Installation Problems edit

Run with... (solved) edit

I'm using FireFox; I'm getting a generic download. I saved the file as .exe, it didn't work. I downloaded the .cab and erased the .exe. Executing the cab got an error...any FireFox users that can give me a step by step for this? T K E 04:31, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ah, I got it. Extraction. T K E 04:34, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, let me go add that to the page (which I should have done yesterday and after about five cases where this has happened). AmiDaniel (Talk) 04:50, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Setup error... edit

I got "Invalid command-line parameters. Unable to continue." when trying to run the setup (after having extracted it). Running the exe file in the CAB works fine (though I get an invalid login for some reason...), however. Jude (talk, contribs, email) 05:37, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Are you using FireFox? There seem to be issues in using the .exe as compaired to the .cab, so I'm trying to clarify. T K E 06:05, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I am. Jude (talk,contribs,email) 07:00, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
The setup cab is corrupt ... I've just now discovered that I can't get it to install correctly on any machine. Those who have managed to run by simply extracting the files were just lucky. I'm working on a new setup, but for now you can try copying all of the files from the cabinet except for the .exe's to your System32 directory. Tell me if that works. AmiDaniel (Talk) 04:59, 11 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Crash On Run (fixed v1.1.1) edit

After the initial run, the program crashes as soon as I run it. Deleting the settings files, fixes it, but again only for one run. Could it be my various JS scripts? I really don't want to have to disable those to have to run VP. IE 6.0, Java 1.5.0_06 (JVM), Screen Res 1152x864. — Ilyanep (Talk) 02:13, 11 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hmm...and now it works. Weird. — Ilyanep (Talk) 02:16, 11 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nope...same crashing persists. — Ilyanep (Talk) 02:19, 11 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

By settings files, do you mean the MyCount.txt, CustomButtons.txt, etc.? It doesn't seem like that should be crashing it unless you're modifying them. And what do you mean by crashing? Does it give you an error message? AmiDaniel (Talk) 04:52, 11 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes I meant those, and I didn't modify them at all. By crashing, I mean it gives me the Windows XP 'Do you want to send an error report to Microsoft' message, I click don't send and it closes. — Ilyanep (Talk) 13:23, 11 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Oh, that's really not good then. It sounds like a memory leak, especially since you've been able to fix it by deleting the setting files (thus, the app thinks it's an initial run). This might have to do with the Customization ability I just implemented for the Rollback buttons on ... I believe, Thursday ... I haven't had much time to test since I made those changes, and it's entirely possible that I accidentally forgot to close a thread. Thanks for bringing this to my attention! Let me proofread my code a bit more and hopefully get this fix by the weekend. AmiDaniel (Talk) 17:07, 11 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
It may have to do with that, cause it may or may not have started after I tried to customize the warning buttons. Hopefully you can find what's causing it :) (oh and I hope your life gets less stressful in the future) — Ilyanep (Talk) 20:04, 11 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thank God!!! I think (crosses fingers) I finally fixed it ... possibly the most annoying bug I have ever encountered in my life. I absolutely hate this browser control, not because it's a bad control but rather because there is practically no documentation on it. What seems to have been the problem is that I was passing it too lengthy a string, and rather than simply producing a normal, debuggable error it would simply crash (unhandled exception in IE). I think I've finally got it all sorted out though, and so it should now work in version 1.0.1 when I upload it. Sorry about that, but I'm surprised no one else reported this bug; it began for you (and eventually for me) when the Welcome page became too long for the control to handle. Now the app simply strips everything unnecessary off the page when it loads. Sorry if I'm not making any sense... my brain's a little fried. But I fixed it!!! AmiDaniel (Talk) 23:54, 11 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Pats you on the back.Once it's rockin', I'd buy you a drink if I could. T K E 04:46, 13 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Thanks and good job! I really need to learn a good programming language [I was learning C# for a while but stopped :\] — Ilyanep (Talk) 03:42, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
So, where do we get version 1.0.1? I have version 1.0.0 and it crashes on startup. It was working fine several days ago. --Stephane Charette 06:23, 15 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'll be releasing version 1.1 sometime this weekend ... possibly even tomorrow. Sorry about the delay in getting these bugs fixed. AmiDaniel (Talk) 06:27, 15 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

