This is about tulu speakers in kerala

hey the erabrandiri are shivalli brahmins who speak tulu right.they are recent migrants if i am not wrong.but aren't there tulu speaking bunts in kasargod which is in kerala isn't it.nairs traditionally weren't there in kasargod.most nairs who presently are in kasargod are recent migrants.nair area is limited upto kannur and perhaps till hosdurg taluk in southern kasargod.after that traditionally there are is no nair presence as from kasargod to north canara there are only bunts.i haven't read the keralolpathi but the grama padhati mentions the bunts as nayaka(this is also the surname of the founder of tuluva dynasty of vijayanagara.though krishna deva raya does not use this surname because traditionally bunt adopt their mother's surname.Raya is the original surname and it has been anglicised as rai as in the case of aishwarya rai) and i beleive nayara or nair is the corruption of this word what say.anyways i don't understand this nair custom of marrying namboodiri.because bunts don't do that.but intermarriage between bunt and tulu jains does happen.since tulu jains were bunt who accepted wmbraced jainism.bunt women do marry tulu jain men.veerendra heggade the jain dharmadikari of manjunatha temple his wife is hindu .also i would like to make a another point tulu brahmins sometimes live on lands that is owned by bunt.this is called ajjal system.bunt never work as an attendant of any brahmins.infact certain orthodox bunts consider certain tulu brahmin subcastes like sthanika brahmins and tuluva hebbars as inferior.but in kerala i think namboodiri traditionally employed certain nairs as their attendants isn't it.please replyMuskeeter8 (talk) 11:13, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

If a woman enters her ethnicity as Ukrainian and her child's ethnicity as Russian, her child is counted towards fertility rate of Ukrainians and towards median age of Russians. I don't know how mixed ethnicity mothers were treated. --Itinerant1 07:02, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

regarding democraphics of Kazahstan

Hi this inquiry is about a table on demographics in Kazakhstan page. I have noticed a while back that you created the table. Since it was a welcomed addition I did not pay much attention. Today, however, I noticed that there are categories that the Soviet Union did not use in censuses, like Kara Kyrgyz. I checked (your?) citation at the bottom of the table which links to a document Phavna Dave authored. That document does not contain such a table? I am concerned because it might not be accurate. The figure of 38% Hindus is reasonable, if we include the native inhabitants of the island, who were forced to leave the diego garcia island when it was made the millitary base. I agree with some of what they say as well, but they are too fanatical to be a group that users on wikipedia can associate with. I do not believe that your addition of Israeli outposts is one relevant to the article. The title of the article specifically states settlements and not outposts. Many of the places you have listed, have already been repeated above. Also, the table you have added is not in any specific order, which can easily cause confusion to the article. I think the cricinfo people were also confused about this. Till December 2007 the relationship (On top) was given as brother. In December 2007, they changed it to father and son. The text profile was made in 2007 September. (After the U19 Qualification Round for Africa Region). They didn't rectified it so far. Irkutsk Oblast

I don't think this phrase can be substantiated by available statistics: "In Rural areas, the Fertility rate was slightly above replaceable levels, boosted by large Cossack, Starozhily, Promyshlenniki and German (Mennonite German & Bug Hollander) population." (With a reference to the Starovery)" article. While all these groups may be represented in the region, and may indeed contribute to the greater fertility of the rural population, we cannot claim that the contribution is significant for the following reasons:

• The numbers of most of these groups are probably very small in the region. E.g. the "Bug Hollanders" - the sentence about which I added to the article a couple years ago - are just a group living in a few villages; the Germans, of any, kind are probably not numerous at all; the Old Believers are described by your own reference as "dying out" (which, I hope, is an exaggeration). (And, incidentally, Irkutsk is mentioned in that article simply because the expedition members had to transfer in that city on the way to Petrovsk-Zabaykalsky (town), which is located in the entirely different region, Chita Oblast. There is, by the way, a Russian wiki article about the Semeiskiye Old Believers there).
• All of them, other than Germans, are not usually separately identifiable in Russian statistics - while Valentin Rasputin and other writers may written admiringly about the traditional lifestyle of the old settlers, there are probably few statistical data that identify them separately from the rest of the Russian rural population of the region (i.e., those whose ancestors came to the region in more recent times). Same probably goes for the Siberian Cossacks (which are not likely to ever have been too numerous in this region either). The word Promyshlenniki has a distinct 18-early 19th century ring to it (and anyway, its more of an occupation than a sub-ethnicity), and talking about them in the context of to today's demographics makes no more sense than mentioning Coureur des bois in the analysis of today's Francophone population of Saskatchewan.

To summarize, I think we should not speculate on the contribution of such small and/or poorly identified groups to the overall demographics of a region, unless we have a source that refers to them by name - and explicitly mentions their higher fertility rate or whatever. They may not be numerous, but they are present in Irkutsk Oblast. The TFR for ethnic Russians was around 1.30 in 2007. See here. I don't have sufficient data on Irkutsk Oblast as a whole. But for Ost Ordinsky and Aginsky I have data. According to the 2002 Census, ethnic Russians living there were having around 5% more TFR than ethnic Buryats. For other regions, the data doesn't matter since there are hardly any non-whites outside these Okrugs). There is something odd there. If they are proper Russians, the TFR would have been around 1.5 or 1.75 at max. But now, I think ethnic Russian TFR in rural areas (In 2008) is around 2.35 (Almost double the national average). So what is the reason?

