Australian baseball task force

While I have written a baseball featured article, cricket is my first sporting love and I don't think I would be much good writing about baseball people specifically. News from the diamond A new-look Australian baseball league could be up and running in time for Summer 2010 The 2009 World Cup looms on the horizon... Can Australia improve from their 2007 attempt, their best ever result of 5th? From the Editor This 1st edition doesn't have a whole lot in it, as you can see. At this stage its more of a call to action than anything else: anyone wanting to help out the task force is more than welcome to join in. Even if you don't feel you have something you can contribute, please spread the word to others who might. My intention is to try and put this out once a quarter or so at this stage - assuming anyone's interested in receiving it. If things pick up and there's plenty to put into the newsletter, then it might come out a little more often. The only people that received this who have not specifically requested it are people listed as members of the task force itself. To those people: I'll move you guys to an 'inactive' list if I don't hear back one way or the other, and you won't keep receiving the newsletter after this- I'm using this to poke those that are still active into coming by the task force pages every once in a while.

New South Wales Major League

Doing all the teams is a big task, but will definitely continue to develop the project. I can try and help, but I don't have much first hand experience with the teams. Yeah, I won't be putting the pages up until I've got a decent amount of info with references in there. I'm going to be working on the articles in my sandbox. I've also got a page in my sandbox for anything I can find for the new ABL. Without knowing about what knowledge you have, what you're interested in, that sort of thing, it's difficult for me to make good suggestions about specific articles. Here's a few ideas that should help point you in the right direction though.

I'm guessing you've got interest and knowledge about baseball, so looking at WikiProject Baseball would be a first start. The Article Improvement Drive section talks about what the suggested area to work on for the project is at the moment. Every so often that focus will change, so it might be worthwhile going back to that once in a while. Just below that is the Tasks section: it's got suggestions for things that need work done and links to the articles themselves, as well as a bunch of task forces.

The task forces are sort of like mini versions of WikiProject Baseball, that focus on specific areas within the project that might otherwise get left out, or where a number of people focus on so it lets them work things out for their task force without cluttering up the main project. If one of those task forces looks interesting for you, good idea to check them out - they usually have suggestions and ideas for things to work on. (If you've seen my user page, you'd see that I'm a part of the Australian baseball task force. We're pretty small, so we always welcome help. You'd be welcome to join, even if you don't have much info to put into the articles - we'd be happy to have someone who was willing to help with things like proof-reading articles, improving templates, and other tasks that aren't as "glamourous" but just as important.)

The WikiProject Baseball talk page usually has a bunch of things being discussed, sometimes with requests for help. If someone there is working on an article you're interested in, talk to them about ways you can help out.

A lot of what I've said about WikiProject Baseball applies to the other projects as well. Not all of them have the same type of structure, but they have the same basic idea of looking at articles in a specific topic area and trying to improve or maintain the existing ones, and creating new ones when and where needed. If you take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject, that will show you all the different projects out there. (Some are part of bigger projects, like Baseball is a part of Sport.)

Ultimatly it's up to you how and where you contribute. I hope this has helped you to come up with a few ideas and find something to work on.  Afaber012  (talk)  04:29, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

News from the diamond MLB: Trent Oeltjen became the 24th Australian-born player in Major League Baseball. Debuting for the Arizona Diamondbacks at PNC Park, he went 2 for 6 with a single, a solo home run, an RBI, 2 stolen bases, and even picked up an assist from left field. Australian Baseball League: 5 teams are so far confirmed for the first season of the new league: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Canberra has launched a bid for the sixth spot: Let's Do It Canberra 2009 AA World Cup: Australia finished 9th, beating the Czech Republic 15-0 and Russia 10-0 in their final classification games. Catcher Guy Edmonds was selected on the tournament's All Star team. 2009 World Cup: Australia has qualified for the final phase of the tournament for the third time, where they'll join CAN, CUB, NED, PUR, TPE, USA & VEN From the Editor Recently a new barnstar has been created for WikiProject Baseball, as a substitute for the {{Running Man Barnstar}}: {{The Baseball Barnstar}}. This has given me an idea for the newsletter. If any task force member gives a barnstar to someone for any work that relates to Australian baseball, or if any member receives a barnstar for any work they do, let me know on my talk page. Baseball Radio National

I hadn't, but now that you've pointed it out I've subscribed to the podcast and been listening to the first couple from this season. I just listen to the 3rd one from about a fortnight ago, and had a chuckle to myself when they were talking about the World Masters Games. The guys mentioned how the Triple D's from south east Melbourne had a result turned over because they used a pitcher for more than 4 innings: that game was against my dad's team, while I was acting as assistant coach/bullpen catcher. It was great being out at BOP, where you can still see the remnants of the Sydney 2000 signs on the outfield walls.  Afaber012  (talk)  10:35, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

News from the diamond Australian Baseball League: Canberra secures the 6th and final spot for the inaugural season of the reborn league, joining Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. The ABF has also launched the "Name Your ABL Team" competition, offering fans the chance to nominate the names and colour schemes of the six franchises. 2009 World Cup: Australia completed their run in the World Cup with their best ever finish in the tournament: 5th. Hi, Can you provide a link to the usage of this flag and it's peers out Wiki? I've had a quick look and can't find it. This looks like a WP:OI to me Gnevin (talk) 09:08, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