screenshot of problems (solved) edit

I'll let the image speak by itself. In the beginning I thought this (missing rollback) wouldn't be a problem, as I have popups and godmode-light, but godmode crashes VP (only works with FF anyway) and popups don't show any link, therefore I need you to correct this. Fetofs Hello! 16:41, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm guessing, as you hinted, that this is a g-mode light problem. I did, however, test it with godmode-light running a couple of times and didn't have any problems ... but I have made some changes since then. Could you do my favor? Open up a diff in your normal browser, click "view source code", and then copy and paste the cource code in an email to: dccannon@hotmail.com. That might help me sort it out. Thanks. AmiDaniel (Talk) 19:07, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I guess that by "normal browser" you mean FF, right? Email sent. Fetofs Hello! 01:41, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Preferably IE, but the HTML source should hopefully be the same in both. I'm also gonna try copying your monobook to mine to see if I can sort this out. AmiDaniel (Talk) 02:19, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Oops, sorry. I got your message, and it's exactly what I asked for. Give me a little bit of time to take a look at it, and I'll get back to you. Thanks for your patience! AmiDaniel (Talk) 05:04, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot, Daniel! Fetofs Hello! 22:08, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yay! Glad to see this version got it working for you. Let me know if you have any more problems (and especially if you experience anymore crashes, as I may have an "ugly" fix for that). Thanks for your help in improving VP! AmiDaniel (Talk) 02:17, 17 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

div tags in speedy warning template (solved) edit

I've noticed that in at least one warning template added by the program, the speedy deletion warning, the div tag isn't closed, so that any further comments added to the talk page afterwards are formatted in the same way and highlighted in the same color, as here. Can this be altered? Thanks. -- Vary | Talk 03:21, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for bringing this to my attention! I found the bug in the prod and csd warnings, where I simply forgot to add a </div> to the end, and have corrected it. Hopefully there won't be any more problems with it. Again, thanks. AmiDaniel (Talk) 03:56, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Great, thanks for responding so quickly. This looks like a great project! -- Vary | Talk 04:03, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Firefox Problems (solved) edit

  • Windows 98SE, using FF 1.5.0.1 (IE 6.0 is installed), 512 MB RAM, DSL (Direct but slow), 1024x768 UPDATE on listboxes is not working.

Will try rebooting. Will also try on Win2000 soon, WinXP tomorrow. rossnixon

I still don't totally understand what you mean by "it's not working." Are you receiving an error message, or is the list simply not being populated? AmiDaniel (Talk) 10:43, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
If you're using the "Enhanced Recent Changes," that could be causing the problem. Consider changing the setting under "my preferences" in Wikipedia, and see if that cures it. AmiDaniel (Talk) 10:45, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ah yes! Changed that, and it is working now. Thanks. rossnixon 10:56, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
No problem. I'm glad to see it was something simple and expected, rather than something I'd have to do a whole re-write to fix =). AmiDaniel (Talk) 10:58, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

mnuSetEditLimit Cancel (fixed v1.0.1) edit

Windows XP Pro SP2. Press file>set edit limit>cancel And you get Runtime error 13. Computerjoe's talk 11:00, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, that's a feature I just added yesterday per user request and have hardly tested it at all (I prefer to just use 20 edits per update). I've now fixed it here (it was the <insert any obscenity> IsNumeric function that much to my dismay doesn't check for null strings), but until I release 1.0.1 just try to avoid hitting cancel. Sorry about that, and thanks for alerting me of the bug. AmiDaniel (Talk) 11:28, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nothing happens pressing update (solved) edit

When I press update, nothing happens! Why? Computerjoe's talk 11:10, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Be sure that you're not running with the "Enhanced Recent Changes" mode; that will cause it not to work. AmiDaniel (Talk) 11:25, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
That was it. You need to show people how to tell if they are. I forgot about that setting; and thought it was a user script. :P Computerjoe's talk 11:26, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I wonder if perhaps you might advise as to how one turns off "Enhanced Recent Changes" mode; I'm having the same problem as Computer Joe but haven't his computer acumen. One other question, if I may (I can post this question separately in a new section, if you like): I've used the tool just twice, each time to PROD, but after neither use did any edit summary appear (see, e.g., here); though I dummy-edited in order that my edit summaries might note the PRODding, I wonder if there's a change I need to make in order that edit summaries with the relevant info and "using VandalProof" appear. Thanks in advance. Joe 05:07, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
1) To turn off "Enhanced Recent Changes," go to My Preferences (in Wikipedia), click the Recent changes tab, and then uncheck Enhanced Recent Changes.
Thanks much for "ERC"; I never thought to look at "My Preferences". Joe 19:41, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

