Continuing on about categories :) Is it a better idea for me to just do what was done in Category:Banks established in 2007? ~ Anastasia (talk) 00:14, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Alright, I'll do that then :) Thanks again! ~ Anastasia (talk) 00:17, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Amaryllis

Im writing an article on a person and have been reviewed by wikipedia and asked for some editing like avoiding peacock terms and double check my reference as there was a error. Can you suggest me how I could bring down the tone for my article?

Thanks Selva (Dr.C.Ramasubramanian (talk) 12:51, 26 June 2014 (UTC))

@Dr.C.Ramasubramanian: At Wikipedia we want to keep our articles neutral in tone. Stating the facts without our personal opinions included. Basically just don't have things like "Samaritan in the field of Mental Health" and "rich experience" in the article. Also we discourage the creation of autobiographies. --AmaryllisGardener talk 13:11, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks Amaryllis. I didnt quite understand what you meant by creating autobiographies? Did you mean something like this

"Sometime during my school years, I was passionate about Tamil and thought I could be a very fine Tamil professor. Later at medical college I was influenced and fascinated by the Heart as no other organ in the entire body is as delicate and given a risk in its functioning causes death and thus aspired becoming a Cardio Vascular surgeon until an irony of fate struck my family”.

Thanks selva (Dr.C.Ramasubramanian (talk) 13:24, 26 June 2014 (UTC)).

@Dr.C.Ramasubramanian: No, because that's a quote, but going by your username, I take it you're Chellamuthu Ramasubramanian? --AmaryllisGardener talk 13:29, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Dear Amaryllis

Im his secretary writing a wikipedia article on the founder of our organisation Mr. Chellamuthu Ramasubramanian. If you have read the article can you please suggest some changes which might help me with the submission. This is my first time writing an article on wikipedia.

Bests Selva

@Dr.C.Ramasubramanian: Like I said above, "At Wikipedia we want to keep our articles neutral in tone. Stating the facts without our personal opinions included. Basically just don't have things like "Samaritan in the field of Mental Health" and "rich experience" in the article." Since you're his secretary, I think it would be best to request someone else create the article at Wikipedia:Requested_articles/Biography/By_profession#Psychologists. --AmaryllisGardener talk 13:45, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

tThanks for your suggestions. I shall get somebody to do it so it sounds not very personal. Also is okie to use quotes like this without reference My father said, “ One of the best ways to find higher meaning in the work you do is to keep questioning to become aware of the impact of your work has on the world around you. And don’t let fear get in the way of helping out where you can”.

Thanks Selva (Dr.C.Ramasubramanian (talk) 13:50, 26 June 2014 (UTC)).

Draft:Dedlen

Hey AmaryllisGardener, I was wondering if you would do me a favor. I've given User:Dedlen advice on an article draft which he created about himself (see here). The author asked me if I could review the article now that it's been submitted at AfC, but I would feel a little weird reviewing it now. Could you review it for me? :) The draft is located at Draft:Dedlen. ~ Anastasia (talk) 21:19, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

thank you! That was so fast! I'll work on the draft some more and resubmit it. Will it go back to AmaryllisGardener talk automatically? Dedlen (talk) 04:04, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
@Dedlen: It can be reviewed by any AfC reviewer once you submit it again, but it could be me. --AmaryllisGardener talk 04:22, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
ok. Thank you! I've made changes to the phrases you suggested I modify. Could you take a look and let me know if I understood and it is now more appropriate? Dedlen (talk) 04:33, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
I also have added a couple more independent journal citations as well. Please let me know what you think now? Thank you again. Dedlen (talk) 18:24, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

Malestrom

Lets just agree to disagree, Malestom is going away. Frozen has NOTHING to do with Norway or Norwegian culture. As someone with ancestral background from that area I actually find the whole replacement of the culture with make-believe insulting. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.59.52.87 (talk) 19:08, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

Guess what, I don't like the replacement of Maelstrom either. Wikipedia is just not the place for people's personal opinions. I rv edits that have POV problems regardless of whether I agree with them or not. Toilet paper orientation

Greetings.I removed the article simply because it is utterly and completely useless. One could create an article just about anything that has no encyclopedic relevance, and such an article does not in any way belong in Wikipedia. I don't feel it's necessary to give any explanation regarding this edit and I am baffled that this article has survived for so long. No offense intended, I just express my and I believe everyone else's' opinion regarding the subject. :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yavorpenchev (talkcontribs) 13:51, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

@Yavorpenchev: Thanks for your explanation. But blanking is still inappropriate. Instead it can be listed at AfD if you still feel that it should be deleted. --AmaryllisGardener talk 13:55, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

I understand and apologize for the apparent rudeness. I blanked the article simply because it appears to carry no scientific or encyclopedic value, but rather consists of vague arguments and speculation. I will ask you to delete the article or otherwise allow me to remove its content. P.S. I don't know how to add my signature so I'll just leave it like it is. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yavorpenchev (talkcontribs) 14:03, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

@Yavorpenchev: I can't delete an article, because I'm not an administrator, even if I could, I wouldn't. It has to be listed at WP:AfD first. Steve Horelick article -- resubmission question

Amaryllis,

Hello, thank you for reviewing my article on Steve Horelick for Wikipedia -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Steve_Horelick . I'm sorry the submission was declined on 10/29. According to the comments box, it says, "This submission's references do not adequately evidence the subject's notability—see the guidelines on the notability of people and the golden rule. Please improve the submission's referencing, so that the information is verifiable, and there is clear evidence of why the subject is notable and worthy of inclusion in an encyclopedia. What you can do: Add citations (see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners) to secondary reliable sources that are entirely independent of the subject."

I have two citations there in the Wiki article. Can you let me know how many more I need to add to ensure that it passes muster the next time around?

