Linking to Flash-requiring site and Alfakim/Albotim edit

This is a continuation of an archived discussion. See User talk:Alfakim/Archive2#Linking to Flash-requiring site and Alfakim/Albotim

Thanks for taking this up Armedblowfish it's really appreciated. I don't get it though... should I now continue to linkspam the official site? -- Alfakim -- talk 13:05, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

No problem. I guess so, though "linkspam" is not really an accurate term. I looked at WP:EL, the style guide Naconkantari cited. Apparently, it is more acceptable to link to plain HTML pages that then link to rich media, so I propose switching to the front page (which offers links to high and low bandwidth version, and a download of Flash). I also suggest directly citing WP:EL and why this is acceptable in the comment. You may also consider a brief explanation in your edit summary. (Note: I also looked for a non-Flash mirror, but could not find one.):
 == External links ==
* [http://www.stargatesg1.com/ Official Stargate SG-1 site]. MGM. Visited June 8,
2006. Most of site requires [[Flash]]. <!-- There is a synopsis of the episode in there, but it cannot
be linked to directly to our knowledge. Though the URL above contains links to the rest of the site
(which is Flash), it itself is not Flash, in accordance with WP:EL. Even if it were, it is acceptable
because it is a) the official Stargate site and b) being used as a reference. -->

About vandalizing... edit

I find this whole situation amusing. I haven't been vandalizing Wikipedia, and I didn't leave a message "I am not vandalizing! Stop talking to me!" on whatever that page is. I don't understand why my IP address (I assume that that's my computer, so correct me if I'm wrong) is leaving vandalism. I've never edited any of those pages I keep getting scolded about! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.226.18.30 (talkcontribs) 16:24 15 June 2006 (UTC)

your edit to DNA Resequencer edit

Hi, I just reverted the edit you made to DNA Resequencer. Although your edit agruably upgraded the text, It Deleted 3 refs, detsoyed about 20 cites, and disolved sevral pieces of key info. I like what you added and how yo restructured the intro to the article, however it messed up alot of other things so I reverted. Later I will try to incoperate your changes to the text without damaging the refs. Tobyk777 18:04, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

S .. took me ages to do all that work. Could you re-revert to the version I did? and then sort out the refs from there? I thought the work i did on that intro was pretty crucial, especially if you're looking for FA. --Alfakim-- talk 23:04, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
I liked the work you did. Tonight, I have some time. I will try to re incorperate it. Just wait 6 hours from when i'm posting it. I appericiate all the work you did. I will try to make it perfect. Tobyk777 00:45, 24 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
I just spent more than an hour. The text is perfect, and all the cites are in the right places, however, the refs are really screwed up. Because of it alot of the text is invisible. I know it has something to do with the ref tags but I can't figure out what. Tobyk777 03:26, 24 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Take a look now edit

I have incorperated my great refs with your text. With the help of Tango and Morph, it looks perfect. Is there anything else that you think could be improved. Tobyk777 23:24, 24 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

The article needs copyediting heavily, it is riddled with spelling and grammatical mistakes :S. Also, your new leadin has introduced elements I tried to remove, such as those going into too much detail or sounding OR, or most importantly being in-universe. I would appreciate it if you could revert as significantly as possible to the version I wrote which removed 99% of what FA guys would object to. for isntance, your descriptions of various events (e.g. anubis and the goauld) in the leadin are far too detailed and in-universe. --Alfakim-- talk 01:26, 25 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
I copied all of your text into the curent version. I just re-reffed it, and re-added info you deleted. I didn't revert because your changes were bad, I reverted because they destroyed the refs and deleted info. The text in your version was the best the text ever was, (except for the info you deleted) If you could copyedit it without destoying refs and deleting info it would be great. Tobyk777 02:53, 25 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
If you take a look here and here the text in the current version is almost identical to your text, I tried to preserve as much as possible. It is reverted to the version you wrote, just better refed. (Also, the show never mentioned anything about an army of hokotaurs so i took that out) Your changes were great, I just reffed them. Tobyk777 02:59, 25 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I removed some of your info because of reasons like:

  • Too much detail for a lead in section
  • Sounded in-universe
  • Repeated elsewhere in teh article

Remember that a leadin is meant to be a brief summary/introduction to an article that doesn't go into detail, and shouldnt take up more than 1 screen. --Alfakim-- talk 14:18, 25 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Template Table edit