%P rather than article name in warning edit

See this edit. This edit happened when I clicked on {{Nn-warn}} but not having the article name on my clipboard to paste in I clicked cancel, expecting it not to give the warning. Instead it gave the warning with the 'blank' %P instead. I believe clicking cancel should cancel giving the warning completely. Petros471 16:39, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Now fixed in version 1.0.1. Thanks for reporting the bug! AmiDaniel (Talk) 02:48, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Talks the talk, but refuses to revert (fix in newer versions) edit

Hi, thanks for approving me (and with such speed, I might add). I'm sorry to immediately dump problems on you, but this is just embarrassimg: the rollback+warning button puts the correct warning and link on the vandal's page, but does not in fact revert anything. Am I just doing something wrong? Oh, and the user colors are just black.

Seeing the questions you asked from another user with a similar problem - Win XP, IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158, MonoBook, no enchanced recent changes (removed prior to installing), anti-vandal tool and Vandal warning toolbox. There was a problem with the installation, I downloaded and extracted the cab file, there were 3 different error messages:

1. "Invalid command-line parameters. Unable to continue."

2. "Setup was not completed successfully."

3. "Run-time error '5': Invalid procedure call or argument." (the second part is below the first one)

After which the exe accepts my username and I successfully log in.--Chodorkovskiy 14:24, 11 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yep, all of these seem to be stemming from problematic installations. I'm assuming you probably also get annoying script messages everytime you load a page? Once I can get my setup working, I think the vast majority of these problems will disappear. I really am sorry, and if anyone has had problems with Package and Deployment Wizard that they managed to fix, please tell me! AmiDaniel (Talk) 14:32, 11 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Don't be sorry. You've designed the best anti-vandal tool I ever heard of. So what if it isn't working properly yet? That's why it's called "development". And no, I actually don't get any annoying script messages when loading a page.--Chodorkovskiy 15:05, 11 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Im in partly the same situation as Chodorkovskiy. I installed last night and get no errors or problems (running from the extracted CAB), but i just noticed today that its not actually reverting, just leaving warnings. Pressing just "Revert" takes you to the save page but doesnt actually push save, if this helps. Maybe that step is somehow not happening, because when i revert+warn i see the save page go by. -Lanoitarus (talk) .:. 17:19, 11 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • This also just happened to me. I found vandalism in progress at Richard Belzer being done by an anon, hit the first "test" button and it placed the warning on the talk page but otherwise left the article itself unchanged. I'm getting the script errors but otherwise there's no sign I had any problems with the download. Incidentally, is it possible to set the tool to flag certain "catch phrases"? There's one vandal who keeps hopping IP addresses, but the common denominator is his repeated use of the term "hen fap". 23skidoo 04:58, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • You need to install popups (add {{subst:navpop}} to your monobook). Unfortunately, VP is currently, as a result of my mistake, dependent upon popups--the next release won't be. As to flagging catch phrases, VP does not retrieve the rss feed and as such the contents of the change are not known until you load the diff--I earlier had a function that would filter edits in much the same way that Lupin's tool did; however, it was simply too slow to use. If the vandal's using the catchphrase in the edit summary, however, that could be easily implemented. I'll try reincorporating some form of search in the next release, but I'm not promising anything. AmiDaniel (Talk) 05:12, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

not fully reverting edit

When a vandal makes several consecutive edits in a row, it's important to fully revert all of these edits, rather than just the last edit. The "rollback" function available to admins automatically does this, but many of the vandal-reverting tools ("godmode-light", VandalProof, and others) don't seem to do this. See for instance this VandalProof revert, which doesn't do the right thing and leaves vandalism in place: [1]. -- Curps 06:45, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

