  Please refrain from making unconstructive edits to Wikipedia, as you did at Judith Butler. Your edits appear to constitute vandalism and have been reverted. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. Repeated vandalism may result in the loss of editing privileges. Thank you. DanielRigal (talk) 13:54, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

I assume that you are already well aware that non-binary people often use singular they as a personal pronoun. As such, your attempt to kvetch on Talk:Judith Butler can only be interpreted as intentionality disruptive, as well as highly disrespectful. As it served no valid purpose, it has been removed. Any continued disruption along these lines will lead to escalating warnings and could eventually result in you being blocked from editing. --DanielRigal (talk) 14:02, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
I am aware that encylopaedias are about objective truth, and the simple fact is that Judith Butler is female.
The idea that “non-binary” is even a thing is a politically controversial idea and scientifically unsupported.
Pronouns are descriptive labels that are applied, not personal possessions that are taken.
Your assertions are no more than a personal opinion and I do not appreciate being told off or patronised. Actualjc (talk) 20:06, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Moreover, that page, with all its “their” and “they” is grammatically incredibly shoddy.
Known individual people have never been referred to as “they” or “them” until the last few years. This is a fad an Wikipedia should be above it. Actualjc (talk) 20:08, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
(Redacted)
Do you have *any* idea how absurd you sound? Actualjc (talk) 20:13, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
One final point: gender critical beliefs are a protected belief category in the UK, where both you and I reside.
As a minimum, that serves to show that this matter is far less settled that you seem to think and that you have substantially over-reached. Actualjc (talk) 20:16, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
This isn't about any of that. This is about you vandalising an article to misgender a living subject. You must not do that again. DanielRigal (talk) 20:17, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
There is no such thing as “misgendering”. It is a politically charged, invented concept with no basis in reality. Actualjc (talk) 20:19, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
This is not your decision to make. You do not get to tell Butler (or Wikipieda) what their gender or pronouns are any more than I get to tell you what your gender or pronouns are. Singular they has been used in the English language for hundreds of years The warning stands. You can believe whatever you like but any further article vandalism will is very likely to lead to sanctions. DanielRigal (talk) 20:15, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
“She” is for women, “He” is for men. It really is that simple.
Pronouns are applied, they are not owned. Actualjc (talk) 20:17, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
I am not going to debate Butler's identity with you. That is not something you have any right to opine on. DanielRigal (talk) 20:18, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
This is not about her identity, it is about her sex. (Redacted). Actualjc (talk) 20:19, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
I don't know your gender but, assuming that I did, how would you like it if I loudly and obnoxiously made a point of referring to you by the wrong gender? You would find that objectionable, and you would be right to do so. I don't get to do that to you and you don't get to do that to anybody else. DanielRigal (talk) 20:23, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
BTW, I have redacted your comment above about Butler as potentially defamatory. --DanielRigal (talk) 20:16, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
What is defamatory? Actualjc (talk) 20:18, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Calling a woman a woman is not defamatory. Actualjc (talk) 20:20, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Misgendering is potentially defamatory. Anyway, lets make this official:
  Please do not change the personal pronouns of individuals in articles, as you did to Judith Butler. Wikipedia refers to all people, including transgender and nonbinary people, by the pronouns they have most recently requested for themselves; this applies to all phases of their lives, unless they have requested otherwise. Your edits could be interpreted as vandalism and have been reverted; repeatedly adding incorrect pronouns may result in a loss of editing privileges. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. DanielRigal (talk) 20:20, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

  Please stop your disruptive editing.

If you continue to disrupt Wikipedia, as you did at User talk:Actualjc, you may be blocked from editing. DanielRigal (talk) 20:46, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Introduction to contentious topics

edit

You have recently edited a page related to gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.
