Your Welcome
Hello Amartyabag
Thanx for your welcome. I am here to stay & will look forward to sincerely contributing to Wikipedia with all the help from the likes of old members like you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kolkatan (talk • contribs) 07:15, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
I have learned to insert pics and do minor editing here & there, but opening new articles seems confusing to me with so many signs, referance numbers ,codes and all. But I'm trying to understand the process. BTW, how did you know that I have expertise in those categories??? Kolkatan (talk) 09:49, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

Some tips to help you out!
Hi Amartyabag, I thought I'd drop a few notes on your talk page with some help on writing articles :o)
First of all, it may be best for you to do a bit of reading, starting with the Wikipedia manual of style, which will give you a lot of information about how Wikipedia prefers its articles to be written. It's not as hard to follow as it might look; quite a bit of the information there probably won't be vital for you at first.
Second, I recommend you make a user sandbox - which is just an area you can use to practise in, and to make notes in, and to get things ready in. If you click this red link: user:Amartyabag/Sandbox, that will let you create that page (it gives you an edit window to start work in). Anything, anywhere, on the help and information pages which gives you an example, try it out in your sandbox until you're familiar with it.
For your article, the next thing you want to do is start collecting as much information as you can about it. Google searches (particularly in Books and Scholar) will be your best friend for this! Once you've found the information, the next most important thing is to start writing up each fact in your own words (very important, this), and make a note at the same time of exactly where that information came from. Build in the references as you go along; I'm going to copy in, down below this, a whole heap of help on doing references, which was produced by one of our best teachers (Chzz).
Here's another place that you'll find incredibly useful - citation templates which you can copy and paste into your sandbox, between <ref></ref> tags; you just fill in the blanks from your sources into the template, and you'll end up with nicely formatted inline citations :o) It all helps. Remember to add a references section to your sandbox (make a new line, and put ==References== on it, and type {{reflist}} on the next line, so that you can see how your citations look as you do them. Remember to save your page often! You don't want to lose your work.
Hopefully this will give you a good start and make life easier for you.
One last thing to keep as a motto: "It's better to write one good, well-referenced, nicely-presented article than it is to create fifty unreferenced one-line stubs!" Pesky (talk …stalk!) 12:49, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
How references work
Simple references
These require two parts;
- a)
Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref> He likes tea. <ref> [http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com Tea website] </ref>
- b) A section called "References" with the special code "{{reflist}}";
== References == {{reflist}}
(an existing article is likely to already have one of these sections)
To see the result of that, please look at user:chzz/demo/simpleref. Edit it, and check the code; perhaps make a test page of your own, such as user:Amartyabag/reftest and try it out.
Named references
Chzz was born in 1837. <ref name=MyBook> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref> Chzz lives in Footown.<ref name=MyBook/>
Note that the second usage has a / (and no closing ref tag). This needs a reference section as above; please see user:chzz/demo/namedref to see the result.
Citation templates
You can put anything you like between <ref> and </ref>, but using citation templates makes for a neat, consistent look;
Chzz has 37 Olympic medals. <ref> {{Citation | last = Smith | first = John | title = Olympic medal winners of the 20th century | publication-date = 2001 | publisher = [[Cambridge University Press]] | page = 125 | isbn = 0-521-37169-4 }} </ref>
Please see user:chzz/demo/citeref to see the result.
For more help and tips on that subject, see user:chzz/help/refs.
Here's a little bit of magic which can save you an awful lot of time and effort!
You might want to consider using this tool - (tools:~dispenser/cgi-bin/webreflinks.py) - it makes your life a whole heap easier, by filling in complete citation templates for your links. All you do is install the script on Special:MyPage/common.js, or Special:MyPage/vector.js, or Special:MyPage/monobook.js, and then paste the bare url (without [...] brackets) between your <ref></ref> tabs, and you'll find a clickable link called Reflinks in your toolbox section of the page (probably in the left hand column). Then click that tool. It does all the rest of the work (provided that you remember to save the page!) It doesn't work for everything (particularly often not for pdf documents), but for pretty much anything ending in "htm" or "html" (and with a title) it will do really, really well all by itself. For those it can't do by itself, it gives you a pull-down (or up) menu of templates to choose from, which you can then fill in manually. Often the problem is "No title found" - sometimes the title is obvious (especially if it's a pdf), but, if not, just open the page yourself and choose something appropriate if there's not already a clear title there. Happy editing! Pesky (talk …stalk!) 12:49, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