When you click rollback and the last edit was made by the same user, it will prompt you to view all the edits made by that user. If you click yes, you'll then see a diff between the last edit by the current user and the last edit by the previous user, and clicking rollback again will revert all the way back to the last edit by the previous user. As there are often cases where a user makes a series of good edits and then some random test edit, in other words where only the last edit need be reverted, I leave this in the hands of the users to either do a "full" revert or a simple one-edit revert. (The user can also open up the page history and load a diff between any two edits and can revert to any version.) Thus, VP will revert all edits by the user, but only if you want it to. AmiDaniel (Talk) 20:57, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hey, yeah, that was me. The script bug was the problem there, because when the rollback screen came up so did the error message. I'm going to reinstall now using Computerjoe's package and see what happens. T K E 02:55, 11 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Crash edit

The program crashes after it loads the start up page. It brings up the send error report screen. Computerjoe's talk 09:06, 12 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

See above, 2.1 Crash on Run. AmiDaniel (Talk) 22:12, 12 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Moderator Tools Bug (fixed) edit

I see I'm a moderator, though I'm not on the list. So I press moderate user list, it's blank. I press update user list, it's blank. I press done, and the userlist blanks on the page. Computerjoe's talk 20:17, 13 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Also, if I press welcome user or update list after I add a user I get runtime error 438. Computerjoe's talk 20:26, 13 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Also, when I log-in - I get the login error. Computerjoe's talk 20:29, 13 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
The problem with the welcome button is one I was already aware of, and I've actually just identified and repaired the bug that caused the page-blanking problem, which will no longer exist in the next release (likely on Saturday). AmiDaniel (Talk) 22:51, 13 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Edit summaries (fixed) edit

(I'd asked this question with one above, but I'm moving it to a new header in order that anyone else similarly affected might comment.) One other question, if I may: I've used the tool just twice, each time to PROD, but after neither use did any edit summary appear (see, e.g., here); though I dummy-edited in order that my edit summaries might note the PRODding, I wonder if there's a change I need to make in order that edit summaries with the relevant info and "using VandalProof" appear. Thanks in advance. Joe 05:07, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I truly don't know why it didn't add an edit summary. I use the prod quite frequently and I've never once noticed it not leaving an edit summary. Do you receive any warning messages, such as '.wpSummary is null or not an object'? AmiDaniel (Talk) 05:25, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
With respect to the edit summary, I didn't get an error message, and I haven't been getting edit summaries with any other edits (see, e.g., here, where I gave myself the {{preview}} template without edit summary), whether at user talk or in article mainspace. It doesn't seem that anyone else reports this problem, so perhaps it's something on my end, although I can't imagine what it might be. In any case, no hurry in resolving it, inasmuch as it seems isolated. Joe 19:43, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Just a thought: Do you maybe have "force edit summaries enabled"? That hopefully shouldn't be make a difference, but it might. Another user had problems with a script that did essentially the same thing, that wouldn't let you save without providing a summary. AmiDaniel (Talk) 19:49, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps my Wikipedia illiteracy rears its head again, as the only similar button of which I know is the "Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary" box under "Editing" at "My Preferences"; I have tried VP with that feature both on and off without success. If the "force edit summaries" toggle is elsewhere, I'd very much appreciate