May 2017 edit

The page KindLink has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because the content of the page appeared to be purely promotion of its subject, and which was unlikely to be suitable for an article (or at best would need a fundamental rewrite). Wikipedia is not a medium for promotion of anything, whether a company, product, group, service, person, religious or political belief, or anything else. Hi JamesBWatson, I am sorry this was considered to be a promotional page. That was not the intent. KindLink has been featured in the news today (BBC Click programme and other features in News broadcasting). Since then, we have started receiving hundreds of requests for explanations and further information on the product - hence the decision to create a wiki page, as KindLink seems to be important to a considerable amount of people. All other giving platforms (Justgiving, globalgiving, localgiving, charity checkout etc) seems to have a page on wikipedia with similar contents and they have not been deleted.
I am very happy to edit the page according to your/other admins' suggestions if you think it is too much promotional. --AdrianoMancinelli (talk) 11:20, 13 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

KindLink page deletion edit

  • Hello, Adriano. It is normally best to answer any talk page messages on the page where that message was posted, because fragmenting discussions can cause confusion. However, in this case I am posting a fairly large chunk of information, which I hope will be helpful to you, and if so it will be more convenient for you on your talk page, so I am copying your message to here and answering it here.

Hi JamesBWatson, I am sorry this was considered to be a promotional page. That was not the intent. KindLink has been featured in the news today (BBC Click programme: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b08qlwlk/click-great-balls-of-fire). Since then, we have started receiving hundreds of requests for explanations and further information on the product - hence the decision to create a wiki page, as KindLink seems to be important to a considerable amount of people. The article was nowhere near as blatantly promotional as some that we get, but it did read very clearly as though it was written in order to give the reader the impression that KindLink is a noble cause that deserves support, whereas Wikipedia policy is that an article must be a neutral account, giving no indication that the writers of the article holds any opinion about the subject, whether favourable unfavourable or neutral.
It is natural for a new editor to assume that whatever can be seen in existing articles must be acceptable, but that is in fact a mistake. The English language Wikipedia has nearly five and a half million articles, over thirty million registered editors (of whom hundreds of thousands have edited fairly recently) and nobody knows how many people who have edited without registering an account. The vast majority of those editors edit only briefly or sporadically, and never become fully acquainted with Wikipedia policies. We have just 1259 administrators (not all of whom are very active) and I would guess a few thousand experienced editors who contribute significantly to the work of cleaning up articles with problems. That being so, there are many articles which do not comply with Wikipedia standards which escape attention for a long time. I have had a quick look at some of the other articles you mention, and you are right: they do indeed contain content which is somewhat promotional. In my quick look I did not see anything quite as clearly promotional as some of the text you posted, such as saying that KindLink "gives charities the tools to be more efficient and transparent", but some of what I saw was not a lot better. I will try to remember to come back and have a more thorough look at them when I have time, and see what needs to be done about them.
Your use of the word "we", together with other things, indicates that you are personally involved in KindLink, in which case Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines indicate that you should not be creating an article on the subject. One of the main reasons for that is that it can be very difficult for someone closely involved with an organisation to stand back and see how his or her writing about it will look from the detached perspective of an outside observer, with the result that many editors in that situation sincerely do not see what they write as promotional or partisan, even when it looks unambiguously like that to others. I strongly recommend looking at the conflict of interest guidelines.
I have restored the article and move it to a draft at Draft:KindLink. You can then work on it there, and when you think it is ready you can click the link "Submit your draft for review!" so that it will be reviewed by an experienced editor, who will either accept it as an article or else give you some information on what needs to be done to make it suitable. You need to think very carefully about how it will read to an outsider, and make sure that it does not give the impression of having been written by someone who thinks that KindLink is a good thing. (Even more importantly, of course, it must not give the impression of having been written by someone who thinks that KindLink is a bad thing, but obviously you won't do that.)
I am also posting, below, a message which contains links to various policies, guidelines, and information pages. Don't try to read them all, as there is far too much there to take in, but do look at any which you think may be useful to your current needs, and of course you can always come back to look at more of them if you need to in the future.