I hope they keep the article in FAR for a long time, we have to request that. I guess it would take us till end of January 2012. If we continue to do work all this time, even if slowly, the article should get much better.--Dwaipayan (talk) 03:33, 9 December 2011 (UTC)

Kolkata copyedit done
I would have finished it yesterday if not for the shutdown :-). Good luck with the featured-article review; the only issues I can see are (perhaps) too many city nicknames in the infobox and a few too many images in the article itself—an embarrassment of riches, in this case. Sister cities of Kolkata
There is no reliable sources for the sister cities. Long Beach has been mentioned in some sources, but the sister cities website for Long Beach itself does not list Kolkata. IMO we ned to delete that section. What do you think?--Dwaipayan (talk) 18:57, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

West Bengal and Kolkata
Heh, WB has slipped to 6th position in terms of NSDP. Not getting reliable list of state GDPs anywhere supported by government data, although IBEF probably has state GDPs mentioned in individual state's presentations (in dollar). IMO, West Bengal is in a better shape than Kolkata (prior to FARC, that is). And this time, we have to be cautious during referencing, and follow the MoS rules that SandyGeorgia showed us during copy-editing of Kolkata. Bye the way, that monsoon cloud over Nalban picture looks great. And the transport image is more representative of Kolkata than the earlier one. In the economy section, we used to have this image of a flower market. Do you know where is it? If possible, can you make an image rotation with the present image and the flower market image? Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:26, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Constituencies
Now, this area is totally messed up -- the parliamentary and assemcbly constituencies of Kolkata. This gazzette order has the list. I have started to build a paragraph in Civic administration of Kolkata. Assembly constituencies are located even more complicatedly, with Kolkata district having some ACs, and several Kolkata Municipal Corporation area actually belonging to assembly constituencies of South 24 Parganas. puro ghete gha
After we can build up a good paragraph in the daughter article, those sentences (if possible, in a summarised manner) need to be mentioned in Kolkata. --Dwaipayan (talk) 22:04, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
- Oh, really Kolkata Police area and KMC area are same now? Even after the recent redistriburion of areas, I thought Kolkata police area is larger than KMC area. --Dwaipayan (talk) 03:19, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
- The description constituencies in Civic administration of Kolkata done. Please have a read, and see if it is understandable. The sentence in Kolkata article also changed—used Kolkata district instead of city. However, if we go on to do a proper explanation of the constituencies in Kolkata article, it would take up a lot of space. What do you think?--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:01, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

Suranga DYK
Was reviewing your DYK nomination and had a problem in it. Isnt any tunnel called Surang in Hindi? Thats a general term. The article if it talks about specific tunnels in Karnataka should have a different name. What say? -Animeshkulkarni (talk) 09:12, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
- While I am aware that Surang or Suranga is a generic word for tunnel in Hindi, Bengali and may be some other Indian languages. But, as this is the English Wikipedia, I don't think someone will be searching for Suranga in English Wikipedia, rather they will search for "tunnel". The term "Suranga" to mean the specific water management structures in Karnataka has been used in the cited sources. Maximum we can add this line "Amartyabag TALK2ME 10:29, 16 February 2012 (UTC) " Please suggest your views.
- Umm.... although no one might search for the hindi word Surang here, i am also not sure if someone will search for Suranga to read about these Karanataki tunnels. The term Suranga refered to these tunnels is not a proper noun. Its still a common noun. Isnt it? Just like how Gharaonda is used as a proper noun when refered to the film and not as a common noun refering to Home. But....i dont even have any other suggestion for the title. So not sure what to do. But in the present case, the hook for the DYK and the intro in the article should be changed. The wording there "...that Surangas are horizontal tunnel like structures..." and "Suranga is a traditional water management system..." gives impression that it is a Proper noun. -Animeshkulkarni (talk) 15:12, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
- No, the name "Suranga" has been used as a proper noun in the context. Most of the sources use the term "suranga" to refer to the structures, rather than using an English alternative. As per WP:EN, if a subject "has not not yet received much attention in the English-speaking world, so that there are too few English sources to constitute an established usage ... [one should] follow the conventions of the language in which this entity is most often talked about". In the case herein, "Suranga" has not recieved much attention in the English speaking world, and the sources are very few. Most of the available sources (except 1), has used the term as a proper noun. We must take into the fact and use the term as known in the local language (most probably Kannada).Amartyabag TALK2ME 17:05, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

