Gaza

Hi, regarding your good work on Gaza.

• Regarding Ancient Gaza, you might find interest in this link [1].
• Regarding Tel al-Hawa, I'm not sure that what you wrote is right. I believe the neighbourhood was there long before the Palestinian authority, but it was a more country like neighborhood (agricultural) with small buildings and open spaces between the buildings. The palestinian authority build there big buildings and modernize it. since I'm not 100% sure about it, I suggest that you will not write what I say, but change a bit the way the article is written now.Tushyk (talk) 22:14, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

I read the Gaza article until the demographic paragraph and I have some remarks:

• History
• First Battle of Gaza (1917), First Battle of Gaza (1917), Third Battle of Gaza and Egyptian Expeditionary Force are all good articles and should be included in the history paragraph.
• I don't know if it should be in the history or economy paragraph, but the main business in gaza was the barley trade. According 1911 britannica http://www.1911encyclopedia.org/Gaza,

The export to Britain only was 30,000 tons a year. This is a huge number. In all of Israel these days the wheat production (barley is hardly grown these days) is about 200,000 tons a year. If considered the better agriculture of these days, one must assume that this barley was from fields of the whole south of Palestine. Regarding this number, I read a book with old documents of jewish barely trader from gaza from these times and he gives numbers of total barley export which are way way smaller, so maybe the britannica 1911 is not so relayable.

• gaza after the ww1 war. According an article in Hebrew http://www.snunit.k12.il/heb_journals/katedra/63098.html which concentrate on muhamad rushdi an high officer in the othman army and later the engeneer of gaza during british rule, most of the buildings in gaza were destroyed in the war because of the bordbardments (G. Macmunn & C. Falls, OfficiaI History of the Great War: Egypt and Palestine, London 1928, p. 75).

It is also written there that in march 1917 jamal pecha ordered all population out of town and that only on 1920 when british army rule moved to british civilian rule, the population started to come back to the ruined city. The Hebrew article also talks about the planning of the "new" gaza. It says that the british governer and rushdi decided together to concentrate in few main streets in the old city and to build new neighbourhoods around the old city. By the way, I didn't finish yet with the history, and I will try to continue in the next days, but I think the article must talk about the main streets like omar el-muchtar, salach a-din, el-wahda, and some of the squares like phalastine square and other squares.Tushyk (talk) 19:44, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

3 4 new 1948-villages

Hi,

• As you might have noticed by now, I am always keen on articles with photos..Surfing the "commons" I have found pictures for 3 "1948"-villages -where the articles have not been created yet. They are Kafr Saba, Barfiliya, and Bayt Jiz. I have started collecting information about them here: User:Huldra/Sources. I think "Kafr Saba" is especially important; it parallels the development at Nabi Rubin. See also Kfar Saba. I think both Kafr Saba and Bayt Jiz are DYK -material. Please feel free to start any of those articles, if you like! (I have some Gaza+ other work to do)
• Also, former leaders (pre-1900) in Palestine is an area not well covered. An example: I have just lately come across the Governors of Gaza and Jaffa; between 1807 and 1818 he was a Muhammed Aby Nabbut, who built the "Tarbitha" well in Jaffa: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Abu_Nabut_Trough, and was involved in rebuilding Al-Jiyya. Between 1818-1820 the Governor was a Mustafa Bey, involved in rebuilding Huj. We really should have a list of those governors (and an article about each of them).
• And I just wondered: when you upload pictures to Wikipedia, is there any reason why you upload them to en.wikipedia...and not to the "commons"? It is so much easier if it is all on the "commons"...(hint, hint)

  • Ok, as I´m sure you see from User:Huldra/Sources: Having several ref.-sections on one page is not a good idea! I hope you figure things out.
  • And yes: I´m still busy adding inf. to the Gaza-district 1948-villagers (still a lot to do)
  • as for the governors: There was also one from the Madi-family from Ijzim, around 1830. (source: Schölch, p182). Perhaps we should start a page with the list of the Governors we know, perhaps a Sandbox/List of Governors of Gaza and Jaffa, so we can a bit informally list the names/sources we have? • Oh, and then there was Belvoir Fortress, for hundreds of years the place of the Palestinian village Kawkab al-Hawa (District of Baysan), depopulated in 1948. The CBS's website is good for nothing as you can see, so I will try to call in favors from friends back home. On another note, just wanted to let you know that I just started working on Latakia. I've already expanded the history section quite a bit, it still needs major work. I've also asked a friend from there to take photos of it, because none of the photos are the least presentable. That's good, but I wouldn't use Reston - he is not an historian, and his book is more entertainment than history. Anything in Reston's book can be found in a better, academic, source (like Lyons and Jackson), and if it can't be found anywhere else it probably comes from Reston's imagination. Sheikh Radwan?