There is something I want to do, but I can't get an answer about how to do it on Wikipedia/MediaWiki sites. I hope you can help: This is best described by example. Consider I have a template named 'house' and it has the fields 'address', 'rooms', 'baths', 'price'. Now, I know how to make that template and use it on each page about a house. But, I want to show the template values of every page in one comparison table, like:

Address Rooms Baths Price
123 St. 3 1.5 $150k
44 Powderhorn Ave. 2 2 $120k
1143 S. Windermere 4 2.5 $200k

Is that possible? I made an extension that does it, but if you update a template value, you have to open/save the page with the comparison table again to update the values. --Kainaw (talk) 17:11, 4 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

There is no way to do this. The best you can get is a list of all the pages which the template is used on, at Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:House.--Alfakim-- talk 00:10, 5 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
OK. I made an extension to do it. Now I can avoid having to update every table of info on my wiki. Just update the template and all the related tables are updated (when the cache clears). --Kainaw (talk) 18:41, 10 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

stargate timeline edit

Just wanted to say that I think you (and all supporters) did a great job on the timeline page (which I have only just found today). I have one little hitch though and frankly, I am a little afraid of trying to make a note directly on the page for fear of somehow managing to accidently erase the whole thing, so I will use this (safer) route instead.

You note that Dr Weir and the Atlantis research team are examining the ruins of the Antarctic base in July 2004(Rising and prelude to it). Presumably, this would also be when Maj Sheppard flies Gen O'Neill to the site and their little mishap with the drone. It is clearly daytime during this episode yet it should be completely dark in Antarctica in July and NO ONE flies in Antarctica in the winter (just ask Dr Jerri Neilsen - the doctor who discovered she had cancer while stationed at A-S South Pole Station during the winter of 1999! the med drop they did in July for her was unprecedented at the time).

Frankly, I have also wondered exactly what it is that Maj Sheppard would have been doing in Antarctica for eleven months (short of consuming already very limitted resources) seeing as though a)there are no military bases in Antarctica and b)he would only be useful as a helicopter pilot for 4 or 5 months out of the year?? But, that is neither here nor there.

thanks for your time!!!

Umm... thanks! Youve pointed out another plothole - dont worry about it. Anyway yes, glad you liked the page. --Alfakim-- talk 20:00, 10 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Quantum Templating edit

I'm trying to get some help on a template I was designing. The goal was the condense a few related templates whose only difference is the inclusion or removal of a few fields. I thought it would be simple enough to add some code that would only include the static parts if the corresponding parameter existed.

Unfortunately, the static part in question is a row in a table. As such, it includes a pipe charater. Template code does not like pipe characters where it expects a parameter, and predictably does not do what I want it to do. Is there any way around this, or should I abandon my quest? --Khaim 16:06, 21 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

There are ways around it. Either:
  1. See {{!}}
  2. Use HTML table markup. So inside your template...
{{sdfdsf|dfsdf|sdfsdf|<tr><td align="center">row cell 1</td><td blah>row cell 2</td></tr>|sdfsd|sdfsd}}
--Alfakim-- talk 16:12, 21 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! {{!}} worked like a charm.

Template:cite visual and Stargate episode citations edit

Hey, I think {{cite visual}} might actually be better for citing Stargate episodes than {{cite episode}}, because it has more bibliographic information. However, I do think it could use some more variables to make it appropriate for Stargate episodes. For example, a series variable. Also, I am not sure whether MGM would be the "distributor" or "producer", or whether the distributor would be MGM, or a television network / DVD publishing company. The "date" (release date) could also be either the original airdate, or the date the DVD came out. In addition, if the medium chosen is "tv", a "viewed on date" variable could be useful. Anyways, I would appreciate your opinions on what variables would need to be added, and how said variables should be used. Also when I'm done making changes at Template:Template sandbox/Template:Cite visual, I would appreciate it if you looked at my code to see if you catch any bugs that I didn't. (This is assuming you even think it's a good idea.)

The ultimate goal would be to create a list of citations for Stargate episodes, with the variables specific to TV/DVD left blank, so that editors who have seen the episodes can tweak the TV/DVD specific fields, and cite information they have verified with that reference. (If I were to add the citations to the Stargate episode articles, then not having seen most of them, I would have to put them in "Further viewing" sections, not "References" sections.)