On West Bengal
Amartya, we need a quasi-long term improvement methodology for the article West Bengal. I attempted some data update already. Overall, our goal would be to update data wherever applicable, improve and properly format all the references; and attention to specific sections (IMO, in decreasing order of necessity—Culture, Education, History, and other sections thereafter).
In terms of focusing on sections, the section Culture needs immediate attention for summarizing, improvement of prose. Education also needs summarizing.
Do you want a working plan? How about going through the data-extensive sections first (Economy, Demographics, Transport, Government and politics), and make sure the data are up-to-date and have properly formatted citations? (We need to use d-m-y dating style). We do not need any time limit, if we are able to do the whole think in six months, I would be elated ! Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 19:37, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

DYK for Suranga
On 29 February 2012, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Suranga, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that surangas are horizontal, tunnel-like structures dug into laterite hill slopes to supply water in the Kasaragod district of Kerala and Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Suranga.You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Newspaper locations
Ok, it seems we have to decide our strategy for consistency on newspaper locations in Kolkata. We have following options:
1. Mention location for all newspapers. 2.We may use our common sense, and mention locations for only those that are ambiguous.
In either case, for internet version of pan-Indian newspapers that are published from multiple locations, we can use the name of the headquarters, or, just mention India. I think, mentioning headquarters would be better.
For non-Indian newspapers, we would use the name of headquarters as location.
I think, the safest is naming location for all newspapers (even Times of India, location being Mumbai, India) for the sake of consistency in this article. Although it may sound like doing unnecessary work for the sake of some rigid rule, the outcome would probably look more professional. It would take prolonged time, but can be done. What say?--Dwaipayan (talk) 00:02, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
- Jeez! I could not figure out how to request running that bot. (I am technologically quite behind most of the wikipedia editors!)
- Can you please try to activate it? Among Indian newspaper sites, it recognizes indiatimes and hindu. We have loads of Indiatimes, so it would be good to run that bot.
- Also, will make a declaration in the FARC that we are going to add location to all newspapers. I have added location to all book publishrs already. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:23, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
- Hmmm, that was easy. Just requesting on the talk page of the proprietor. --Dwaipayan (talk) 14:43, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
- Ok, the bot has done its job. I verified upto ref no. 200, and updated locations. Except for one Asian Age ref, all other newspaper and newsmag refs have location, upto ref 200. Could not find what is the headquarter of Asian Age.Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 21:01, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
- Hmmm, that was easy. Just requesting on the talk page of the proprietor. --Dwaipayan (talk) 14:43, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
Final touches (hopefully)
As discussed in FARC, I proposed to keep the name of the country in case of ambiguity or in case the name of the city is relatively lesser known, irrespective of what the name of the publication suggests. So, for India Today, although it is expected that readers would understand that the publisher location is in India, still we should keep India following Noida for the sake of consistency. Perhaps the same is true for Tribune, "Chandigarh, India" should be used instead of "Chandigarh" alone. New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata are more well known names, considering a global audience.
For that book reference (Calcutta mosaic), we can use the "{{rp|page}} template. --Dwaipayan (talk) 08:39, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject India Tag & Assess 2012 Contest
Hello friends, we are a number of editors from WikiProject India have got together to assess the many thousands of articles under the stewardship of the project, and we'd love to have you, a fellow member, join us. These articles require assessment, that is, the addition of a WikiProject template to the talk page of an article, assessing it for quality and importance and adding a few extra parameters to it.
As of March 11, 2012, 07:00 UTC, WikiProject India has 95,998 articles under its stewardship. Of these 13,980 articles are completely unassessed (both for class and importance) and another 42,415 articles are unassessed for importance only. Accordingly, a Tag & Assess 2012 drive-cum-contest has begun from March 01, 2012 to last till May 31, 2012.
If you are new to assessment, you can learn the minimum about how to evaluate from Part One of the Assessment Guide. Part Two of the Guide will help you learn to employ the full functionality of the talk page template, should you choose to do so.
You can sign up on the Tag & Assess page. There are a number of awards to be given in recognition of your efforts. Come & join us to take part in this exciting new venture. You'll learn more about India in this way.

