854) and Dante Symphony (1856) by Franz Liszt, Gustav Holst's First Choral Symphony (1923–4), and Benjamin Britten's Spring Symphony. The sections on Shostakovich's Second, Third, and 13th symphonies could be expanded as could Vaughan Williams's A Sea Symphony. Obviously we wouldn't want these sections to become too detailed as they all deserve their own articles. However, their relevence within this topic is enough that an overview would be appropriate. Bergen County Academies move

I did not know that on your ID cards it says Hackensack Campus. Alought I am willing to change the title again from Bergen County Technical High School - Bergen Academies to Bergen County Technical High Schools - "Hackensack Campus" on the quotations I beleave that i should also add Academies in the Title. The reason I did Bergen Academies is that on the school website its Bergen Academies; that is why I add Bergen Academies to the title instead of Hackensack Campus. At the i will put the title as "Bergen County Technical High Schools - Hackensack Campus" somewhere i would like to add Bergen Academies or Academies with out using and any parentheses. please respond back to me asap.

Choral symphony

Thanks for putting up with me over the Tchaikovsky business, which is now resolved.

I've been doing some work on the latter part of choral symphony, adding some worthwhile but possibly losing the focus of the article in the process. The area where I've been working begins at the heading "Programmatic versus symphonic." Maybe that whole part of the article could go. It would be throwing away a lot of work but maybe "less would be more," as the saying goes, and clarify issues in the article.

Could you recommend a good copyeditor?

Choral symphony just passed GA review but the reviewer, hamiltonstone, recommended a good copyediting. I contacted Brianboulton, who did a great job on Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky but haven't hard anything back and suspect he may be too busy. Just in case this is so, is there someone else you could recommend? I've done everything I can at the moment with the article but it needs a lot of work. Thanks! Too much Schnittke?

I've revamped the choral symphony article per peer review, adding more contemporary works. I'm wondering, though, whether there is too much about the Schnittke Fourth Symphony in the Programmatic intent section. Hi Jonyungk, I like your Programmatic intent section. Are you referring to the Schnittke Second Symphony and Fourth Symphony? The information on both seemed a bit tied. Try to distinguish between the symphonies a bit more. Anyway, I feel that there is enough information to start an article on the symphony in question. Otherwise, I feel it is fine in the article. I did get a feel that it is a modern choral symphony that deserves a bit more discussion, and if you intended that importance, it is fine as it is. — Andy W. ^{(talk/contrb.)} 18:46, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Symphony No. 8 (Mahler)

Hi, Andy. In the past you have been quite active in editing the Mahler Eighth article - did you create it? You haven't been involved with it for a while, but I thought I'd let you know that, in view of the approaching centenary of the work's first performance (12 September) I'm proposing to develop the article, hopefully to featured standard. Work won't begin for a while (I'm embroiled in the Mahler biography at the moment) but you may be interested in developments on your former project, when these begin. Hi, Brianboulton! No, I'm not the creator of the article. User:Camembert created the article on March 1, 2003. And yes, I had been a collaborator working on the article for a while, but I have since been less active. I am very excited that you are interested in getting it up to featured, but I honestly don't have much material on the symphony to work with... just a score and several recordings. It's one of my favorite symphonies. The article is on my watchlist, and I'll be glad to contribute whatever I can when the time comes. Thanks for your reply. I'm going to put the Mahler biog up for FAC this week; once that it settled one way or the other, I'll be able to devote my time to the Eighth. I have quite a bit of material, including de La Grange's detailed analysis, Cooke, Mitchell etc. De La Grange is also very good on background details. I have two recordings - Bernstein's ancient 1966 version, and Abbado's from 1994 - is there a more up-to-date one that you would recommend? Hi Brian, sorry no I do not know whose translation is included in the article. The text was added at separate times: the text for Part I was added by Special:Contributions/24.24.250.38 on May 26, 2007 with no citation. Text for Part II was added by Special:Contributions/Colinckw on January 27, 2008. The text has been frequently edited/modified by users and IP addresses. There is probably no single source that the text comes from. Try looking on wikiquote.org and wikisource.org (although I don't think I found anything). — Andy W. ^{(talk/contrb.)} 21:06, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

I have a issue with possible copyright infringement - it will be very hard, not to mention time-consuming, to demonstrate the right to include these texts in full. However, my main concern is about whether it is necessary to have this text. The article is going to expand considerably over the next couple of weeks, and the text represents a massive amount of kb which could be better employed. The text is almost opera libretto length, and I don't know of any opera article that includes the libretto plus English translation. Is anyone likely to read through it? I think that, rather than include a text of dodgy provenance and possible copyright complications, appropriate quotations from one of the standard translations should be used. (PS) You say, above, you have a recording of the Eighth by Zubin Mehta. I can't find out anything about this recording - a complete google blank, in fact. WikiProject Cornell University

Welcome! Good to see some new blood- most of the active editors in the project don't actually live in Ithaca anymore, so we can be a bit constrained in what we do. If you're looking to make any photographic contributions, one thing I can think of off the top of my head is Bailey Plaza. I understand the plaza looks substantially different now compared to how it looked in Spring 2009. Also, there are a few new buildings on campus (like whatever that one is sandwiched between Rockefeller and Baker on the hill above the Arts Quad...) that we lack photography of. I understand you've made a lot of contributions in the area of music-related articles; some Cornell articles in that genre (like Cornell University Glee Club) are in pretty good shape, but others (like Cornell University Chorus) need extreme overhauls, and there's always room for more. You might be interested in expanding Bailey Hall (Ithaca, New York) to talk about some of the more famous premiers and concerts that that venue has seen over its long history. Harry Altman and Bergen County Academies

There is no issue with why Harry Altman would be notable, based on his participation in the film Spellbound. The question is establishing Altman's attendance at Bergen County Academies with a reliable and verifiable source as none has been provided, nor have I been able to find one in a Google / News / Archive search. As such, I have reinserted the "citation needed" tag until an appropriate sources that establishes the connection to the school (not his individual notability) can be provided.