Irkutsk was one of the first outposts established in Siberia. So obviously it should have a sizeable population of Promyshlenniki who settled there from 17th century onwards. Also there should be a sizeable population of Starozhily, who immigrated to Siberia in large numbers during mid 19th century. This is the only reason I see for the odd TFR in Irkutsk. Else ethnic Russian TFR should have been much lower than the ethnic Buryat TFR. If you look at the historic population figures you will be able to notice that Irkutsk was the most important settlement base for old settlers.

So I think, a very considerable amount of Ethnic Russians in Irkutsk will be of Promyshlenniki, Starozhily or Cossack origin. As for ethnic Germans, the most important base for Mennonites was Altai. But a small number of them also lived in surrounding Oblasts and Krais. During 1916, the Cossack population of the Transbaikal Cossack Host numbered 265,000 people. What can I say? I have not studied demographics data, and I am sure you have better knowledge of them - but I don't think that there is anything surprising per se in different fertility rate for the same ethnic group in different regions, because of different living conditions and local history. For all we know, higher fertility may be associated with certain population subgroups. But asserting that it is (or is not) so in a wiki article, without actual published evidence, is very much original research, and not very much supported by the facts on the ground either. Namely:

• Promyshlenniki, as far as I know (and as the article indicates), was mostly used for hunters in the Arctic and subarctic (including Alaska), about 200 years ago. This is what the word meant, anyway (promyshlennik, from Russian promyshljat - "to hunt (for living, rather than for recreation)"). The Russian word with this meaning is obsolete (these days, I believe, the word promyshlennik is used to mean "industrialist", while a "professional hunter in Siberia" may perhaps be promyslovik). In any event the word, as far as I know, is not used to refer to any currently living people; most of the descendants of those people who were called promyshlenniki 200 years are very likely doing something else today than hunting the sea otters in the Arctic or even the sable in Irkutsk Oblast, and may not be even aware of what (some of) their ancestors did for living; meanwhile those people who are professional hunters today must be a very small fraction of the total ethnically-Russian rural population of any Siberian region (most of which, after all, are engaged in regular agriculture, animal husbandry and forestry). (On the other hand, if you are interested in today's descendants of Promyshlenniki, you should read on Russkoye Ustye and other similarly isolated villages in the Arctic, where the old hunting- and fishing-based culture was preserved well into the mid-20th century).
• Baikal Cossacks are described as having been based beyond (east of) the Baikal, i.e. in today's Buryatia and Chita Oblast, and not west of the lake (in Irkutsk Oblast). This would make a lot of sense, as the Cossack hosts very usually formed in border areas. It may be that many people east of the Baikal still identify themsleves as Cossacks (or Cossack descendants) - but even if they do, it would be very much "original research" to claim anything about the demographics of them (or their descendants) in those regions, unless we have something unambiguous to cite.
• Starozhily (in the technical sense, i.e., descendants of the settlers that had come to the region between 1700, as per this description: http://books.google.com.au/books?id=CquTz6ps5YgC&pg=PA554&lpg=PA554&dq=starozhily&source=web&ots=DvyK5mb29i&sig=81VHsXcBksjWP9V5jBAHHDOBUmM&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=4&ct=result , rather than the Russian colloquial meaning "long-time residents") certainly should be still present in the region, e.g. in the Angara valley - but I am afraid that their numbers may be dwarfed by the descendants of the settlers that came later, especially during the late-Czarist-era migration campaigns (in the late 19th-early 20th century) and during the Soviet era. Mind you, some of those people also have had several generations history in the region, and well may have different fertility patterns from their cousins in European Russian or Belarus or Ukraine - but they would not qualify as "Starozhily" as per the ethnographers definitions.

To summarize, there may be lots of reasons for the different demographic rural patterns in a particular Siberian regions from those in other parts of the country, but there may be lots of reasons to explain them (e.g., a certain area had a lot of Kulaks resettled to it in 1930... or more isolated lifestyle results in different mentality than in a more "suburban" village area in central Russia... or incomes are higher / cost of living is lower, so that people can afford more children...), and we would be very much engaging in OR trying to pinpoint to a particular factor. My primary contribution was to create an introduction more in keeping with the provisions of WP:LEDE, and to introduce a more readable prose in place of the previous emphasis on tables and bullets. The current result is far from perfect, but I think it is much more reader-friendly. My concern is, is it factually accurate? If you are knowledgeable, please give it a lookover and make any necessary corrections. It would also be very appreciated if some additional sources could be added to the article. Hi, Just went through the page Anti-Shannar riots of Sivakasi. Even if I do sort out this issue, I ll only be creating more problems. This conflict was actually won by the Nadars. 1500 Nadars were able to make 5000 maravars flee. Including lines like this will aggravate the maravars. The Maravars and Nadars have been rivals for more than 100 years. So far I have only edited articles related to the Nadar community because it was simple and small. :) So the thevars might think that I am actually with the Nadars in this matter. If that happens my neutral reputation will be spoiled. I am an inexperienced editor. Your call. What do you want me to do? The Thevars are even more sensitive than the Nadars. Hmm.... I don't know. The article was started by a History student who is currently residing outside India. I reverted some page blanking there and Nadars started accusing me of being racist. The guy who started the article seems uninterested right now. I think it will be better to refer this article to someone who actually knows the background info. Thank you for the sources. Yes, I've seen the first one - but that's a theory based on mythology and as such it cannot be relied on to be factual. But there's no problem in mentioning that within the article (I believe it's already mentioned). The second link is to a website and that might not satisfy WP:RS. I suggest not mentioning that Nairs are Kshatriyas at all since it is a contentious and hazy issue; we can simply mention in further down in the article, in the Origins section. --vi5in^[talk] 23:28, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