Armedblowfish (talk|mail|contribs) 03:38, 28 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure I understand. What are you proposing? Cite visual can't replace cite episode because it doesn't cite the episode. Unless you're creating a new, Stargate-focussed or episode-focussed Cite visual? Then what happens to Cite episode? Deprecated? --Alfakim-- talk 18:44, 28 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
{{Cite visual}} is more generic than {{cite episode}} - an episode is a type of visual. I don't mean to create a new cite visual, merely to expand it by adding variables that you would want for an episode (like Stargate). Cite episode would still be there, but if I/we did a good job improving cite visual, perhaps people would gradually stop using it. Some of the things I like about cite visual are that it has more fields for the people involved (director, producer, crew, instead of just credits), it pays more attention to the actual source the editor used (medium - this is good to know for the same reason it's good to know what edition of a book was used), etc. Of course, it lacks some fields you might want for an episode (like a series field). I was wondering if you could give me some pointers on a template I made. It's like your Nowiki template, except it's for templates. Here's what it does:

Leaving this code when substituted:

  • <nowiki>{{</nowiki>[[Template:nowiki|nowiki]]<nowiki>}}</nowiki>

Here's how you use it:

  • Type {{subst:no wiki|TemplateName}} and replace "TemplateName" with the template of your choice.

Here's the page for it: {{no wiki}} (The template I'm talking about was used to make this.)
What do you think? Any suggestions? Take a look at my user page for examples of its use. Chris53516 16:32, 13 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi,

sorry to bother you, but your name was one of the few in the "adept template coder" listing linked from the help page. Could you have a look at the question I asked here?

Cheers, TeraBlight 19:37, 22 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the reply. I'll probably code it with single parameters for now and, once the stable MediaWiki release includes the StringFunctions parser functions, change it to a more elegant version then.
Much obliged, TeraBlight 18:51, 24 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Template help edit

Hi. I'm making a user page template, in the hope that it can be useful for users other than myself, and I'm currently testing it. Unfortunately I've hit a few snags which I can't fix. The template is User:Markdarb/Userpage001, and I'm testing it at User:Markdarb/Sandbox. On the left of the template are three user boxes. When calling the template I use the parameters 3 to 8 to control what's in the user boxes (3 title, 4 content, 5 title, 6 content, etc). However, it isn't working for all of the user boxes. In the first user box I'm trying to use Template:User en and Template:User fr-1, but it isn't working. In the second user box I have a list of contact details which isn't working either. In the last box I have some bulletpointed sub-user-pages. The last box works, but because some other parameters are being ignored it appears in the second user box instead. I hope I've explained everything clearly enough! Your help or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Markdarb 08:14, 25 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Your template looks overly complex from the start - not in a syntactic way, but just in its formulation. Why do you need to be making this template anyway? Please first tell me the purpose, and I'll suggest a better way of doing it. --Alfakim-- talk 14:45, 25 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
It's an experiment. I'm trying to make a good looking and simple-to-use template for user pages. The idea is that anyone can use the template so they can put in the content without having to worry about the difficulties, complications, and clutter in the coding of a complex design. An idea sort of along those lines was mentioned in June at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject User Page Help#Templates. I mentioned my idea there, and said I'd have a go at it.
One of the reasons the template is so complicated is that I'm using a table to make a gradient effect at the top and the bottom, although that's probably not what you were referring to.
One parameter is for the user name, the next is for the main content to appear on the page, and then each other parameter is for either the title or the content of a user box table.
The main problem I've had with the template is the content in some of the user box tables. It seems it mucks up if I actually try putting userboxes in it, and some other content.
A few other ideas which have now occured to me are to not have the template make three user boxes tables, but to have one parameter where people can put a user box if they so choose; and to have three templates instead of one (only the first one needing any parameters), so that the content can be put between the templates (like with userboxtop and userboxbottom). Anyway, I'll see what you have to say!
Hopefully I've given you a better of idea of what I'm doing. Thanks for your interest and help so far. Markdarb 20:46, 26 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

There are just simpler ways of doing this. First off, interesting as it is, scrap all the complex code, gradients etc (there are easier ways to do that anyway) - esp. as not everyone wants that gradient on their page (and it makes it impossible to customise the template's colour). You need to work up from SIMPLE. By the way, one of the parameters can simply be:

|userboxes=
{{user en}}
{{user de}}
{{user etc}}

Currently your template code is quite impenetrable due to all its complexity, but your problem is in the userboxes and the above is a better way of doing it. --Alfakim-- talk 02:16, 27 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Quads FC edit

Hi there was an entry left for Quads FC that was deleted on November 27th. Is there any chance that this article can be restored please? Quads FC is a small local football team but has quite a large cult following on the Wirral in England. It would be much appreciated by the management and supporters of Quads FC is this can be restored. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by BigDunk1982 (talkcontribs)

Templates and parameter for external link, problem with "=" in URL edit

Hi, I've recently upgraded the Template:Infobox Hospital and have run into a problem with a Website parameter that takes external website URL links. In essence the passed value is the full URL address with an optional (hopefully) short description to which is added "<space>Homepage" (to ensure meaningful text is always shown, rather than perhaps an inline link number: [1]), and then the complete extression is linked by enclosing in a single square bracket.

