About Me

This user lives in the state of New Jersey. 

I have a particular interest in local area and New Jersey governmental topics. I have been gathering information about New Jersey and its municipalities, and I am looking to create a structure to load expanded information into pages for all of New Jersey's 566 municipalities, as well as consolidating other encyclopedic information about New Jersey.

A matter of good and evil We all have our pluses and minuses, both in real life and in Wikipedia. The problem is that most admins treat people on a binary basis -- you are either good or you are evil -- failing to recognize the positives in the people they deem evil and failing to see the negatives of the people they have judged good. The goal ought to be to seek ways to maximize the positive from each editor. Wikipedia:Blocking policy's mandate is that blocks are intended "to protect the project from harm, and reduce likely future problems", an approach that might have some success with vandals. The unfortunate reality is that blocks to experienced editors end up being punitive. They are applied in an "all your edits are bad" approach that fails to solve the issue at hand and only ends up creating more problems than they seek to solve. The real problem is finding admins who have the common sense needed to apply blocks that push people from areas where there are challenges to areas where they genuinely benefit this project.

Dumping poop Between Huggle and AWB -- and I use both -- we have turned so much of Wikipedia editing into a mindless game in which undoing the addition of the word "poop" counts as progress. Spending even a few minutes on Huggle, let alone an hour, it's clear that the vast majority of IP editors have no interest whatsoever in improving this encyclopedia. By allowing these vandalism reversions to count towards building a high score, we encourage our most productive editors to accomplish almost absolutely nothing, in terms of forward progress. The encyclopedia isn't better, it's just less bad. With even the flimsiest registration process, we could get rid of most of our vandals and free up huge amounts of time from people who really want to do work to help. Our top five editors have 1 million edits between them. If most of this was vandalism reverting and error correction that could be done by bots, we'd have freed up thousands of hours that could have been used productively. It's time we found some way to rank users by how much they've added to the encyclopedia, not how much "poop" they've removed.

Words of wisdom from our leader Let me make my point more clear: arguments about what we ought to [do] if someone really starts to abuse wikipedia with thousands and thousands of trivial articles do not prove that we ought to delete any and every article that's too trivial today. Put another way: if someone wants to write an article about their high school, we should relax and accomodate them, even if we wish they wouldn't do it. And that's true *even if* we should react differently if someone comes in and starts mass-adding articles on every high school in the world. Let me make this more concrete. Let's say I start writing an article about my high school, Randolph School, of Huntsville, Alabama. I could write a decent 2 page article about it, citing information that can easily be verified by anyone who visits their website. Then I think people should relax and accomodate [sic] me. It isn't hurting anything. It'd be a good article, I'm a good contributor, and so cutting me some slack is a very reasonable thing to do. That's true *even if* we'd react differently to a ton of one-liners mass-imported saying nothing more than "Randolph School is a private school in Huntsville, Alabama, US" and "Indian Springs is a private school in Birmingham, Alabama, US" and on and on and on, ad nauseum. The argument "what if someone did this particular thing 100,000 times" is not a valid argument against letting them do it a few times. --Jimbo (dated November 7, 2003[1])

Francesco Barbaro

Hi, I got your message about the F. Barbaro page. I think some where down the line there was a mixup with reverting since the page I brought up has a very good sourcing for francesco Barbaro that is cited. It is the link of Bucher that you can see for yourself.. I think the problem in the past may have been that people did not open the BARBARO.htm link once you get to the Bucher link...but if you do, you will see that all info is coming from Bucher and cited as such... it is a good source to use and with much more excellent facts about his writings and associations. Why the delete?

What's your problem?

What kind of external links are allowed then? Now you go and delete ALL of them? What the hell is the point of having a section for external links? I have a blog for a very specific group of people that I'm sure would be much appreciative of being able to find the information.

From Wikipedia guidelines... There are several things that should be considered when adding an external link.

   * Is the site content accessible to the reader?
   * Is the site content proper in the context of the article (useful, tasteful, informative, factual, etc.)?
   * Is the link functional and likely to remain functional?

Frank Prewitt page needs deletion

It appears the author of the "Frank Prewitt" page is no other than J. Frank Prewitt himself. He is an individual with at least a 15-year history of questionable behavior who has admitted on the stand during a federal trial of one of the criminal defendants that he committed illegal acts. He claims that he did not become a government informant under pressure, but instead acted as a good citizen. Little exists to substantiate that claim. In an extraordinary act of self-justification, he authored a poorly written book to exonerate himself and recast himself as the hero of the whole affair. As part of his page, the book jacket, both cover and promotional text, are included.