could you check on the area Sheikh Radwan, it appears to be describing An Naser. An Naser lies between An Nazlah and the beach camp/Al-Shati camp.... Sheikh Radwan is between An Nazlah and Jabaliyah with al Daraj and at Tuffah to the south according to the 3 street maps I have...Ashley kennedy3 (talk) 09:40, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

according to my maps google has Sheikh Radwan too far to the west over An Naser (which google doesn't show) and al Nazlah, and al Nazlah where Jabalia is. and Jabalia where Sheikh Radwan is; according to UN and local maps I have (who all agree with each other), google maps is the odd one out. A three way clockwise rotation of name places. Turn the google map names of al Nazlah, Sheikh Radwan and Jabalia anti clockwise and they would be in the right place....if you can follow that....or to put it another way google an nazlah=Jabalia... The texan map has sort of maintained the 1948 map positions. While Humans being humans have extended jabaliah nothwards, an nazlah has grown south while radwan has grown east to west. The texans are 60 years out of date...Ashley kennedy3 (talk) 00:01, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

For the coords it depends on the point in time you want them for. Due to the increase in population from 1947 to 1967 (600%) the area Sheikh Radwan got built on extensively and sub-divided into an Naser and Sheikh Radwan, while al Nazlah got extended westwards slightly north of Sheikh Radwan and the original centre of al Nazlah being subsumed by Jabalia.

The area described in the article is the old 1947 area (agreeing with Palestine Remembered and the Texans) and not the modern designation. The area bordering the beach camp is now called an Naser...Ashley kennedy3 (talk) 14:18, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Hey Ameer, while I am no expert on Gaza, a search of "Radwan" (in Arabic) in the northrern Gaza Strip returns the following [2]. Please note that "D", "G", "H", and "I" have nothing to do with Radwan, as Radwan in a personal name, and "J" is not in Sheikh Radwan either. These results are in the vicinity of Google map's definition of Sheikh Radwan. I would suggest using the Google coords, until we get a clear definition of the neighborhood boundaries. --Fjmustak (talk) 20:00, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

A search of "Zeitoun" (in Arabic) on Google maps gave me this [3]. If I had to take a guess, it's around the "B","C","E" area. "A" is a school called Zeitun, "D" is a pharmacy with that name. "B" and "C" are a school and a mosque named "Zeitun martyrs", and "E" is the only tag that explicitly claims to be in the "Zeitun neighborhood". I'll put in the coords for Sheikh Radwan and what I think is the Zeitun area, and I'll also check Tel El-Hawa. --Fjmustak (talk) 20:13, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Rimal

Port of Gaza was a couple of Ks from Gaza city and the Europeans started Rimal off because it was close to the docks/commerce. The docks were there long before the population moved to where the money was. Ceasarea same, city in the hinterland dock on the coast, Majdal same. Gaza was on the standard layout of a palestinian port city. The Port of Gaza is Rimal....The ancient port and city lies underneath the modern Rimal..It was the reason for Gaza city "the most important" trading port; due to it being at the crossroads of the Via Maris and the Nabatean spice road linking trade from Damascus, Cairo and Arabia to the western markets....One of the reasons Rome invaded and why Pompey had it rebuilt quickly after Alexander Jannaeus interrupted the trade by destroying Maioumas (early trade war). Maioumas/Rimal is also Archaeologically important due to the links with licentious Pagan festivals of which it was the centre of up to the late Byzantine era......Ashley kennedy3 (talk) 12:30, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Nasser

I saw you mention you wanted to work on that article. The one English book I have that I would think would be a good source is Autumn of Fury by Heikal which mostly deals with Sadat but also is a good resource on parts of the revolution and Nasser. My father has a whole library of books in Arabic, unfortunately with my reading abilities it would take several years for me to go through them and translate the relevant passages. I do live by a university with a very good library collection, so if you know of any books that would be helpful I should be able to get my hands on them. Honestly, I wish we could use Abdel Halim as a RS, I have every song he made about Nasser memorized (a product of being raised in a house that had more pictures of Nasser than of me or my brother :)). I am going to check out the library out here to find what I can and read up, not sure how to start though. I was thinking about just copying the current article in the sandbox and start going a section at a time in there but dont know if that is a good idea. Plan on starting in 2 weeks or so. 12th century Muslim generals

I have pretty much completed footnoting the "Saladin in Egypt" article. If you have a moment to glance at it I'm still new to footnoting and would appreciate your opinion.