I see you tagging the WikiProject India banner on talk pages... Alot of articles. Good job because it is needed, especially for India articles. FYI... WikiProject Biography is the first banner on talk pages, WP India should come after biography. After biography, any order is fine. I personally like alphabetical, others go by order of importance and others don't have a preference. All the gory details are at Wikipedia:Talk page layout. Bgwhite (talk) 05:53, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Prince of Wales Institute Of Engineering & Technology requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.
If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. WWGB (talk) 11:15, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Institute of Life Sciences
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Institute of Life Sciences requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Jethro B 06:09, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Amartyabag, I have added a few images of Rajdhani,Shatabdi,Janshatabdi on their respective pages. There is another used Abhishek191288 who 'thinks' that the images are not relevant to the page. I strongly disagree with him & have started a discussion on the respective article's talk pages. Would request you to view the images & add your comments on the talk page if you can. page deletion
Hi Amartya,
Wikipedia defines encyclopedia - An encyclopedia (also spelled encyclopaedia or encyclopædia)[1] is a type of reference work – a compendium holding a summary of information from either all branches of knowledge or a particular branch of knowledge.
Since Wikipedia doesn't focus on any specific branch. Which means it can contain every possible topic /info that is known today. Instead of deleting I think we should keep it live and ask for it to be improved if it looks like a guideline / handbook. Please let me know your thoughts on this..
regards

Hi Amaratya
We have updated the Wikipedia page to make it more like an encyclopaedia content than a handbook per...Please can you check it and see if it fits the guidelines...If you still think it doesn't fit please let me know accordingly so that I can try and make necessary changes..Please Can postpone the deletion date by a few days.
thanks for your time regards

Could you please add a reason for the PROD at Jitsakul Family.
Please do not add the Wikify tag to articles. That tag has been depreciated. In AWB, in the bottom middle section, goto the Options tag. Uncheck "Auto tag"
Also you are using an older version of AWB. A new version can be found at here. The top link is always the latest version. Bgwhite (talk) 07:40, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

MICROMINE - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MICROMINE
Hi Amartyabag,
Why have you just gone and desecrated my work?
Why don't you try and fix the references? I'm clearly new to this.
This was not copy pasted from anywhere, it was written for Wikipedia.
There are no issues with the copyright.
Clearly the company is notable as they have offices in over 20 countries worldwide and their client list includes top name mining companies.
Subjective manner? Have you read some of the articles about politicians on here? Really come on, you can't be serious.
The references to self published articles are not improper, clearly not, these items were written before the Wikipedia page was written so they are just 'referring' to the content that is discussed in the article. Most of the references are also not from the MICROMINE website and the ones that are simply point to pages that further describe the information.
Thanks for your time, but don't bother unless you are actually going to help me get it right. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cconey (talk • contribs) 07:20, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

You took this to AfD but your rationale "do not meet WP:GNG" is not appropriate. Why do you think that doesn't meet the notability guidelines? §FreeRangeFrog 08:22, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

Please undelete Cashboard page
Cashboard is notable, as shown by the coverage here:
If it's "not notable", then how is this page still existing? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvest_(software) Both products are similar in size and press coverage.
--76.103.136.200 (talk) 22:50, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
- You should have objected during the discussion regarding this. I have seen the links, they might meet the significant coverage criteria but you need to find more Reliable Sources. You can still make a request for Deletion Review and follow the norm. Regarding Harvest (software), it has coverage by Wall Street Journal and NY Times, two Reliable Sources. Hey Amartya! I'm a WP:CLEANSTART of Yasht101 (remember me?). I was browsing somewhere and came across your name so went on to see your work. It looked pretty good perhaps can you create the subpage to get an overview of your editing. I may consider nominating you. Cheers! TheSpecialUser TSU 14:59, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks! I haven't yet evaluated your work so not really planned to nominate you. Overall you looked good so thought of leaving that note :) Bhubaneswar..oh! Its one of those articles which can be developed and is in its worst form at present. I've schools starting from tomorrow and I'll be hardly getting time of half hour per day for Wikipedia so I guess I won't be much active for any collaboration or something. I recently overhauled Kerala after massive 160+ edits. I don't at all plan to work on any article, however, it means something to you so undoubtedly I'll be working on it from tomorrow; we can at least get it to B-class, can't we? I wish you all the best with your life. Cheers!