I have made attempts to correct his page to reflect reality, but he has it on a watch list and amends each correction to again promote himself.

His page exemplifies what is prohibited by Wikipedia, self-promotion, conflict of interest and advertising. After my attempts to delete it, in whole or part, you have reverted my deletions without reading or taking a moment to understand my reasons for having done so. I see nothing to be proud of. You are not preventing vandalism, but in fact are assisting anti-Wikipedia content policies. Request for speedy deletion

Despite your rationalization for keeping the Frank Prewitt page, you have ignored Wikipedia criteria. Notability alone does not merit inclusion. The page is question is wholly self-promotion, represents the clearest expression of conflict of interest, and contains intact advertising for the author's book with a picture of the cover and entire blurb from the back of the book. All three of these are valid reasons for speedy deletion of the entire page. It can't be "fixed." Its continued inclusion would be tantamount to allowing OJ Simpson to author a page based on his "If I Did It" book, complete with advertising materials, as your argument of "notability" could be easily made. This is not a hypothetical premise: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/If_I_Did_It

I did consider the accepted reasons for speedy deletion before I deleted it. Here's one: "Blatant advertising. Pages which exclusively promote some entity and which would need to be fundamentally rewritten to become encyclopedic. Note that simply having a company or product as its subject does not qualify an article for this criterion."

I would appreciate it if you would set aside your investment in your reversion and instead carefully consider the page in question objectively. If you set about the task of fixing it, how would you begin? What parts of it would be worthy of preservation? Why should anyone be allow to invent and perpetuate a myth about him or herself, and to control the content almost free of criticism? Use of rather non-standard formatting using the math functions, with inconsistent capitalization from a user with a very small number of edits is probably what did it. In RE to attempted compromise

I keep trying to tell you -- there *will be NO* newspaper articles that confirm the existence of two grandchildren. Doug Chandler is the one who lied to the "Times." Because he lied to the "Times" and he's the one who quoted the "Times" I propose that the "Times" obit not be allowed as a source at this time.

A birth certificate presents problems in terms of being sure that there is a direct connection to Robert Chandler, but the bigger problem is that there is no way for any other editor (including me) to verify its accuracy. I've seen other articles that list details, but none that provide any other details regarding grandchildren. So the question I put was, should the Frank Prewitt page be subject to speedy deletion, or is there some exception to Wikipedia guidelines that lets this poster not only author his own page, to ignore Wikipedia guidelines, to promote himself, to not only "exonerate" himself on the webpage for his past illegal behavior, but allows him to extensively advertise his self-published, third-rate book written with the same self-aggrandizing aims?

You can go to WP:BLPN to raise issues with inappropriate biographical content. Remember that notability has nothing to do with being a nice guy; I'm pretty sure that there's an Adolf Hitler article. Frank Prewitt is covered by reliable and verifiable sources. If there are specific issues they should be addressed by making changes that are clearly described and explained; Simply cutting away sourced material will likely be reverted. FLQ on Quebec lead

The FLQ involved likely less than 100 people in all, maybe less than 20. Putting at that place a false statement about 100,000 terrorists (out of 7 millions Quebecers) is misleading. Anyway Quebecers are used to Quebec-bashing and this paragraph is typical. Those misleading statements attempt to give FLQ more power than it actually had (souverainty gained in popularity because of charism of Rene Levesque, not because of the FLQ). I lived in Quebec all my life since 1956. While some people were killed by either FLQ or RCMP bombs in the 1963-1973 time period, they were minor incidents. The mobster war in the 1990s killed more people and much more persons were involved in the various gangs. As repeated in the discussion area, the FLQ part has nothing to do in that page.

The French also sent many donnes to Canada, many were killed but one man eustaush lambert became a powerful donne that protected the natives and became the first Canadian general.

The above statement is some noise. Eustache Lambert was born about 1617 and was a merchant. Calling him a general is misleading. And the donnés (given) were there to assist priests AFTER the early settlement, not BEFORE like implied in that paragraph. Likely inserted by someone who just never read about that topic.