Please let me know, thank you for your time!

Best, Mrdavidsam (talk) 20:38, 10 November 2014 (UTC)David Weiss david@dwords.com

@Mrdavidsam: I'd add a few more before resubmitting, make sure it passes WP:GNG and WP:BLP. Good luck! :) --AmaryllisGardener talk 20:42, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Message from EuroCarGT

I apparently have your userpage watchlist from Twinkle. Anyways, I just seen you add User:AmaryllisGardener/Stress on top of your userpage with the text Discouraged, stressed, and depressed about editing, you also went to Mr. S user talk stating about your recent interactions at RFA. You stated "badgering" and "lambasting" to be the issue. If this is the issue, I don't think you should feel stressed out and discouraged from this, remember we all got our own opinions, not everyone will have the same opinion. Having voted at many RFA's and being commented on for being 'false' or any other word, I just deal with it and let it go. The more and more you get frustrated at something, the more it will add pressure on you. My advice for today is to go outside and take a walk to your public library, borrow a book, sit down and read or something of that sort. Don't feel discouraged because some user talks crap about you, unless you feel like you did something completely wrong then you should feel that way. When ever you have a bad day, forget the moment and just look ahead. Have a cup of tea. Best and kind regards, --///EuroCarGT 22:07, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for the encouragement, Euro. I'll follow your advice. :) Regards, --AmaryllisGardener talk 22:09, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

RfA

Hi. Don't expect RfA to change any time soon - at least not its format. WP:RFA2011 proved that, and although it might be nearly 4 years ago, 99% of the vast amount of work and research that was done there is still wholly relevant today. If that project didn't achieve its ultimate goal to bring about physical change, it nevertheless sent a clear message to the voters to clean up their act and apart from some obvious silliness on a current RfA, it's a far less unpleasant place today than it was a few years ago when it was habitually full of lies, innuendo, sarcasm, incivility, toxic personal attacks, blatant trolling, and misplaced humour. Just take a look at my RfA if you need convincing. I would say that today's RfAs by comparison are almost a walk in the park whether they are successful or not, and that's the new message that we need to be sending to the community in the hope that we will get more candidates of the right calibre. It all depends on the voters. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 00:06, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello AmaryllisGardener. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).

Yeah, 'bout those crats...

I read you quick comment on the most recent RFA's talk page, and I agree; I haven't seen one of those in a while, and I know a few administrators that I would nominate myself. However, it seems that running for bureaucrat is a "lost art"; I guess most administrators either have no interest, or don't feel confident enough to take up the bureaucratic role. (Any administrator talk page watchers feel free to call me out on this.) Also, at this point, with RFA running at the slow pace that it is right now, I think that more of them should be promoted to bureaucrat, given that in my mind, a bureaucrat should have a good idea of what makes an "administrator", given that they have the final call to discuss amongst themselves RFAs where consensus is not clear. I feel that bureaucrats may be able to assist with working on possible amendments/rewrites of the RFA process. So ... I'm up for helping out with this. Steel1943 (talk) 02:58, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

@Steel1943: Yeah, Dennis' reply to my comment was sort of negative. Kind of a worst-case scenario. There aren't any bureaucrats currently that I wouldn't trust for the job of RfA clerk, and I know several admins that would be fit for cratship. About Dennis' concern of "what if they make a decision that's highly controversial, then there wouldn't be a way of challenging it" Crats shouldn't and won't rule the wiki. They should keep each other in check. --AmaryllisGardener talk 03:19, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
Agreed on your statement; I was, more or less, stating that if a bureaucrat is elected, then consensus should, in theory, agree that their thoughts would have some bearing as a bureaucrat in administrative decisions, but not the ultimate decision. (I actually didn't read the rest of the talk page discussion; the only line I read was your response, so I have no idea what's going on there. :) ) Steel1943 (talk) 03:24, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

Since you took it upon yourself...

to accuse me of personal attacks on a recent talk page for an RfA, I'd really like you to explain just where the personal attack was. I made a comment about the overall process, not a person. I'm unclear if you think anyone who disagrees with you is making a personal attack or what. In any case, if you feel as though I attacked you, I apologize, as I don't even know who you are nor do I recall any posting of yours that I've responded to. I do not believe that a comment regarding the process (in this case, refraining from haranguing an "oppose" voter as to the reasons he/she cast their vote the way they did) is a personal attack in any way. I'm truly sorry if you disagree with that. Vertium When all is said and done 17:07, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

@Vertium: You misunderstood me. "People can express their opinion when and how they want", is incorrect, because the WP:NPA limits your free speech. In America we have true free speech. You can't get arrested because you accused someone of something, or because you called someone a name (or at least you aren't supposed to get arrested). Here, on WP, you can get blocked for personal attacks (calling someone names, etc.), so people can't express their opinion when and how they want. I never accused you of personally attacking anyone. --AmaryllisGardener talk 18:31, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the note back, I appreciate, and I did misunderstand your post. I take your point, and hadn't intended that the statement was to be taken out of the context of WP's guidelines. As an American, we don't really have completely true free speech, because if you call them a name and it's not true, you can be tried civilly, though probably not criminally. Thanks again, and happy editing. Vertium When all is said and done 20:07, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

Comments on my editing

You have accused me of unconstructive editing and vandalism of the Kishwaukee River entry in Wikipedia. I found that entry to be VERY informative and well written. I labeled all of my edits as "minor", as they consisted of actions such as spelling corrections, correcting the name of a government agency, and the insertion of commas to enhance readability. I made no changes in the substance of the text. Indeed, my edits did NOT fit the Wikipedia definition of "vandalism" found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Vandalism.

I am a Ph.D. scientist who has published books and many articles, including on ecology, and I do not believe my edits were contrary to good scientific writing practice.