They're not used anywhere else. I created them myself, as an extension of what had been done for Rugby League - specifically their use in NRL articles. There used to be a template for their use, but in just searching for it now I can't seem to find it. Their use - by me at least - has been restricted to tables and other similar cases as a shorthand for the team involved, while avoiding the use of logos and emblems which would almost certainly not be free- or fair-use, besides being difficult to identify at small scales. The only differences between the pre-existing rugby league icons and my baseball ones are the shape (their's are square whereas mine are rectangular to mimic the display of many/most national flags) and the fact that their's are solid polygons of colours, while mine are gradient colours with a baseball symbol in the foreground. Unless I'm missing something in WP:OI or its just to late at night here for me to understand it fully, I don't see how it applies as a concern. The closest way I can see that they "illustrate or introduce an unpublished idea or argument" is that the baseball shape in them might be misconstrued as a tennis ball or some other object. If that's a serious concern, then I can go through them and update them to remove the baseball logo, but I honestly don't think its an issue.

By the way, I'm curious as to why you removed the Australian and New South Welsh flags from those templates. I mean, I don't think that they're critical to the templates, but at the same time I wasn't aware of them violating any Wikipedia policy, particularly seeing as they are the actual flags for Australia and New South Wales, not just something I've come up with.  Afaber012  (talk)  11:55, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

The Australian and New South Welsh flags where removed as they where not critical and while not policy WP:MOSICON#Encyclopaedic_purpose says Icons should not be added only because they look good, because aesthetics are in the eye of the beholder: one reader's harmless decoration may be another reader's distraction. As for the icons they illustrate an unpublished idea i.e that these teams using these logos . By the NRL icons do you mean File:Saintscolours.svg type of usage, if so this is common usage in RL outside wiki or at least that is what I was told Gnevin (talk) 12:11, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Those are the icons I mean. But what exactly do you mean by "common usage outside wiki"? Because though the colours themselves are certainly used, I'm not aware of the specific designs being in use anywhere either online or offline. Perhaps its different as far as [{Super League]] is concerned.

But my earlier point remains: we can't use the actual logos because of the copyright issues, but a graphic identifier in at least some if not all places I've used seems appropriate as a visual shorthand. A practice common not only to rugby league articles, but also to other sporting codes. To my way of thinking, if not a wiki-wide consensus then at least a consensus across several projects has already established that their use is appropriate.  Afaber012  (talk)  19:32, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

I asked before and was told they where common in England, if they aren't they also should be removed . A similar situation is WP:RUIRLFLAG ,where con was formed to use an invention but policy was against there use . These icons need to go Gnevin (talk) 20:08, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

But policy itself is fluid. Many of the policies out there have exceptions, where not all of those exceptions are listed with the policy itself. I've just been involved with a discussion about the use of disambiguaters and whether their current use in baseball articles is consistent with policy. In that example, the basic policy says that a term such as "(baseball player)" or "baseball coach" should be used, rather than just "(baseball)". However it was successfully argued that just using (baseball) was fine, given the desire for brief disambiguaters, that it conveyed sufficient information in the majority of cases, and that a more detailed term would be used in cases where there was more than one person with the same name that would otherwise fall under the term (baseball).

The colours themselves certainly do not represent an unpublished idea, and I honestly don't see how they could be construed to be doing so in the context in which they appear. Certainly no more so than their use in other areas that you've apparently already signed off on. The fans at games would have flags and banners incorporating the colours in a multitude of shapes, sizes, and designs. The designs I chose were an attempt to standardize them, and be representative of the teams' uniforms. Besides, the policy you're referring to seems to me to be open enough that it doesn't actually preclude the use of these icons, particularly given the various exemptions that are already in place for flags and such in sporting contexts in other parts of wiki policy.  Afaber012  (talk)  20:29, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

MOSICON doesn't preclude the use of icons it and WP:OR says we can't invent stuff. I've not contesting the colours or the baseball icon . It is when these are all put together to form a flag that the whole becomes OR. The fans of London Wasps would wave flags but we don't have an icon for them. If you think you can get OI changed then I suggest you try to do so but I doubt you'll be successful. Gnevin (talk) 20:42, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Assuming they were displayed at approximately the same size as the existing images are at the moment (I'd need to see whether it was worthwhile at that sort of resolution), an approximation of the various teams' uniform tops to be an acceptable replacement? Obviously it would not be an issue as far as original research is concerned, because there are numerous sources to verify them. The only concern I can think of would be whether or not there was a copyright/free-use/fair-use issue with them.  Afaber012  (talk)  12:53, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

Given that WP:ICONDECORATION says that icons can be purely decorative, as long as they have a useful purpose in providing visual cues or layout, I don't see a problem on that side. The provision of visual cues is the whole point of the icons that are there at the moment. The template that the icons get displayed through can be easily modified to set the alt text and link to nothing so that they are then purely decorative.  Afaber012  (talk)  19:03, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

Then ask WP:COPY if you can create these icons. However I'd still contend WP:ICONDECORATION applies as there is not need to provide visual cues here but I wouldn't press the issue . Can I remove these icons from the templates?Gnevin (talk) 19:25, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

I've updated the template they come from so that it no longer displays anything. Unless I'm mistaken, that will mean the images no longer appear anywhere. That way I can keep the same logical structures in place so that if and when new images are ready to go, they can be dropped in simply, and not have to worry about replacing the template in all the articles.  Afaber012  (talk)  08:42, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