The capitulation of New France occured in 1760 (Battle of Montreal), not 1759. And the battle of the plain occured after a siege of many months. The editor above is, not to put too fine a point on it, simply lying. Examination of the entry's discussion page will clearly show his assertions to be untrue, indeed in most cases to be the precise opposite of the truth. They are not seeking to improve standards, but merely repeating crude vandalisms to the entry which have been attempted on numerous occasions in the past and removed after debate. This can also be verified from the entry's discussion page. That is in proportion to the worldwide recognition of Champagne verses the lesser known sparkling wines. Re:Huggle message "Reverted unsourced content "

In Huggle, go to System -> Options -> Reverting, and you can add specific edit summaries that will appear under the list for "Revert this revision" (i.e., the arrow next to the big red sphere). You can also add them by going to your huggle.css page and changing the code per these variables. Note that I am using 0.7.12, but I don't think that the newer versions are much different. Yeah unfortunately I don't know if you can add custom "revert + warn" entries. You have to do them separately by adding entries to System -> Options -> Reverting and System -> Options -> Templates. Deletion of Mainstage article

Hello, Alansohn. You notified me about deleting the article currently at mainstage. I am fine with the deletion. I have no interest in the subject. From what I can tell, until I moved it in October 2006, "mainstage" was the article name for the content currently at main stage. I moved the article from "mainstage" to "main stage". During the move, the Wikipedia software made "mainstage" into a redirect to "main stage". Three years go by, and someone creates a non-encyclopedic article over the redirect at "mainstage". This article is put up for deletion, and I am mistakenly seen as the article's creator, again (I have made many moves and a huge number of redirects).

I wish that the creators of articles could be notified instead of me. Perhaps Wikipedia editors could be taught to see "moved blank1 to blank2: reasoning" and "#Redirect [[article name]]" in the edit summary at the bottom of the history page as the birth of a redirect, not an article. Although, I do not know if all editors even see the history page or if they are just told who the article creator is using an editing aid. I think one of them is called "balloons" or "pop-ups" or something similar. I have never used one, and I do not know how they work.

Please do not take any offense at my comments, as this was not my intention. I am not blaming you at all for this very minor inconvenience. You do not need to reply to this message, but you are welcome to reply if you want to. If you have the time, I am a little curious as to whether you were using an editing aid that told you I was the article creator because there might be a way to tweak it so that it works better. However, I am not implying that you did anything wrong if you were not using an editing aid. If you do reply, please use my talk page, or put a note on my talk page, so that I notice it.

After writing everything above, I realized that "mainstage" could simply be changed back to a redirect rather than going through the deletion process. This is how we handled non-controversial articles in the past (non-controversial in that a serious case could not be made for keeping the article by people who know what Wikipedia is for and what its standards are). If there is an objection, the article could be taken to Articles for Deletion to get a consensus on whether to keep it or not. Since there has not been a contribution to the article since April 2012, I doubt that there will be any objections. The IP addresses that created the article have not edited in years, either. @Kjkolb: - I think that I may have seen the article before, but once I re-read the previous incarnation of Mainstage I knew that there was something wrong. The article did not make the cut as encyclopedic but it seemed a clear disconnect with your background and experience as an editor. I looked through the edit history and scratched my head. Your explanation helps make sense of all of this. The same situation has happened to me numerous times in an effort to hive off content that was inappropriately added to or laid over an existing article. Unfortunately, this means that the editor who does the dirty work of cleaning up the mess also gets the blame in the event of a speedy deletion or XfD. I take no offense whatsoever at your remarks and I apologize for any confusion or inconvenience that my actions may have caused. Unincorporated communities?

An editor has decided to change the description from neighborhood to unincorporated communities for Newark, such as this. Doesn't seem right to me. What's your take or community's understanding on this? Thanks Djflem (talk) 23:46, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

There's a lot of weird stuff going on related to the distinction between unincorporated community and neighborhood. Every square inch of New Jersey is part of an incorporated municipality, be it a borough, city, town, township or village. There are other places that have their own identity and name but aren't incorporated on their own, and all of these are unincorporated municipalities. A neighborhood is usually part of city, especially in an area in which one neighborhood runs into another, as in New York City, Newark or Trenton. Neighborhoods are a kind of unincorporated municipality, though I wouldn't say the reverse is always true. The change described above describes Lincoln Park, Newark as "an unincorporated community and neighborhood within the city of Newark", which is reasonably accurate. There was a whole series of edits tagging places into Category:Unincorporated communities in New Jersey. Ignoring the whole issue of the use of the category, the same editor removed a series of Trenton neighborhoods from the category. It would seem that all neighborhoods and census-designated places would belong in the category, but they've either been removed or never added. The bottom line is that there is a clear overlap between neighborhood and unincorporated community, but we have to do a better job with the definition. Alansohn (talk) 01:36, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