your pointing me there. It'd be alright if the program were forcing me to provide an edit summary, but here it actually seems to prevent my adding one. In any case, it seems strange that I should be the only one to have this specific problem, but I haven't any clue as to what I might've done to engender it. Joe 19:56, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yep, that was the setting I was talking about. If that didn't do it, then these seems like a java problem. In looking at your monobook.js, I see that you're not running any tools at all, so that can't be causing it (or can it?). Let me just a list a few possible causes: 1) Is your Wikipedia skin set to "monobook." 2) What version of Java are you using? 3) What version of Internet Explorer are you using? 4) What version of Windows are you using (hopefully shouldn't affect it)? 4) Are you having any other problems with VandalProof (that may be related)? AmiDaniel (Talk) 20:05, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
(1) Wiki skin is "monobook". (2) I'm using version 5.0, which I know isn't the most recent; I can surely download a newer version if you think that'd help. (3) IE 6.0 (SP2?). (4) Windows XP. (5) No other VP problems at all; it's quite a great program. (Edit: Well, there is one problem I've had that I assumed was altogether unrelated, but I suppose I should let those who know more determine that. When I use any of the buttons that provide "rollback" and "test" templates, the program inserts the "test" warning at the relevant talk page but does not actually rollback the edit.) Joe 20:21, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
That may actually be quite relevant. Can you try something for me? Try clicking this link and see if it reverts my sandbox to the version that states "Your attempt to rollback the page has worked." AmiDaniel (Talk) 05:08, 15 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I do, in fact, get that sandbox page. Joe 05:10, 15 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Just as I thought, it's not actually reverting the page. For some reason the autoclick and autosummary ampersand switches aren't working on your computer. I have no idea why, but they're not. I've actually been thinking about using java instead of the Wiki switches to do the autoclicks and autosummaries because I think it might be faster ... once I make the transition to java I think your problems will go away (though most likely not in this release). Still seems strange though. Could you maybe go to My Preferences / Editing (in Wikipedia) and tell me what you have checked on? AmiDaniel (Talk) 05:15, 15 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sure. I've checked "Enable section editing via [edit] links", "Edit box has full width", "Show edit toolbar (JavaScript)", "Show preview before edit box", "Add pages I create to my watchlist", "Add pages I edit to my watchlist", and "Prompt me when entering a blank edit sumamry" (although, as noted supra, I've tried VP with the last setting toggled both on and off). Once more, inasmuch as I seem to be only one thus affected and insofar as you've a prospective fix already in the works, please don't feel that you need to spend time resolving this problem; you've done a great deal of good work here already. Joe 05:26, 15 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Although you may be the only one so far, others may later have problems with it, and the bugs you're reporting are pretty major, so let's get 'em sort out if we can. Let me first of all try getting you setup the way I am to see if that cures it. Try unchecking all options under My Preferences / Editing except for Enable Section Editing via Links, Show edit toolbar, and show preview before edit box. Then try clicking this link again. AmiDaniel (Talk) 05:33, 15 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I still get the "Your attempt to rollback..." page. :( Joe 05:39, 15 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yep, and still no reversion. Well, I'm stumped right now. Let me try changing a few settings to see if I can replicate it, and after I think about it a little I'll give you a response. Thanks for your help in improving the program, and I hope I get this sorted out. AmiDaniel (Talk) 05:41, 15 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Aha!! God, am I dense. Try copying this into User:Jahiegel/monobook.js to install popups:

