Wirral Grammar

Sorry, I only finished school in August 2006 - so in terms of earlier history I can't be much help. Most of my contributions to that article have been based on data that I either experienced in school, heard from hearsay (e.g. the Technology Blocks, which were made of Spitfire scrap and therefore once nicknamed the Spitfire Blocks - that, I heard from an older teacher when they were being demolished), or read in the History (which I remember pieces of). Also, I didn't have Dr Gopsill for German - I had Frau Flather (though I heard plenty about Gopsill) (German was discontinued in my last few years there). What other members of staff do you know and what was Mrs Flather like? Could you name some more. Also, what had you heard about Dr Gopsill. Also, which teaching room did Mrs Flather have? Could you tell me anything more you know about the languages department.

Okay.

Mrs Maureen Flather. Rather cold, strict. Was close to retirement when I had her in Year 8 and 9 (had taught my mother in the early 70s at Ellesmere Port Grammar for Girls). Kept the class in control. Was a good German Teacher. Also taught some French. She taught in Room 13, on the language corridor.

Mr AS Davies. Was Head of French until something like Aug 2004. Students compared him to postman pat (due to his glasses). Taught in room 12.

Mr Earnshaw. Deputy Head, also taught French.

Mrs Craze. French teacher. Taught in room 14.

Dr Gopsill. Was a German and French teacher. The rumours weren't good: apparently, he spent most of his lessons talking about Chinese, Russian, his holidays abroad, his academic career. Students sometimes complained that he taught them very little German. It was whispered that the Head removed German from the curriculum just to get rid of him: he apparently complained about this. Taught in room 10.

Mrs Adlard. Taught French, was also the librarian. Retired at end of 05-06 school year. The other language teachers would joke about her size (very small) and temper (very large and fierce). Was responsible for a lot of language department admin prior to retirement of Mr Davies.

Mr Davies replaced by an outsider, Mr Beeley. New Spanish teacher was Mrs Jubb, who took over room 13.

What did Mrs Flather look like, anything like Mrs Adlard?

Also, do you know more about Dr Gopsill, and also about the other languages taught in the history of the school, e.g. Russian and Spanish taught to pupils who weren't good enough to be taught Latin. Do you know when Latin and Classics were taken off the curriculum?