As I see it, using only the state map doesn't provide sufficient context and using both county and state maps is redundantly repetitive overkill that isn't needed multiple times. It's really not relevant what's done elsewhere as there are very few county maps out there. Any suggestions as to how to address this, perhaps a poll at WT:NJ? That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

• Cwmhiraeth (submissions) took Bumblebee, a level-4 vital article, to Good Article;
• AHeneen (submissions) worked-up the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 article, also to Good Article status;
• Rodw (submissions) developed an extremely timely article to Good Article, taking Magna Carta there some 800 years after it was first sealed;
• And last but not least, Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points) worked up a number of Featured Pictures during round 1, including the 1948 one Deutsche Mark (pictured right), receiving the maximum bonus due to the number of Wikis that the related article appears in.

Union City High School citation formatting

At some point I began using "Retrieved" because that's what citation templates use, and I wanted my "manually" written citations to match the wording used by the templates. I remembered that some time ago, when we disagreed on this point (I don't recall the exact conversation or date of it, nor do I have a link handy, so correct me if I'm wrong) that you stated that an editor should not change the formatting unless he/she is the primary editor of the article. I do not recall if you cited a specific guideline or MOS page for this. Use of sic hide=y tag

I saw that you removed a "sic hide=y" tag that I added to the article Harrison Township School District, with the explanation, "there is no need to tag it in any way". I thought I should explain what the purpose of the tagging is. It is to prevent someone from accidentally "improving" a quotation. In this case, the tagged phrase is "comprised of" in a quotation. Many people believe "comprised of" is not the best wording in a Wikipedia article and search for articles that contain the phrase and edit it. I do that a lot. We obviously try to leave quotations alone, but it is easy to make a mistake. The sic template exists to prevent that. It prevents an article from even showing up in a search for the tagged phrase, which saves copy editors time as well. The hide=y argument means this does not affect what the reader sees at all; it's just for editors. Bryan Henderson (giraffedata) (talk) 03:05, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

• There is nothing wrong with "comprised of", and even less reason to correct it inside a quotation. As there appears to be only one editor making these "corrections" and trying to "improve" the article, the best way to avoid this problem is to simply leave such articles alone, which saves time for all editors involved. Regardless of whether there is anything wrong with "comprised of", there are many people changing it, and many more supporting my own changing of it, so I am certainly not going to stop. Given that, it's hard to understand why you would actively remove a sic template from an article, as opposed to leaving the article alone; I suppose it's more about making a point about whether people should be changing "comprised of" than about improving the article? I don't believe that is a legitimate use of a Wikipedia edit, but I just wanted to make sure you understood the edit and it sounds like you do. Giraffedata, irregardless of your opinion, there is absolutely nothing that is wrong with "comprised of" in the context of its use within a direct quotation. It simply ain't wrong, no matter what you think. I'm sure that there are other editors who feel the obsessive need to exceedingly go about "correcting" examples of split infinitives or those who believe that they must wipe out every example of situations where prepositions are used to end quotations with. Copyediting is fine, but improperly marking quotations with a sic tag is wrong. You are the only Wikipedia editor making these needless edits and we don't need to have misused sic tags applied simply to prevent yourself from misediting the same article a second time; these edits to add the sic tag are not a legitimate Wikipedia edit as I see it. It's time for the silent majority to rise up as the Comprised Of League of Defense to protect all articles from such pointless editing practices. Let the COLD War begin today! New Jersey towns, section order

I believe that the section order in these town articles should be re-standardized - although you may be involved in local government, most readers are not likely to be concerned at all with local government and politics on a day-to-day basis. On the other hand, the average reader is far more likely to be concerned with the issues of education and transportation. Best, Castncoot (talk) 07:04, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

