Argh

Sorry to bother you at home, as it were, but while I was asking another how-to-merge question at the help desk, someone posted and made the page too big, so I was told I'd have to merge my post with something else. Ha. Ha. I don't know how to merge! That was my question! I managed to get "Heath toffee" redirected and renamed "Heath bar", but "Heath (candy bar)" refuses to join "Heath bar" by moving, so obviously I've missed a crucial part of the move/merge operation. Grand Reopening

I am completely cross-eyed from googling, but the new Heath bar page is up, and since you made it possible (no good deed goes unpunished!), I am wondering if you'd take a look at it, and spot any egregious errors. That is interesting. I wrote the article on a word processing program (because I'm always losing stuff when I write here) and copied and pasted it. So the apostrophe probably did mess it up. James Oberg

Aloha. I noticed that you recently moved James Oberg to Jim Oberg. While I'm sure you meant well, I don't believe this move is correct. According to the relevant Wikipedia:Naming conventions, we should use the most common name of a person or thing that does not conflict with the names of other people or things. According to a Google test, the most common name is "James Oberg" (31,800 hits), while "Jim Oberg" only gets 580 hits. See also: Wikipedia:Naming conventions (common names). Not a problem. My take on it, is if there are two Jim Oberg's, we could disambiguate in a number of ways, such as using middle initials, or using parenthesis describing their profession in neutral terms. The only time I've ever run into a problem is on the Emperor Norton article. Yes Image Seventeen.jpg is the one I'm referring to. It's a good photo of Siegfried. Looks professional.

Having done some more digging, this (http://www.leeds.ac.uk/library/rights/photos.htm) suggests that under UK law it's probably public domain. This (http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/195_copr.html) suggests ditto for American law; it was made before 1923. (I've changed the copyright tag on the image to reflect that)

If that's the case I can probably post the photo of Siegfried in his fifties. If you look at the history of the the Siegfried Sassoon article you'll see where I had a new photo placed and then reverted the page. You opinion of the new photo would be welcome. Goodbye Shimray. I'm just not cut out for Wikipedia. I have a deep distrust of men because of their love of power and their brutality. Each entry I added on here was met with suspicion and cold heartedness. I just can't handle that much, I know of no other way of saying this, hostility. Genuine curosity, at least mine, had no place on Wikipedia. People prefer to be comfortable with what they have thought and concluded. I do not make others, unlike myself, comfortable. These coins were introduced in 1987 with face values of £100, £50, £25, and £10.

They would have almost certainly been authorised by royal proclamation and I can say with 100% certainty that they are legal tender at their respective face values to any amount. That being said, I certainly would not exchange them at their face values! Whitaker's Almanac would be able to confirm most of this and probably provide a more authorative reference.

Nope, it crashed on me as well. I don't know if you're an admin or not, but administrators have a button called "rollback". It's a useful tool, and it lets people rollback edits to the last good version (even if the vandal did multiple vandal edits instead of just one). I tried looking at the page first, but the browser went plop. I also noticed on the vandal fighter program (CDVF) that the edit that the vandal made was gigantic. Aologies for the delay in replying but my computer has been playing up so I've not been around for a few days. Happily, the Spitfire on Planform is part of the BoBMF, it was built in 1941 at Castle Bromwich, is in desert camouflage and is a Mark Vb, serial AB910. I'm not quite sure either, except to say that the said content on the Geology of the Moon page is a duplicate of what appears on the Tektite page, so there's a lot of reduncancy that should probably be primarily located on the Tektite page. I'm certainly not a geology expert, but I'd have to say that the results are interesting but probably preliminary. The surface of the Earth and the Moon are similar enough in composition that parallel processes could be at work. So I guess, like you, I'm a little skeptical about the motivation. removal of ASINs

Why are you systematically removing all ASINs? Please stop. ASIN numbers are generally only used when a book is too old to have an ISBN number. ASIN numbers are perfectly valid for use in this case. Kaldari 00:11, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

I'm afraid I disagree with you strongly. In the case of a book having no ISBN number, an ASIN can be useful, especially if the book has a name similar to other books. Regardless, unilaterally deleting content across hundreds of articles is not something to be undertaken lightly. Unless you want to piss off several hundred editors, I would suggest you propose a policy before undertaking such an initiative. In the meantime, I would like to ask that you revert your ASIN edits. I'm very familiar with what an ASIN is, as are most people who do research professionally. Yes, ASIN numbers are owned and created by Amazon, but they are often used in other contexts for lack of an alternative. Thanks ever so much for being reasonable. I think this is definitely an issue that could use some broader discussion. I apologize once again for biting your head off. I'm certainly willing to entertain the idea of removing ASINs from Wikipedia, but personally, I consider them useful, and I imagine others do as well or else they wouldn't have been added in the first place. That said, I am certainly open to other points of view. Also, I think it might serve your cause to create some alternative citation templates that do not require book identification numbers. Error on legend page?