I am somewhat familiar with Turanshah and Saif al-Din, specifically their relationships with Saladin. Reviewing my sources I could potentially proceed with a Turanshah article sooner than a al-Fadil article (estimating 2-3 weeks for a draft worthy of posting). I see what you mean about repeating names, but hopefully specific bio and possibly the addition of their longer titles will clarify this point. Salam! I have a question. Would mentioning (paraphrasing) details like "Saleh Helmi Samouni, 30, says he pleaded with the Israelis to evacuate the wounded but they told him, 'Go back to death.'" "They said when their father stepped out with his hands raised, he was shot dead." and "'I told them I work for the Red Crescent and there are wounded that need to be evacuated. They just said, Sheket, Hebrew for "Shut Up," and 'told us to get out.'"[5] be considered POV? I have so much details to include, but I am guessing that these details will be taken out anyway and I make this prediction based on experience with related articles. Here is an example of how I would present it in the article (don't mind the close paraphrasing here) One of the occupants, Attila Samouni, presented his ID to the IDF and told the soldiers that he is the owner of the house. After Attila told them that he has children and pleaded for them to hold their fire, they shot him repeatedly, about 20 - 30 times according to witnesses.This is one of the sources. The anti-Arab graffiti was a very prominent incident mentioned in numerous sources even in sources that do not mention the Samouni attack specifically. I don't think this will be a POV issue since we have an article listing antisemitic incidents during the conflict. Request for assistance

Hi:

I was wondering – I’ve been trying to avoid the prospect of eight or so editors being topic banned as a result of the West Bank – Judea Samaria arbitration case. These editors run the gamut of outlooks on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and I was hoping that if they could all work together, as per my proposal here, it would forestall more dire remedies. However, there may be some editors who would question my neutrality (though I can’t reiterate enough how little I personally care which way things end up). To that end, it seemed to me that if you, an editor in good standing who can plausibly be thought of as pro-Palestinian (and yet who has not been edit-warring on West Bank v. Judea-Samaria, right?), were to join me in helping out with the project, it would ease some minds. I’d really like to see these editors spared from a draconian decision. Thoughts? WP Palestine/WP Israel tagging overlapping

Hi Ameer, You mentioned in your reversion of Talk:Tel Aviv that you removed WP Palestine per some old discussion. Can you please point it out for me? Also do we have a central repository of agreed upon guidelines in Israel/Palestine topics? If so, it would be nice to maybe we could add something like Template:Calm_talk linking to the guideline page in the header of talk pages of articles where there is a high potential of the unknowing editor violating these guidelines. One more thing about WP Palestine and WP Israel overlapping. Is there a quick way to list articles that are "double listed" under both wikiprojects, and then apply whatever decision was reached to them on a case by case basis (and maybe tag those that were reviewed and rightly fall under both projects). palestinian territory maps