• Castncoot, we probably would benefit from re-standardizing the order of sections in municipal articles. Given that there is a standard to be re-standardized, we should probably leave that standard unchanged until we have consensus on a new standard. While it does not establish a policy in any way shape or form, WP:USCITIES does provide some optional suggestions that place the sections in order by Government, Education and Transportation. I surmise that the average reader wouldn't want Politics of all topics to be placed as high up as it is in many of the New Jersey town articles and may in fact find this to be an embarrassing shortcoming for these articles.   • Castncoot, I understand your efforts to consider reordering sections in these articles. I'm sure that I had something to do with the establishment of the order in the article for Allendale and elsewhere in the state, but this order has been based on guidance elsewhere. Whether you take a look at the suggestions in WP:USCITIES or at featured articles such as Boston, the order of Government, followed by Education, followed by Transportation is followed. I'm sure that there are better ways to do this, but the best way to do this is by reaching consensus and leaving the article in the pre-existing order until that new consensus is reached. This is an interesting discussion. Alansohn, I had also looked at WP:USCITIES myself, and to be honest, all three (Government, Education, and Transportation) are downgraded according to this guideline (just a guideline, and one with which I have several disagreements and which is geared toward large cities, in any case). The guideline also suggests mentioning something about local politics within government, but again, specifically for larger cities. Therefore, WP:USCITIES appears to be tremendously unhelpful here, for smallish New Jersey towns. I think we need to use simple common sense and good judgement here. The average reader looking up Allendale, New Jersey is more likely to be interested in its demographics, educational system(s), and public and/or road and highway access before he or she contemplates the name of the current mayor or councilmembers. I agree that WP:USCITIES is highly flawed, but it is intended to be a guide to the organization of articles about places of all sizes. I'm sure that you have your perceptions as to what readers want to know about in what order, as do I. Are there many Featured Articles on small towns? If so, I agree they could be a relevant guideline for consensus, and I also agree we should strive to reach a consensus. Otherwise, an alternative might be to contemplate what one might look for in the website city-data.com. Also, the fact is that there is readily available information about the names of school board members of these towns' school districts - the average reader is likely to be just as disinterested in these names as well. Education, Transportation, and Government thus speak for themselves, but the politics associated with Education or Government (or the Transportation department, for that matter) are far less important, although certainly worth mentioning, when dealing with these smallish towns, from this perspective. Actually, please look up Allendale Charter Township in Michigan, as you were the one who suggested looking at articles across the US. At the time of this writing, there isn't even a Government section, even though there is a government, as stated in the infobox. On the other hand, the Education section directly follows Demographics. I've also noticed that no other state's municipalities' Government section carries as much material as in New Jersey - but this goes against WP:USCITIES, which again, you seem to be relying on, albeit partially and selectively. I also don't believe I have any burden here, because I don't believe an applicable consensus was ever reached for New Jersey towns, which mostly have < 100K in population - while the spirit and intent of the very roughly and poorly designed WP:USCITIES is clearly aimed at big cities. As you notice, Government is getting its fair play in this list, using the perspective of criteria as would be ranked in terms of mundane, day-to-day concerns of inhabitants of New Jersey suburban towns, who incorporate vastly different concerns from those in large cities. The average citizen has to travel every day, for example, many to New York City or Philadelphia, and a large percentage if not a majority in these smallish suburban towns have school-aged children; on the other hand, the average citizen is not showing up in council chambers each day, nor do government decisions in small towns match the attention received by every word uttered or every move ordered by the mayor of a big city, nor is there generally a plurality of single people in these towns for whom public education is not as prominent an issue. If one can make the reasonable assumption that readers of New Jersey town articles want to get an authentic "flavor" of a given town itself, then IMHO, this list is sensible. • I guess we have three choices here. We can adopt WP:USCITIES as a standard; We can use the de facto consensus standard used in articles for New Jersey that has been established over the past dozen years; or we can follow your proposed standard (for which I cannot understand separating Government and Politics into two discrete sections). While USCITIES is not policy, it does provide a model of section orders used across the nation and in featured articles. Sure Allendale, New Jersey isn't Boston. But neither is Newark, Jersey City or New Jersey, yet I'm confident that these are full-fledged cities. There are Teterboro and Tavistock at the smallest end of New Jersey municipalities, but where would we draw the line in the List of municipalities in New Jersey between large cities and those subject to your proposed NJCITIES? Where do Atlantic City and Hackensack cities with 40,000-odd residents fit in, and what about Neptune City (a borough with about 5,000 residents) or Corbin City (a city with 500 or so people). As to content of sections, we can search the nation for the lowest quality articles and gut New Jersey articles to match the lowest standard or we could work to encourage editors in Michigan and elsewhere to be far more thorough and complete following the standard we've set here. Think it through, modify your structure as needed, and make your best case at WT:NJ. I am rather leery of the proposal, But I am more than happy to abide by whatever formal consensus is established through this process. Alansohn (talk) 13:49, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