The relevent bit of the template coding will show unknown if the parameter is not defined, 'none' if the hospital has no web presence:

| {{#if: {{{Website|}}} |
{{#SWITCH: {{{Website|}}
  | N/A | n/a | None | none = ''None''
  | [{{{Website}}} Homepage]
}} | ''Unknown''}}
|-
Hence  http://www.hospital.com        -> markup [http://www.hospital.com Homepage]       -> outcomeHomepage
Whilst http://www.hospital.com Trust -> markup [http://www.hospital.com Trust Homepage] -> outcome Trust Homepage

Now for most pages this works as intended. Yet have a look at this version of Huddersfield Royal Infirmary where no website is displayed - the question is why not ?

The article defines the parameter thus:

| Website    = http://www.cht.nhs.uk/index.php?id=53 Trust

Mark up, in this talk page of: [http://www.cht.nhs.uk/index.php?id=53 Trust Homepage] gives: Trust Homepage - yet the template is showing nothing.

It is not the "/" or the "?" of the passed URL value, but the "=" which seems to be the critical problem. I presume the expression is somehow being evaluted as a conditional expression for the presence of "53" ? My question is therefore can one define the whole parameter value in some sort of literal expression, a little like enclosing in "quotes" in most programing languages ? David Ruben Talk 04:55, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

To your last question, no. The problem seems to be the spaces, actually. Before i get all complex, you might want to try the following:
|Website=http://www.cht.nhs.uk/index.php?id=53 Trust|
i.e. absolutely no spaces at the beginning, middle or end of the parameter, except preceding "Trust". Also watch out: parameter "Website" is different to parameter "website" (case). --Alfakim-- talk 16:23, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, this did not seem to work - see this removal spaces which fails to pass any parameter value apparently, yet removing the "=" seems to allow the parameter passing to occur (just not jumping correctly within the target website as the "=" is missing from the full URL). David Ruben Talk 19:27, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've found the mediawiki meta help-page re templates and it has a section M:Help:Template#Equals sign in parameter value which advises "When a parameter value contains an equals sign, the parameter name must be stated explicitly, otherwise the part of the parameter value before the equals sign is taken as the parameter name. " - however I am expicitly stating that the parameter name as being "Website", so I'm still none the wiser :-) David Ruben Talk 19:51, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Okay i looked at your code and found the problem. Ive suggested a solution, but im not sure whether it works. whether it does or not, that IS the problem i can guarantee - this may just be a fault in the software, if you cant find a working solution. --Alfakim-- talk 22:59, 4 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've fixed it.--Alfakim-- talk 00:40, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Wow - thanks. It works, but what a complex bit of coding :-) I'm not entirely sure I understand why this now works - I presume it is the assigning of the {{{Website}}} value to the internalised parameter 1 that then allows it to be explicity used later in the coding ? David Ruben Talk 03:35, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

It wasn't working originally because your URL had an equals, which was passed into a #switch default parameter (which cant contain an equals). So I changed the default to a "1", then used a switch on THAT to say "1=(what would have been the default before)". --Alfakim-- talk 17:49, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Not sure what you mean. It's a scaleable vector graphic, so you can scale it up as large as you want. Try this: [[Image:Stargate-title.svg|1000px]] Bryan 07:00, 12 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Parameter values through nested templates edit

Hi, i've found you on the Category:User template coder listing, and since i have a question concerning this subject i hope i can clear it with you :)

I'm testing a template A which uses a parameter M to specify a value Z. Inside this template A, I also use a parameter N through which I call repeatedly a template B. Inside this second template, I specify other parameters but also the same parameter M from the parent template. But I don't know how or if it's possible to "pass" the parameter M's value Z, in the parent template (A), to this nested template (B). Basically what i want is:

{{Template A
| parameter M = value Z
| parameter N = {{Template B|...|...|parameter M}}
}}

I'd want the parameter M, defined as Z in template A, to also carry the value Z inside template B. I'll also be calling template B oftenly and i can't have it becoming part of template's A content. Have i made myself clear? I hope I won't be a burden with this. Thanks in advance! Parutakupiu talk || contribs 19:46, 10 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