I have been adding pushpin maps to the localities using the Template:Infobox Palestinian Authority municipality, but before I go any further wanted to check with you to see if you have any issues with it. So far, I have done Rafah, Bethlehem, Hebron, Gaza (hope you dont mind and it doesnt mess with GA review, if it does please remove it), and Jabalia. This started because Nablus was using a template that used an accesibility caption of 'Nablus is in Israel', so I made a new template to use that says '... is in the Palestinian territories'. there are actually a number of things that need to be corrected on the Palestinian municipality template, I am working on it here with an example here. The coordinates section is outdated it seems, and adding another option for the pushpin map (hopefully then I can get the name working). will work on perhaps enlarging the map in the template, but I cant just widen it as it is going off an image on commons. I finished (I think) the template and updated the documentation. It is here with a diff of the changes here. Diff of the documentation changes here. Please read over the documentation as I borrowed quite a bit from the Israeli kibbutz infobox and had to adjust, so I might have missed something. All right, updated the template in mainspace and documentation, and now these articles have the pushpin maps: ('Atara, Abu Dis, Al-Khader, Bethlehem, Bethlehem, Bani Na'im, Bani Zeid, Bani Zeid al-Sharqiya, Beit 'Anan, Beit Hanoun, Beit Sahour, Bil'in, Bureij, Deir Istiya, Ein as-Sultan, Fandaqumiya, Faqqua, Gaza, Hebron, Ijnisinya, Jabalia, Jabel Mukaber, Jenin, Jericho, Kafr Thulth, Khirbet al-Malih, Nabi Samwil, Nablus, Ni'lin, Rafah, Ramallah, Tammun, Tubas, Tulkarm, Tuqu', Turmus Ayya). I went through all the articles that are using the template, probably a few more could go in and probably a few of those that I did use it in are not really necessary. I just didnt want to add it to articles that are too short, the page looks weird with a really long infobox and not that much text. But for any article you want to add it to, if the coordinates are already in the infobox all you need to do is add the line:
|pushpin_map=Palestinian territories
in the infobox and it will take care of the rest. I'll see what I can do as far the type of maps Ynhockey has created, with an enlarged inset, but that will probably take a while. Here is a shot at it. I just used the coords from the 'current locality', not sure if they are exactly correct (the coordinates, the dot that marks the coords is properly aligned). Hi Ameer, The website you sent is that of the Jifna Hope Association, definitely not the official website. Unfortunately, the official Jifna village council website (http://www.jifna.org.ps/) is one of those that is not up anymore. Here's the latest content from archive.org. I added a link to that has the websites of R&B governorate municipality websites (some up, some down), as well as the same for the Nablus governorate. They're at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Palestine/Websites. Now I've noticed some municipal/village councils have dead links in the list, but have a new domain name. It is possible Jifna is one of those. Oh yes, I forgot about Al-Burj. Never been to it, but as I understand, it's an ancient fort. I believe the restaurant closed after the Al-Aqsa Intifada, but my memory has been known to fail me at times. Hello Ameer, Let me start with the Hebron villages... I noticed that the interwiki links to non-existent pages in the Arabic Wikipedia for many of the Hebron vilalges (such as Beit 'Amra). Back to Jifna, the JMCC source seems to be quite dated (I'd say written around 1999). We should definitely mention Al-Burj at least as a Crusader fort (Haven't found a recent source saying the restaurant is either open or closed). Here's a review (Also from 1999) of Al-Burj Restaurant. On page 2 of this church bulletin, there's some history on Jifna, including etymology. I will read the current Wikipedia article and translate anything new from this source. Here's a link to institutions and restaurants/resorts in or related to Jifna (in Arabic unfortunately). Yes, I just suggested the same for Tiamut on the Bayt Dajan-talk-page (It is really Tiamut who has done a great job expanding the article). My further work on the article will be on the "culture"-part, I think, especially the development of the costumes during the 1920-30s. There is a lot about it, both in the Weir-book and the Rajab-book (And I have both..) In fact; there is no 1948-village where the costumes have been so extensively studied (by Weir and Widad Kawar together) as just Bayt Dajan (which is why I started the article in the first place.). Turan-shah

Hello again Ameer,

I've done some work on a page for Turan-shah, Saladin's older brother and conqueror of Nubian/Yemen (under that title since Turanshah is occupied by the Ayybud Sultan by that name). Like I said, I am only really knowledgeable on Turan-shah through his involvement with Saladin in Egypt. To that end I have yet to internally cite him in the "Saladin in Egypt" article, or any others. If you have some spare time I would greatly appreciate an edit and any additional information that you can add (preferably about his earlier life or after his conquest of Yemen, as those areas are a little grey for me). My footnotes will be up in the next day or so, as well as possible images. I hope this was the kind of start you are looking for.

But I think I would have to have consensus before changing the article to an A so your revert is correct. Well I think it is definitely not a start class article, which can be an unreferenced, inaccurate article that is not a stub. So do you think it should be at least a C class for now? I did take length into consideration when I decided to change the grade. Ka'ak is a little known baked good so I didn't think the article could be expanded any further; it is not going to be the length of an article like scone. But surprisingly, the article on ka'ak is longer than the article on its more popular counterpart, ma'amoul. Also, this food article has GA status and it is not much bigger than the ka'ak article. I think it is best to judge on whether the article covers everything on the subject, and as you know, length will vary. Nonetheless, now that I think about it more, I guess the article can be expanded to include information on etymology and more information on the different ka'aks (like the Yemeni ka'ak). The problem is the lack of reliable sources. Anyway, I will change it to C for now, but if it is expanded further with reliable sources, we can consider upgrading the status. History would also be interesting to cover. The article currently says that ka'ak is the Arabic word for cake, that is what I was told by my mother when I was younger, but the not-sweet biscuit[8] was certainly nothing like cake! So I am really interested in the origin of the word. I will try to see if I could find reliable sources. Recipe web sites are not reliable sources, right?

As for the Zeitoun article, I have yet to review it and honestly I was waiting for you to do the second review. I see you did some changes to the lead, was not sure if that was your second review. Was it?

Yes, we can continue this on the article talk page, there is already a thread about the article name. I am not sure about the title, we can't use raid since I haven't come across a source that describes the killings as that. I do remember one source describing it as atrocities.[10] The term incident and I think the term attacks has also been used. I will check again to see what is the commonly used name.
