Advance Fee Fraud (419) References edit

Listen, do NOT remove any sections regarding 419 advance fee fraud. I patrol that article, so I know who removes what.

It is a truth that 419 happens in Lagos. It does NOT need to be described in detail; but a small subsection is enough! WhisperToMe (talk) 18:02, 20 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

"Placing it under "Economy" implies that this is a significant part of economic activity, which it is not." Aji, that is an incredibly untrue statement. I have read many, many, MANY articles which state that 419 is a huge part of the Nigerian economy. I found the Slate article, and I am sure I can find more articles.

"Advance-fee fraud boomed in Nigeria as government corruption and an economic downturn during the 1990s fueled poverty and disillusionment in the country, said Insa Nolte of the University of Birmingham's Centre of West African Studies.

To some, internet scams looked like an easy way to bag some quick cash.

"The availability of e-mail helped to transform a local form of fraud into one of Nigeria's most important export industries," Nolte said."

In fact, I'll add this. 419 belongs in the economy AND crime sections, and it also should be mentioned in Lagos and Amsterdam.

I'll look at more of your reply later, but I think the University of Birmingham statement invalidated the rationale in your post.

WhisperToMe (talk) 12:41, 22 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Regarding Nolte, you said: "Insa Nolte is not an economist nor has she published research on this subject (Advance fee fraud) or on the economy of Nigeria –http://www.cwas.bham.ac.uk/staff/nolte.htm"

The economy of Nigeria... could be in any one of these: "2002, "Chieftaincy and the State in Abacha's Nigeria: Kingship, Political Rivalry and Competing Histories in Abeokuta during the 1990s", in Africa 72 (3), 46-89.

2002, "Federalism and Communal Conflict in Nigeria", in Journal of Regional and Federal Studies 12 (1), 171-192. 2001, "Traditionelle Herrscher im modernen afrikanischen Staat: Das Beispiel Ijebu Remo in Nigerien" ("Traditional Rulers in the Modern African State: A Case Study of Ijebu Remo, Nigeria") in Zeitschrift für Weltgeschichte (Germany) 2 (2), 109-133."

In order to say she has not published research on the topic, you would have to read all of these books and find nothing on the Nigerian economy. Anyway, while for now I will use the Wired magazine as the source, I will e-mail her and ask her which book the statement from the Wired magazine article originated from. WhisperToMe (talk) 16:32, 22 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Also, per WP:RS, it is okay to cite the view of a person IF he or she has credentials - As the head of a history department at a British university, she seems like a good enough source for insight; all I have to do is show that she made the statements (i.e. attribute statements to her). WhisperToMe (talk) 16:34, 22 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Kindly do not revert agreed upon edits without extensive discussion and consensus. Because the mentioning of 419 is the status quo, the status quo WILL stay in the Nigeria article unless there is a consensus to revert WhisperToMe (talk) 04:04, 24 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

By the way, this shall continue in the Nigeria talk page. WhisperToMe (talk) 04:07, 24 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

By the way, I noticed that you were shocked by the allegations of the Nigerian government being corrupt. Many people believe that the Nigerian government(s) is/are corrupt to some degree. The BBC article "Nigeria - where the truth is hard to find" (about the crash of Bellview Airlines Flight 210) explains how and why information in Nigeria is difficult to verify because of complexities in politics and money: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4372458.stm WhisperToMe (talk) 04:24, 24 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, let's look over this.

could not operate without political connections." - www.haverford.edu/pols/faculty/glickman/Articles/CJAS_Text_final_1-35.pdf

That wasn't so hard.

Also, Aji, your arguments about knowing what an economy is, ETC. do not convince me. You think that 419 is not notable enough to mention in the Nigeria page while I think the opposite. IMO Wikipedia sees 419 as notable and significant. WhisperToMe (talk) 18:30, 26 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Aji, have you read Wizzy's remarks? As he said, 419 should be mentioned on the Nigeria page, but it should not be a large mention - it only needs to be brief. WhisperToMe (talk) 18:37, 26 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

First, we do things by consensus. There is no policy stating that crime cannot be mentioned on city pages, so we decide by arguments. Of course Wikipedia is subjective and selective in terms of deciding which content to include; we have to select content to keep. use the words "Content dispute" - Do not use "opinion" because you are confusing this dispute with a Wikipedia:NPOV. You are in a content dispute - Call it a content dispute.

Number two, please try to format your comments so they are precise and readable. For some reason I hate having to read through long blocks of text. Try to say more in less text, if you know what I mean. Also, if you need a large amount of text, try to format it so it is more readable. WhisperToMe (talk) 00:23, 28 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Where did I say you were the anon? Albeit us Wikipedians are suspicious of anonymous accounts and newly-registered accounts in terms of Wikipedia debates... WhisperToMe (talk) 21:57, 28 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

EDIT: I found the place. I stand by what I said - I doubt the identity of the other people - Also we do not appreciate Wikipedia:Meatpuppets (To find out what that is, look at it) - We want people who are "trusted" editors.

I added mentions of 419 in Ghana, Benin, and the Ivory Coast articles edit

Aji, I took the 419 mention from Nigeria and modified it to place in the articles for Ghana, Benin, and the Ivory Coast. I used anti-fraud statements from United States embassies as sources. I plan to add South Africa, Spain, Burkina Faso, Togo, and the Netherlands once I get enough sources. Nominated for deletion edit

Speedy deletion nomination of Banana Island edit

You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles. See the Article Wizard.

Thank you.

A tag has been placed on Banana Island, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising that only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an acceptable page. Please read the general criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item G11, as well as the guidelines on spam.

If you can indicate why the subject of this page is not blatant advertising,  . Clicking that button will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. You are welcome to edit the page to fix this problem, but please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. As well as removing promotional phrasing, it helps to add factual encyclopaedic information to the page, and add citations from independent reliable sources to ensure that the page will be verifiable. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Ellin Beltz (talk) 17:55, 21 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Welcoming New Volunteers
(25/06/2021)

We hereby want to officially welcome new volunteers who have recently joined the collaborative project and have volunteered to work in WP:NIGERIA. The arrival of new volunteers is often associated with the confusion of “what to do” on their part, it is then behoove of us to treat them with care, guide them, and protect them from the general pitfalls a new editor would most usually fall into. We are also admonished to clean up after them if they err and encourage them, most especially when they are genuine editors with potential to do good work not just for us, but for the community as a whole. Once more, we hereby thank all new editors who have volunteered to work here and hope they enjoy their stay here.