Glad to see this forum progressing in a positive discussion and rapidly so, Alansohn (talk). I think reasonable people can work pretty quickly. First, let me say that the Michigan article simply represented an exaggerated counterexample; obviously I don't believe that any town with a government should or can be devoid of a Government section, and my proposed list order above includes Government squarely in the middle. Likewise, I believe WP:USCITIES is awful, you have acknowledged that is flawed yourself, and I suspect that it's also caused many town article editors to shun it across the country. Choices would be to include all municipalities in New Jersey which come with the title "City" alone (there must be a mere ten or fifteen of them, perhaps, compared to over 500 townships and boroughs?-you would know better than I) under WP:USCITIES (which I don't favor), or to place ALL towns AND cities under the new WP:NJCITIES template. You yourself acknowledged at the outset of this discussion that the de facto status quo is also not acceptable, so it would be frankly hypocritical to maintain an unacceptable product. Finally, I have deliberately proposed making Politics a separate section because I believe that we as editors must have insight and responsibility when informing the reader to separate essential governmental services, such as the structure of a town's government and its police and fire protection, from comparatively non-essential information, including the names and political affiliations of current councilmembers. Nothing else seems to get this editor's attention and even he seems to have been scared off by the bizarre outburst from BMK, his protector in chief, who has previously been rather blind and accommodating to his misbehavior.     • Believe you me, I've tried taking the high road and it's utterly failed. When he started editing, I left more than a dozen messages explaining why he needed to add sources to his edits and that seems to have pissed him off to no end. He persists in leaving behind little land mines, editing articles purposelessly that he's never edited before on a random basis, solely to create potential opportunities to violate the interaction ban. I've tolerated this bullshit for months, going way out of my way to avoid conflict and not editing the articles he's created without intervening edits, while he's been deliberately stalking me and running ahead of my edits to maliciously create it. If some jerk was constantly following you around, persistently editing the same articles you edited, deliberately manufacturing conflicts and trying to craft a justification for a block, riding your ass day after day after day, you'd do exactly what I've done; any rational person would. Teaneck, New Jersey and "voluntary" voting

So can you give me any examples of "involuntary voting"? Perhaps being marched to the ballot box at the point of a gun? Maybe falling on the ballot and knocking loose a chad with your lapel? As far as Teaneck's claim of being a "first" there are numerous examples of integrated schools many years before Teaneck, and certainly many of those were not 'forced' by a court. At this time, I have not been able to find a reference to any of these being a result of a popular vote (I do have some records of school boards voting); you an be assured that when I do it will be a 'voluntary' vote, and not a 'visceral' or 'forced' or otherwise 'involuntary' vote. Take a look across the Internet and you'll find articles such as The Legacy of Forced Busing In Boston about Boston's experience facing a court-ordered busing plan, one of many where districts implemented busing plans under strong external pressure, making the votes elsewhere anything but voluntary. As to Teaneck, take a look at the 1968 book Triumph in a White Suburb: The Dramatic Story of Teaneck, New Jersey, the First Town in the Nation to Vote for Integrated Schools. On its dust jacket, the book describes how "Their greatest achievement occurred in 1965, when Teaneck became the first town in the nation where a white majority went to the ballot box and voted for school integration." More recently you have "50 years later, Teaneck recalls integration of its schools" which describes "... that early September day 50 years ago when Teaneck became the first community in America to vote to desegregate its schools — in this case, by busing students from all parts of the city to a new, centralized sixth grade." I do recognize that other communities have similar claims, but there are ample reliable and verifiable sources recognizing Teaneck's accomplishment. WikiCup 2015 May newsletter

C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) is a long-period comet discovered on 17 August 2014 by Terry Lovejoy; and is one of several Featured Pictures worked up by The Herald (submissions) during the second round.

The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.

Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.

• Coemgenus (submissions) was one of several users who worked on improving Ulysses S. Grant. Remember, you do not need to work on an article on your own - as long as each person has completed significant work on the article during 2015, multiple competitors can claim the same article.
• Cwmhiraeth (submissions) took Dragonfly to Good Article for a 3x bonus - and if that wasn't enough, they also took Damselfly there as well for a 2x bonus.
• LeftAire (submissions) worked up Alexander Hamilton to Good Article for the maximum bonus. Hamilton was one of the founding fathers of the United States and is a level 4 vital article.

