Invitation to WikiAPA Edit-a-thon: "We Are Here" to Stay edit

I hope that you are doing well and having a great week. I saw that you had attended the 2019 edit-a-thon at Honolulu Museum of Art and wanted to share details about a Smithsonian Wikipedia edit-a-thon we will be hosting in Honolulu this month. You can find details below:

We would like to invite you to attend our in-person event, WikiAPA Edit-a-thon: "We Are Here" to Stay on October 26 from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM HST, which is hosted by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center (APAC), The Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative.

"We Are Here" to Stay’s purpose is to ensure pivotal Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders figures are represented on Wikipedia and Wikidata. Specifically, the event focuses on the people from the newly published anthology, We Are Here: 30 Inspiring Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Who Shaped the United States.

As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many who are looking to learn about art, history, and science. However, less than 19% of Wikipedia biographies in English represent women, and there are considerable gaps on Wikipedia related to Asian American and Pacific Islander history as well as topics about nonbinary and transgender people.

To fill the gap, this event encourages collaboration amongst cultural heritage professionals and Wikipedians to contribute their knowledge and expertise. During this event, attendees of all wiki experience levels are welcome and will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related to the We Are Here anthology. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own laptop for the event.

Please visit our Eventbrite page to register for this event. Because this is an in-person event, spots are limited so please register as soon as possible. You can find more information about the event by visiting our Wikipedia Project Page. If you have any questions or concerns about the event please contact the Wikimedia Coordinator, Mia Cariello, at cariellom@si.edu. CarCai (talk) 19:37, 17 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
