Zahir al-Umar has been nominated for Did You Know

Muhanna DYK

Hello Al Ameer, I took a look at the nomination. I have a suggestion: vassals changed sides all the time back then, but it is rare that they are forgiven by their sovereign and even rarer that they be forgiven twice. Muahnna was forgiven twice so maybe the nomination can mention this to make it more interested. The nomination will be like this :

... that the lord of Palmyra, Muhanna ibn Isa, twice defected to the Ilkhanate but was forgiven by sultan al-Nasir Muhammad and returned to Mamluk authority?

Its up to you to carry this. Cheers.--Attar-Aram syria (talk) 07:39, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

@Attar-Aram syria: I like your suggestion, I'll make the change. --Al Ameer (talk) 18:26, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Kafartab

Hi, Al Ameer son! Thank you for your article on Kafartab - I've found it a fascinating read!

  • Would you be able to provide the Arabic script for "Kafartab"?
  • Do you have any images of the town, possibly even from sources you know are now in the public domain?
  • It is mentioned in the lede as being in "Central Syria", but its introduced position between Maarat al-Numan and Shaizar (near Khan Shaykhun) seems to me to put it around the border of the Hama and Idlib Governorates, up in the northwest. Would you be able to clarify?
  • Do you know what happened to the town between the Ottomans and Boulanger's visit? I'm very curious now, especially since the last mentions of it you give, after its apparent decline under the Mamluk Sultanate to little more than a village, are nonetheless its survival through a 14th-century plague to exist in the 17th-century Ottoman Empire.

Thank you again for a great article! — Sasuke Sarutobi (talk) 18:17, 7 December 2015 (UTC)

@Sasuke Sarutobi: Thank you Sasuke. I can't write Arabic myself, but I'm sure someone else can add the Arabic script if requested. I changed the general location in the lead, but unfortunately I was not able to find coordinates for the ruins. I also didn't have luck finding info about the village between the 14th century and the 17th century. I'm sure that if it was still populated at the time there would be a record of it in the Ottoman censuses/tax records, I just don't know where to find that information. It's also possible that like many Syrian villages near the desert frontier, it was abandoned for lengthy periods of time due to Bedouin raids, consistently bad harvests or to avoid excessive taxation. I'll continue trying to find any information I can about Kafartab, including its coordinates. I hope others will have better luck than I did. Cheers --Al Ameer (talk) 23:31, 7 December 2015 (UTC)

Note

Hi, I nominated Jordan as a good article, would you mind doing the reviewing because no one has volunteered to do so? Makeandtoss (talk) 00:03, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi, Makeandtoss. I'd rather not review Jordan because I've never (or practically never) edited or reviewed an article about a country and my time has been constrained these past couple weeks. I wouldn't mind taking a look at the article though and giving you some feedback or suggestions at the talk page. I'll do that this week hopefully. Other than that, you might just have to wait and use the time until then to improve the article any way you can. The GA nominations have a notorious backlog and it often takes months before someone reviews an article. Each of my recent nominations took that long as well. --Al Ameer (talk) 18:35, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

MoS advice

Hello there, sorry to bother. I was wondering if there are unwritten rules about the use of BC/AD vs BCE/CE era formats because MoS is ambiguous in this regard. Personally I favor everything secular but someone decided that the BC/AD system is better on Temple of Eshmun and I can't really tell how this would make the article better. I went through the GA review and saw that it was you who suggested I switch to BCE/CE format so I was wondering if you have any input on this. please ping me when you can-Elias Z 15:38, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