With odd things like this, the best solution is: you're overcomplicating things. There just IS a better way of doing what you're doing, and I know that before I even know what you're doing. However, your best bet is this:
Code for Template A:
blah blah
{{Template B|parameter M={{{parameter M}}}|{{{parameter N}}} }}
blah blah
i.e. stop calling the Template B from within your call to Template A, just nest Template B inside Template A and use parameter N for extras. But seriously, you're overcomplicating the issue. Tell me what you're trying to do. --Alfakim-- talk 20:49, 10 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Help with Hell.com Article edit

After through extensive searching on Google for Hell.com, I've stumbled upon something that you've written:

You replied on the talk page that, from my perspective, you wrote the whole thing. And because of that, I ask of your help in fixing the Hell.com article. I've visited the site itself, and I've also done a bit of reasearch myself in order to improve the article. If you don't mind at all, could you help me in the process? I'm having a tough time just trying the delete the unimportant sections and sentances and citing sources for much of the article. If not, I'd just like to ask for tips on how to improve it. Thanks for reading ^_^ DiamondDragon contact 08:13, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hell.com is a private parallel web - like an intranet, available only to its internal users - so it will be almost impossible to work out what it's really about. The entire article was written by me, yes, and it's ALL WP:OR and should really have been deleted years ago. I've spent hours trying to work out what Hell.com is, and this Wikipedia article is the best I was able to do. I'll keep helping if you have any leads though, because I'm determined to have a Wikipedia article that details exactly what it's about, so that all their stupid "pay us to get in" is worth nothing on the curiosity front. --Alfakim-- talk 15:39, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I see... and I see why it would be called original research; there's hardly any concrete information to identify the site. Like I stated above, I spent a large amount of time on research on Hell.com and I've found many sites that I would think be leads:

  • [3]- some time ago, Hell.com linked to no-such.com (another "parallel web"); contacted webowner, got access to no-such.com, found "a list of 70 artist sites from 19 countries around the world, including the United States, Europe, Australia and Japan." Kenneth says “This is a doorway to somewhere else. When people come to Hell they have no expectation of what’s there. What they do find is indefinable.”
  • [4]- It “is a private non-commercial project devoted to establishing an alternative reality.”
  • [5]- Ctrl + F look for Hell.com, "Hell.com has rarefied net.art by selecting its kings and queens, by creating an artistic pantheon. Yet when queried, Hell's representatives are very clear about their status as an arts organization: 'we don't do net.art. we don't do art.'"
  • [6]- Aspiring artists (web-designers, musicians, multi-media artists, etc.) could only be introduced to the inner sanctum when invited by a hell.com member, and further proceedings were shrouded in mystery and secrecy.
  • [7]- look for Hell.com, condensed info and some speculation.
  • [8]- an attempt to "hide"?

That's all the good ones I've got... are they even good enough to be "leads"? And just to note, I got all of this from pages 1 to 24 on searching Hell.com on Google by weeding out the news of its sale and other junk... and there's still more results. DiamondDragon contact 20:19, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

EDIT: And also, they stopped the making-you-pay routine; Hell.com's almost barren (except for index and e-mail pages, rest was replaced by Google search boxes). However, Aronson made a new website (to seemingly raise more money): [9] Funny, don't you think? And one more thing, Kenneth Aronson's portfolio is back with more pages... !Camp Type:

|-
! Ages:
| {{{put age range of campers here}}}
|-
! Location:
| {{{address}}}
|-
| colspan="2" style="font-size: smaller;" |
|}

into the template format like this:

{{Infobox Summer Camp
| name = insert camp name
| type = Public secondary
| ages = 9–12

As far as I understand, basically you just need to create the template. Create the page Template:Infobox Summer Camp by clicking that link. Put what you have there. You will then be able to, on any other page, use your "template format". --Alfakim-- talk 23:48, 16 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Help with template coding edit

I noticed you're quite good at Wikimarkup and templates. Could you help me with a couple welcoming templates I'm designing? The templates are {{Rswelcome}} and {{Rswelcomeip}}. The purpose of these templates is to welcome users who show an early interest in contributions to RuneScape articles. Basically, I already have the first parameter set to list the page, but I'd like to have the talk page and new section on talk page links automatically use the username of the person posting the template, rather than having to manually input your own username as a second parameter. If you could tell me how to fix this, it would be very helpful. Thanks, Pyrospirit Flames Fire 01:23, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

You mean this, right: You post this template on a user's page, and it automatically comes out with the message followed by your own name and talk page and post link?