// User:Lupin/popups.js

document.write('<script type="text/javascript" src="'

            + '&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"></script>');

And then purge the cache by pressing Ctrl+F5, and click this link one last time. I didn't even realize that the switches my app uses were depependent upon popups' routines. Even more incentive for me to go to Java. Tell me if this works. AmiDaniel (Talk) 06:04, 15 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

My apologies for taking so long to get back to you. The good news is that, upon installing popups and clicking on the link, I did successfully revert the page. The bad news is that, when I use rollback + test with VandalProof, the test template is given but the page is not rolled back; edit summaries also don't appear. But it seems like we're on the right track... :) Joe 17:09, 15 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I downloaded the 1.1 and found that each of the problems about which I wrote above (viz., the absence of edit summaries and the failure to rollback when using "rollback" and "test") is resolved. If you made changes to effect this, thanks very much; if not, we'll chalk it up to Wikiluck. In any case, thanks so much for your time in dealing with this esoteric problem. Joe 16:51, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Record Mistakes stopped working edit

For some reason, the "Record Mistakes" feature has stopped working. When I click on it, it asks for the ID number of the wrong revert, but nothing comes up after that. And it doesn't record it to the VandalismMistakes page either. Any ideas? :) Adrian(Talk)

How do you determine the ID number of the revert? I've made one mistake but I don't know how to get the ID number. Also, my VandalismLog is empty--how does info get into there-manually, automatic, etc? Rlevse 10:14, 18 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I usually click on the date of the edit in history, right click then copy it from the url (it should be after oldid=) Adrian(Talk) 10:26, 18 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
OK, but I have the same problem as you, when I enter the oldid, it asks me if I'm it wasn't vandalism, but it's referring to the wrong article. It also doesn't put it in my VandalismMistakes. Any idea why my VandalismLog is empty? Rlevse 10:31, 18 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ah, i've got it. I was thinking too complicated with the ID, it's actually the edit ID recorded by VandalProof. If you go to Vandalism log -> Update Log -> VandalismLog and click update log. Then go your your log page and the ID is under the "No" column. This has also fixed the bug I was reporting, doh. Adrian(Talk) 10:47, 18 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
OK, the only problem I had was how to view VandalismLog (I've finally figured out the one in the program is just code for the header/footer. I opened my VandalismLog in notepad and saw it was wikicode. Hmmm, how to view it in Wiki...then I finally thought, maybe it made a subpage for me and I was right, seeing there are three: VandalismStats, VandalismLog, and VandalismMistakes. I'll write this up on the Help page for others so they don't go through this. Thanks for helping. Rlevse 21:12, 18 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Okay, I'm really sorry for not explaining this better--it is sort of one of those things that, since I wrote, I know its quirky way of working, but no one else does. I'll update the help page with some more info about this (as I should have earlier), but just briefly to answer your (plural) questions:

  1. In order to load the log, stats, and mistake to your page, you have to go to Update Log, and then click the respective buttons on the dialog to load the log's contents to your user subpages. The log will be stored at /VandalismLog, the stats at /VandalismStats, and the mistakes at /VandalismMistakes (all in your individual userspace).
  2. If you edit a user talk page where you left a warning, you will see commented out <!--the ID number--> of the revert before your signature and after the warning. It corresponds with the entry in your vandalism log.
  3. Thank you so much Rlevse for all your hard work on the help page. I've been extremely bogged bown with many non-wikipedian things lately and have spent all my Wikipedia time dealing with bugs/problems; in other words, I've had little to no time to work on the help pages myself. I also appologize for not responding to your question the help page's discussion page--I saw it go by my watchlist a couple of times but never got around to responding. Report to AIV doesn't work edit

It adds the report to the user talk page, not WP:AIV. Computerjoe's talk 18:14, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hmmm ... I haven't had any problems with that yet. What exactly were you doing when you clicked on "Report to AIV"; in other words, were you viewing/edit a user's talk page, viewing a diff, etc.? AmiDaniel (Talk) 02:49, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Talk page. Computerjoe's talk 07:08, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Really? I was pretty sure that I had tested it quite extensively with no problems. Let me do some testing and debugging and I'll get back to you. For now I'd recommend that you don't use the AIV utility. Sorry about this. AmiDaniel (Talk) 21:22, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
How embarassing: I indicated on the Welcome page that the bug had been fixed, and then today when I went to report someone, it did exactly what you said: posted it on the user's talk page. Now, I promise, it has been fixed in the next release. AmiDaniel (Talk) 20:08, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

It doesn't appear to be reverting... at all. edit

It's weird, it's going into the edit screen of the old version, then immediately going to the user talk's edit screen, without reverting in between. I tried blanking my own monobook to see if there was some kind of problem with that, but it didn't fix anything. --Rory096(block) 18:01, 21 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

You need to make sure that Lupin popups is in it. ... Copy the below into your monobook.

{{subst:navpop}}

Rollback function not saving edit

When VP attempts to save the previous version of the page, its getting a script error "regDropSubPages.exec...1 is null or not an object". IE 6.0, also running FF 1.5 open at the same time. After throwing this error twice and failing to save the article, it does correctly warn the user and is saving it correctly. .:.Jareth.:. babelfish 12:41, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

This seems to be a JS error that a lot of users are experiencing. I'm going to try to replicate on my machines using different versions of JS, different install options, etc., and will hopefully find a cure for it. What version of Java are you using? AmiDaniel (Talk) 21:12, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sun Java, Version 1.5.0 (build 1.5.0_06-b05) .:.Jareth.:. babelfish 18:57, 11 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'm getting the same problem too. I don't know how to see what JavaScript version I have, but I have Windows XP with the latest updates installed.. I normally use Firefox so I haven't done anything special to my IE installation. TH 11:47, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