The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. 0.1 not equal to 0.100

In your recent edit to Collingswood, New Jersey, you state in the caption that 0.1 and 0.100 are not the same thing. I don't see that it's a big deal one way or another, but what do you mean? I looked in the manual of style and didn't find answers there. In school, they teach that trailing zeros after a decimal point do not affect the value of a number and "roll off." I'm sure you know what you're doing; please teach me the significance so I can be sure to do it correctly in the future.

• JaconaFrere, see Significant figures, which discusses the significance of trailing zeros after the decimal point. In our example, 0.1 could be the result of rounding a number between 0.05 and 0.15, while 0.100 would mean that the number would be between 0.0005 and 0.0015, a much higher degree of precision. WP:MOSNUM further addresses the issue and recommends a consistent degree of precision for all the numbers listed in this context, all of which (total, land and water area) have three decimal places, as provided by the source from the Census Bureau. A small measure of good faith in trying to understand the issue and refraining from making any such edits until you understand the issue would have been helpful, rather than needlessly running off to look for every occurrence of 0.100 so that you could drop the trailing zeros. Again, 0.1 is NOT the same as 0.100, which is an issue of precision, not equality. Alansohn (talk) 17:54, 12 May 2015 (UTC)

  • A perusal of other place articles around the U.S. seems to contradict the 3 significant digit "rule". I checked around twenty such articles randomly; none outside of New Jersey contained a trailing zero after the decimal. Is New Jersey the only place it's done right? Maybe so.     • JaconaFrere, you're trying to do two things here: 1) change the wording of the standard geography template, mainly to remove "of it", and 2) change the number of decimal places in numbers with trailing zeros, as seen in this edit.
    • 1) The basic wording dates back to the first edit of the article in 2002 by Ram-Man, which included the dreaded "of it", which has stayed there for more than 12 years. There are thousands of articles using this wording. There's nothing grammatically incorrect with "of it", but the working you're using is flat-out wrong. What you have is "(0.1 km²) of (3.99%) water", which has the parenthetical percentage floating meaninglessly in between "of" and "water".
    • 2) You need to review the content of significant figures, which describes that "Stating the result as 12.2300 makes clear that it is precise to four decimal places (in this case, six significant figures)." So 0.1 is accurate to one decimal place, while 0.100 is accurate to three places; It's more precise. There is a difference. Next is MOS:UNCERTAINTY, which specifies that "The number of decimal places should be consistent within a list or context (The response rates were 41.0 and 47.4 percent, respectively, not 41 and 47.4 percent), unless different precisions are actually intended." So using "0.1" is wrong, because of the loss of precision and the inconsistency; All the are data in the sentence have three decimal places and all of them should have three decimal places.
    • The best case, even if you were right on all fronts, is that you've done nothing more than rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic. The encyclopedia is no better for these changes. As the wording is inconsistent with the standard used across Wikipedia since these articles were created and as your changes conflict with the Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Dates and numbers guideline, the articles are worse than they started. There is room for improvement, but do so based on a clear understanding of the underlying principles and policies. Alansohn (talk) 01:59, 13 May 2015 (UTC)

