User talk:Andrewa/sandbox

G'day

This talk page was created without my approval (at the same time that a comment was added to my sandbox, also without any prior discussion). My first reaction was that it was best deleted, but on deeper reflection that's probably not the right thing at all.

I saw no need for such a page, but obviously I've been proved wrong on that. So my deeper reflection is, feel free to add comments, preferably signed and dated, as to a normal talk page. I'd suggest that most comments would be better in my normal talk page, as I don't get notified of these. But it's your call.

I do make the point that my personal sandbox is intended for my experiments. I still don't see any justification for anyone else modifying it, or even monitoring what I do there.

But it's not secret, if it was I'd use my own personal Wiki (which also exists) instead, nor is it critical that it shouldn't be updated, if it was I'd protect the page (as at least one other sysop did to some of their user subpages at one stage, I haven't checked whether these are still protected ot not). So if it helps to build the encyclopedia, you're welcome to watch what happens in the sandbox and even to join in. I'm just a little bit mystified as to how it possibly could.

And I'd still suggest that it's courtesy to talk to me before modifying it, and even to accept my judgement as to what is helpful here. There is nothing to prevent you from creating your own user sandbox, and copying the whole contents from here if you want to play with them, and I don't expect I will notice nor care.

I made the comment in an edit summary for the sandbox that I was going to mark all my edits there as minor. This has also been challenged, but I'm not convinced and will continue for the moment. The logic was that anyone looking for my personal contributions doesn't want to see these edits, any more than they want to see the spelling mistakes and typos that I fix. If they are monitoring all of my activities for any reason, then it's easy to look at the minor edits as well and they should. (This isn't necessarily hostile of them either, for example I can and do get spelling wrong from time to time, see user talk:andrewa/archive1#Desiccation.)

I guess any comments about that last policy belong here, but consider leaving me a note on my main talk page too, where I'm a lot more likely to see it. Andrewa 21:32, 19 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Oh, brilliant. That means there's nowhere at all I can experiment with this, does it? If there is it's pretty well hidden. Andrewa (talk) 20:33, 7 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Heh heh. Some things I guess you just have to test on real live page. Pick an obscure one where nobody is likely to notice your test, then after done testing, quickly revert the test so that nobody accuses you of vandalism. I surrounded the error in nowiki tags to prevent false-positive transclusion of an error. Wbm1058 (talk) 16:39, 25 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Good point about the nowiki tags, and thanks for the feedback! Andrewa (talk) 09:42, 27 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