A Runtime Error has occured... edit

I can't seem to get this to run. When I first downloaded it, the Start Page opened normally, but when I tried to log in from inside the program, I got the message " A Runtime Error has occured. Do you wish to debug? Line:38 Error: Expected ')' ". This now appears every time VandalProof opens a page. I also get the "Your log-in request failed" message, despite being on the approved list and having logged in, both inside the program and in IE. I tried re-installing several times, but no luck, which leads me to believe that this is a problem with my computer, not the program. Any suggestions? --Doug (talk) 10:42, 18 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

The log-in problem may have just been fixed (try it again). If the error messages you're talking about Internet Explorer Script Errors, see the first entry on this page for details in fixing them. AmiDaniel (Talk) 00:37, 19 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I had a go but can't seem to fix it. Never mind, I can't see this problem reported anywhere else, so I'm convinced it's a problem on my end and not a bug with the software. I ought to get around to a reformat sometime soon anyway, hopefully it'll fix itself after that (I subscribe to the 'scorched earth' school of PC repair). Thanks anyway! --Doug (talk) 20:37, 19 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hmm ... well, you're on the list (I just checked). Are you using the monobook skin? If not, try switching your skin to monobook. Seeing as the first page is loading, it must not be a systemic problem in the app, just minor screen scraping that isn't working. Also make sure to type in your username as DGJM (case sensitive). Are you experiencing a crash at startup by chance? AmiDaniel (Talk) 07:22, 20 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Oops, terribly sorry for not replying. As it turns out, the problem fixed itself. I'm guessing it was a problem in IE as I had the same problem with AWB: Every page I opened with it had a "An error has occured: do you wish to debug?" I had to click "No" every time to continue, very annoying, natch. It seems to have fixed itself in both programs: lord knows how. Could be because I ran Windows Update again, I don't know, the error simply stopped occuring. (I was running monobook before as well, so I'm pretty sure it was a problem at my end). Thanks! --Doug (talk) 13:01, 11 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

'Your log-in request failed' edit

Despite being added to the list of authorised users, I'm getting rejected with the above message. I am currently logged in to Wikipedia. Any advice? --BillC 10:27, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I got that, but just clicked __login__ inside VandalProof. rossnixon 10:31, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'm getting that a lot as well. —       nathanrdotcom (TCW) 15:09, 12 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I just checked and you're on the list, so that shouldn't be the problem. Check that in the upper-right corner of the browser screen your user name is displayed (as it typically is within Wikipedia). If you typically use FF, Opera, or Nerscape (in other words, not IE) as your primary browser, it's likely that the Wikipedia auto-login isn't stored in IE's cookies (VP uses IE components, so you'll need to be logged in within IE). That should fix it. AmiDaniel (Talk) 10:41, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sorted, thanks. I needed to follow rossnixon's advice. (I'm a FireFox user). Now let's take this baby for a spin. --BillC 10:46, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm logged in in IE, but I still get the "your login request failed" error. And funny thing is, it shows me as logged in inside VandalProof. — Kimchi.sg | Talk 11:55, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

How did you type in your username? If you see "(Kimchi.sg)" in the form caption and you're logged into Wikipedia within VP as Kimchi.sg(case-sensitive) then I truly don't know what the problem is. The only thing that I could I think of is a problem with the period and the html converters. Let me run a few tests. AmiDaniel (Talk) 12:03, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I did a test run using your username and it didn't error until it went to verify that I was logged into Wikipedia as Kimchi.sg (which I'm obviously not). Just a thought, are you using a skin other than Monobook or Simple? AmiDaniel (Talk) 12:06, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'm using the Simple skin. This is a screenshot of the failure page, if it helps. :-) — Kimchi.sg | Talk 12:58, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Have you tried using Monobook? That shouldn't make a diffence but it might. I'm still thinking it has to do with the period in your name; it's possibly translating that to some HTML char equivalent. Let me investigate some more. AmiDaniel (Talk) 02:31, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