        • In this edit, you've removed "of it", which has been there for a dozen years and is not a grammatical error. In its place, you made it "including 3.164 square miles (8.196 km²) of land and 0.131 square miles (0.339 km²) of (3.98%) water." What does "of (3.98%) water" mean? If you're going to fix something that isn't incorrect, why deliberately introduce an error that makes it worse than it was before. Please tell me that you read and understand significant figures and tell me that 0.1 and 0.100 are not different (note that the typo was corrected). The issue here, from the beginning, was your improper removal of trailing zeros from a number that read "0.100" and your changing it to "0.1". I clearly stated that a change had been made, writing "tell me that 0.1 and 0.100 are not different (note that the typo was corrected)".                       • Again, my apologies for my mistake and any confusion it may have caused. If I had realized that I had made the mistake, I would have corrected it before pressing enter. Once I realized it, I made the correction -- and clearly indicated that I had made the correction -- to match the title "0.1 not equal to 0.100". Just as you realized that the leading zero before the decimal place is needed per editing guidelines, so too the trailing zeros are meaningful and necessary, both to provide the information on the significant figures / precision of the number and to conform with WP:MOSNUM editing guidelines on maintaining consistent precision (i.e., the same number of decimal places) in all numbers in the same context. Fabulous work on upgrading the Bergen County article, Alansohn, thank you! I think this should be kicked up another notch for New Jersey counties in general. Have you seen the Orange County, California article before, with its wealth of municipal demographic information? Let me know what you think of doing the same for New Jersey counties. Thanks for the thanks from both of you. I'm working my way through the counties by alphabetical order, updating geography, county government, politics and municipalities as a focus, with other edits as they arise. I think that the New Jersey county articles are a strong start, but where the California articles come off better is in history an other sections where there is greater work in prose and descriptions of geography, economy, sports and culture. I'd love to see one of the New Jersey county articles expanded using Orange, Los Angeles or Nape counties as a model, perhaps with one of the weaker county articles. Castncoot, kudos to you on the ethnodemographic side, which should be ported over to other counties, and I agree that Hudson County would be a good place to start, probably followed by Essex and Passaic in the area. JaconaFrere, I think that we are reaching some sort of consensus on some of the wording for area and other data, and I hope that we can mutually agree on some wording that would allow us to use AWB (or other tools) to apply the changes on a more consistent, thorough and faster basis. Use of the Definite Article in the Title

Isn't it bad style to use the definite article in the title such as The Lewis School of Princeton? I've had other pages I created using the definite article changed by other editors to remove it. Is that wrong? Clarification would be helpful. Djkeddie (talk) 12:08, 21 May 2015 (UTC)

• Djkeddie, as to the use of the definite article, see WP:THE. An argument could be made either way, and you might well have support for removal of the definite article. The issue is the way you handled the removal. The proper way to do it is to move the article. What you did was a Cut-and-paste move, which would leave the new article having none of the edit history of the original version. Request for Assistance

User:Alansohn, I'm in need of your assistance. Hopefully, you can be impartial and see through all that has been happening here. There is a WP article entitled Az-Zakariyya that I tried to make revisions to, by adding the current Israeli data about the village (now a Jewish Moshav, but formerly an Arab village). The author of that article (an Arab) disagreed that I add any current status about the village (such as current population stats, photographs, etc.) and so I desisted from doing so. See history of page. Since there was a second article written about the same Moshav (namely, Zekharia, this time written by a Jew but much shorter in scope), I decided to work on his article and to bring it up to par by enhancing it and carrying over some of the information found in the other article, but improving it and deleting derogatory statements about Israel. Now, the same (Arab) editor is deleting my edits on Zekharia. I have brought this matter to your attention since you are an experienced editor with more experience than me. If you wish to know the complete matter and what has so far transpired between me and the other editor, you may wish to see the Talk page on Az-Zakariyya, under the section: "Merge." I would hope that you can help solve our dispute, but more importantly, that the editor in question does not continue to disrupt by vandalism my editing, just as I would not disrupt another person's editing.Davidbena (talk) 03:38, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

Currently rewriting Kittatinny Mountain

Alansohn, guru on all things New Jersey -- I am presently sandboxing a rewrite of Kittatinny Mountain at User:JackTheVicar/sandbox/Box5. I just wrote up a table for the various named prominences along the mountain as table of elevations/locations but the table became much larger than I expected and aesthetically disruptive (no one likes big tables in the middle of an article). Before I answer my own question--after reviewing it and if you get an idea where I seem to be going comprehensively with my draft rewrite--do you think I should (a) keep it in is present location? (b) make the table collapsible? or (c) keep the geographical features section a prose paragraph, incorporate some elevation information into the prose, and move the table to the end, creating a new section for "list of prominences and elevations" or something along those lines? or (d) remove it entirely and let the location and elevation information be in the smaller location/site articles? or (e) create a new article "List of elevations/prominences/features" article incorporating the table? or (f) something I haven't thought of yet that you see as a better option? I'm leaning toward C primarily, or at least E, but I'd prefer an outside set of eyes for suggestions. JackTheVicar (talk) 19:23, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

MikeJDavi, take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools/Article guidelines, which describes the general consensus that high schools have a presumption of notability that elementary schools don't share. Take a look at the scope and breadth of the sources in the high school article and compare it to the distinct lack of such references in the article for the elementary school.