Hi! Thanks for the welcome to wikipedia. I was looking through the links you added to my talk page. I had a question on one of the pages linked to through one of them. In the Edit Summary Legend page the section on capitalization says:

caps is for those instances when every letter of a word is capitalized, when the word is to be made ALL CAPS. lc and lcase mean lowercasing the first letter of some word, and uc and ucase mean uppercasing the first letter of some word."

The examples it gives though, look like:

ucase: Bill clinton

lcase: BILL CLINTON

The formatting of the lines seems odd with one being italicized and the other not, but mainly what I was wondering about was the lcase being used for the all caps. That seems to contradict the definition above it. Am I missing something or which one is right? Thanks for the help.

NASA Photos

I notice you've been adding a lot of NASA photographs to early spaceflight pages. I just wondered if you were aware of the NASA Image Exchange at nix.larc.nasa.gov? It's an attempt at a "union catalogue" for NASA's image archives; if you're looking for images to illustrate these articles, it might come in handy, rather than having to dig through random webpages.

Thanks for taking action on the Sugar Momma article. I originally put up the cleanup-nonsensical tag because I thought the content was completely worthless but at the same time, thought that it might be interesting to have an article that talked about the origins of the phrase. I was actually going to just put up a vote for deletion tag in a few weeks since nothing was being done. While I appreciate your insights and can understand some of your explanations, your tone and perceived attitude (based on your postings) could perhaps use a little room for improvement.

Hopefully, the corrections and appropriate additions I've recently made to the pages in question will meet with your (and fellow wikipedians) approval.

Considering my vast experience in this venue has been over a period of 24hrs, perhaps a little slack and a mea culpa or two from both parties would be in order.

Hi, Re: your comment on Talk:Keira Knightley, "That would seem to allow as fair use thumbnails of magazine covers, aesthetic artwork, web pages, charts and graphs, still shots from movies and text of any kind (since it would be unreadable) Note the comment of "since it would be unreadable". ". I think it was only referring to the text when talking about being unreadable. I think the point is we don't want to have images the copyright owner may want to license or sell in the future, so by displaying them Wikipedia may be damaging the market. I was wondering if some way to protect Wikipedia from this argument is to automatically deface fair use images when uploaded which would prevent them being saved for aesthetic purposes (i.e. as a screensaver), while still being able to make out their content for informational purposes. My view on skimming it was that it was probably a copyvio, especially as it was uploaded, more or less fully formed, anonymously. However, the only web accessible matches were downstream, with at least one copyright violation of Wikipedia (no attribution, no backlink, no GFDL). Of course, it is quite normal for such papers to be on pay sites, with only an abstract online, for free viewing.

Spam

Please explain why you would delete primary resources and call them "spam" According to the RULES:

Primary source materials, such as text, a musical score, or media.

All the Thornton Burgess links that I added contain the original text for his works. They have also been illustrated to encourage young children to re-discover this master of story telling.

If you are "applying the rules"----please apply them fairly

I removed the links added to Thornton Burgess because in my judgement:

• they were not essential to the content of the article
• they were clearly added with the motive of promoting an external site, complete with descriptive text phrased as advertising
• they were a wide range of sites traceable to the same organisation, added by a source which was considered likely to be related to the original producer of that site, a good indication of spamming.

I encourage you to read Wikipedia:Spam. Wikipedia:External links is also useful...

Addressing a bishop

I was about to quip that one just writes it on the envelope and then direct the user to bishop since I was absolutely certain that this article would give a real answer. Thanks for the quick response, no harm no foul...The one thing I tried to do but didn't finish before getting too late last night was remove obvious duplicates. If you feel like it feel free to remove the duplicates. I got through the last 4,000 or so songs (~L-Z) before having to release it in the "wild" before it got too late. Ah, it was an anti-spam thing. I could imagine finding a great site that had a bunch of info characterized by person, and deciding to link a bunch of pages to the corresponding Wikipedia articles, but maybe this went too far. Thanks for the info. I thought it implausible that such a recent award wouldn't be freely available online, but it looks as though it might not be. I tried a download of the software suggested on the AfD but it feels like going back to the early '80s and won't run on my PC. I was rather guessing at the Korean award being his dad in the hope of somebody knowing about father/son or other unusual award patterns. I voted for deletion because this is a biography of a relentlessly self-promoting vanity press author with an apparent penchant for ripping-off Tolkein.

For another clear-cut case of something that needs to be deleted, I urge you to take a look at the Dirty Sanchez. Revert clashes

I think what happened was that the vandal had made a total of 4 edits to the article, but not all of them showed in a single 'recent changes' entry (as sometimes happens - it will say e.g. 2 edits by ipnumber and let you compare the most recent edit to the last version by someone ELSE) - so when I used popups to revert it simply reverted from the vandal's most recent edit to one of the three previous ones - had recent changes displayed (4 edits by...) as the diff option then the revert clash would not have been a problem (both I, and the other person who reverted, would have reverted to the same version) Cynical 13:57, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