(un-indenting) Nailed it down to choice of skin. I switched to monobook and logged in effortlessly. — Kimchi.sg | Talk 03:42, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I had to exit out of FF, open IE and login, then open VP. That resolved the login issue. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 13:57, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • For the record on this issue, you don't have to exit out of FireFox; you can log in to both at the same time. Like the AutoWikiBrowser, it just taps into your IE cookies and preferences. T K E 04:52, 13 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm having similar problems - I login to wikipedia via IE piggy backed onto an AOL dial up (AOL never seems to save sessional-cookies whatever my settings, hence separate IE window to log into wikipedia), my username is 'Davidruben', and I've tried various permutations of my user name - is this just my computer playing up ? :-) David Ruben Talk 16:20, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Are you sure that in the upper-right corner of VandalProof's browser window, you see your username (as you would when logged in). I've checked and double-checked that you're on the list, so it must be the result of either a skin you're using or that you're logged in correctly to Wikipedia in the browser. AmiDaniel (Talk) 02:31, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ah read comments re monobook vs Classic skin - a quick change to my settings, restart Vandalproof, retype in my username to force a reverification of username - and I was up & running. Many thanks. Now just have to learn difference in roll-back options that required manual confirmation (thus safe to "try-out") and the warnings that seem to select & post in one go (so great care needed not to accidentally click on wrong one, else might cause unintentional offense to another editor !) Seems like a great tool :-) David Ruben Talk 18:33, 11 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

My login fails as well, but this isn't unusual with software due to (for example) the "!" in my name. VP did work for once while my name was listed temporarily in both the approved and pending sections, but after that, I couldn't get authorized.

Regards —-- That Guy, From That Show! (esperanza) 2006-04-16 06:54
Yeah, the one time you got through was when we had that mass mod bug. Have you tried v1.1 to see if you could log in? If not you could certainly make a temp sockpuppet, add your own signature, and link your talk/user pages to your main account, and I'd be glad to add it. Sorry about that. AmiDaniel (Talk) 07:01, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm afraid my login fails as well. It doesn't seem to be software, skin or cookie problems. Do I need to wait for my name to be activated, even though I've been approved? Thanks! -Digresser 00:57, 22 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Your name's been activated and there don't seemed to be any odd characters in your username, so it's likely that you're not logged in within the incorporated IE browser. Try clicking on the link titled "logging into Wikipedia" within the log-in failure message. 02:12, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
I tried that before, and I've just tried it again to no avail. It thanks me for logging in and then takes me to the failure page. Is there anything else you can recommend? Thanks! -Digresser 02:42, 22 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've uninstalled and re-installed VandalProof and now it works! Thanks again! -Digresser 07:07, 22 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm having similar problems. I start IE and log into Wiki. Then I start VP and it shows my login name in the upper left corner, but the login always fails with a failure screen and then the info screen comes up. Then if I click the "try logging into Wiki" option, I get in. Also, I just uninstalled VP and reinstalled it and I still have the same problem. Rlevse 11:55, 22 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

This likely has to do with your cookie settings in IE. When you log in, do you check the "Remember Me" box? If you don't do that then you will have to log in everytime. Also check that you are not automatically deleting cookies under Tools/Internet Options/Temporary Internet Files (in IE). AmiDaniel (Talk) 20:17, 22 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I didn't used to check "remember me", but just now I did several times, logged out/logged in, closed the while IE browser, etc and no luck. I also changed Tools/Internet Options/Temporary Internet Files/Settings from "automatically" to "never" and no luck either. Rlevse 00:09, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I just tried something else: I set my LAN settings to "automatically detect settings" (I thought this was on, but it wasn't). Now when I start VP, I initially get the login failure screen, but then instead of getting the "try logging into Wiki" screen, I now get the successful login screen-;) Rlevse 00:16, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Aha, yes I was just going to suggest that you check your LAN settings. Unfortunately WP has some weird issues with cookies and IP addresses... I don't totally have it all figured out. Glad you got it fixed! AmiDaniel (Talk) 00:18, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
It's a bit quirky still. Usually it logs me in, but sometimes I get the "try logging into wiki" page. Rlevse 00:02, 24 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Now, eventhough I haven't changed my settings, it doesn't log in initially at all. I have to use the "try wiki" link every time, sigh... Rlevse 11:52, 28 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

NOW it DOESN'T WORK AT ALL AGAIN, even though I didn't change the settings. GO FIGURE. Rlevse 16:23, 5 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have determined that the problem is not with vandal proof, but with the user's browser settings. The problem is being worked out on my talk page.Eagle talk 23:01, 11 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
