License tagging for Image:Alien Arena 2007.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Alien Arena 2007.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 17:06, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

More image problems edit

I've gone ahead and nominated a bunch of the images you uploaded for deletion. You can see it here. Please read Our nonfree content policy before uploading further images. Cheers, WilyD 21:59, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

And I will disupute this. Per your own guidelines -

Some copyrighted images may be used on Wikipedia, providing they meet both the legal criteria for fair use, and Wikipedia's own guidelines for non-free content. Copyrighted images that reasonably can be replaced by free/libre images are not suitable for Wikipedia.

Cover art: Cover art from various items, for identification only in the context of critical commentary of that item (not for identification without critical commentary). Team and corporate logos: For identification. See Wikipedia:Logos. Stamps and currency: For identification of the stamp or currency, not its subject. Other promotional material: Posters, programs, billboards, ads. For critical commentary. Film and television screen shots: For critical commentary and discussion of the cinema and television. Screenshots from software products: For critical commentary.

  • Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria Criterion #3a requires minimal use to be compliant. A gallery of unfree images is never considered fair use. Let me be unequivical: The rules on this issue are set and non-negiotable as they're dictated by American Law (where our servers are located). On the issue of galleries of unfree images they're unambigious, they're never permitted. Placing them on pages puts the Wikimedia Foundation in a position where it's exposed to legal liability and is not permitted and will not be tolerated. WilyD 16:12, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

These images were released to the public domain by COR Entertainment. How exactly are they "unfree"?

If you work for COR and are in a position to freely license them, email permissions-en@wikimedia.org from a work address with an explicit licensing statement. Otherwise, there's no evidence they're freely licensed. Our own page on CodeRED: Alien Arena claims the games' content is copyrighted, and my perusal of COR's website suggests the same. WilyD 16:22, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Mail has been sent and website has been updated to confirm that these screenshots are indeed public domain.

Hmm, email doesn't seem to be in the OTRS queue, but the website notice should serve; I'll adjust the images, withdraw the deletion nomination and keep an eye on the OTRS queue. Cheers, WilyD 17:25, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well anyways, I withdrew the nom and tagged the images better, restored the gallery. Email doesn't seem to have arrived at OTRS, unless someone's already processed it - dunno. I'll keep an eye out anyhow. WilyD 17:39, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I see it now. WilyD 17:44, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sorry if I came off a little heavy-handed eh? Copyright violations are one of our two big areas of vulnerability so we need to treat apparent ones very seriously if we want to avoid being sued into oblivion. Let me know if there's anyway I can help with outstanding issues. WilyD 18:02, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Understood, and thanks.

Non-free use disputed for File:Alien_Arena_2009_4.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Alien_Arena_2009_4.jpg. Unfortunately, I think that you have not provided a proper rationale for using this image under "fair use". Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page. Note that the image description page must include the exact name or a link to each article the image is used in and a separate rationale for each one. (If a link is used, automated processes may improperly add the related tag to the image. Please change the fair use template to refer to the exact name, if you see this warning.)

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted after seven days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MER-C 07:59, 26 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image File:Alien Arena 2009 2.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Alien Arena 2009 2.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 07:39, 9 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for File:Deathray1.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Deathray1.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:00, 23 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Image permission edit

If the image has been released into the public domain, please provide evidence of this. All I found was that the code was released under a free license (but not public domain) and that the data was not released under any free license. Reach Out to the Truth 04:53, 18 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

If you visit http://red.planetarena.org/media.html you will clearly see that the image, and all others on that page were released into public domain. The license you refer to speaks of the game data itself, not screenshots of the game. The makers of the game made it very clear that those screenshots are public domain. Alienrace (talk) 05:01, 18 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ah, okay. I see it now. The screenshots are licensed differently than the code and the data. Minecraft does the same thing, so I get it. Red text though, that's the kind of stuff I ignore. :/ Oh well, I'll go tag the images appropriately now so that they don't get deleted. I ask that you don't completely change the image though, as I can see you had previously done with that image. Different images should be uploaded under a different filename. Reach Out to the Truth 05:09, 18 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I don't have time to go through the rest. If you could do this to the rest of the images, that should save them from deletion. Reach Out to the Truth 05:20, 18 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

CodeRED: Alien Arena edit

Hi!

I created Commons:Category:CodeRED: Alien Arena. Just upload the screenshots to Commons with a link to the source and add {{licensereview}}. Then an admin should check by and review the file.

That should do the trick :-) --MGA73 (talk) 13:02, 31 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Screenshots from CodeRED: Alien Arena edit

This is just a notice in case someone thinks "Oh this user has uploaded a lot of copyvios".

There have for a long, long time been a text on the official website (http://red.planetarena.org/media.html#tag1) saying "Alien Arena Screenshots released into Public Domain". Sadly it is easy to miss so there have been a lot of disputes about the files.

We also had a permission in otrs saying that all screenshots from http://red.planetarena.org is PD but since the files was not reviewed right after upload it is sometimes hard to verify that the files really was on http://red.planetarena.org.

The files that was not deleted on March 12, 2012 are now fixed and moved to Commons but I'm sure that all of the files Alienrace uploaded was ok and could have been saved. --MGA73 (talk) 10:22, 13 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
