November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have reached the end of our fourth backlog elimination drive. Thanks to all who participated. Stats GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive graphs 58 people signed up for this drive. Of these, 48 people participated in the drive. Although we did not eliminate the months we planned to (January, February, and March 2009; and August, September, and October 2010), we did reduce the backlog by 627 articles (11.2%), which was over our goal of 10%. 49 awards will go out to 33 of 48 participants. Check out the complete list of barnstar winners here. Barnstars If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the September 2010 backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering these barnstars within the next couple of weeks. Wait, what?

You closed a GAR as keep when there were non-free sound files in the article without rationales, when the issue had been pointed out, claiming that the issue was resolved? Have I missed something? J Milburn (talk) 17:10, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

There were fair-use rationales. You were right that the audio files needed to satisfy criteria 6a, but I and another reviewer believed it did. The GAR was up for over 6 weeks, 3 and a half of which without any serious debate or disagreement. At worst it could have been closed as no consensus (which means it keeps GA), but as the GAR had stalled out it needed to be closed and there did not seem to be a compelling argument or consensus to delist. There were not rationales for that use, there were rationales for other uses. Please refamiliarise yourself with the non-free content criteria- NFCC#10c requires "The name of each article (a link to each article is also recommended) in which fair use is claimed for the item, and a separate, specific fair-use rationale for each use of the item, as explained at Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline." Sorry if it seems I'm drumming out the point, but a recent disagreement showed that the distiction is not as clear as I thought it was. The article really should have been delisted- the misuse of the sound files was a serious problem whether or not someone disagreed that it was, and it was something that had not been fixed, and was not even under discussion. I also don't want to come off as contentious here, because I believe I may not understand what you are trying to say. I believe both audio files in the article satisfy NFCC#10c. the article links to the file page, which in turn links back to the article. The music copyright license template is there, as well as a filled-out rationale for the use of the clip, which seems consistent with why it is included in the article. For the sake of comparison, I refer to David Bowie, which may be considered a peer article of sorts to Pink Floyd. This article was promoted to FA very recently, and contains audio files with fair use rationales. (the "David Bowie - Space Oddity.ogg" file, for example) Aside from perhaps more detail on the source and a slightly better explanation, I did not notice a significant difference between the presumably-accepted rationale used in the audio files for that recently-promoted FA article, and the rationales used for the audio files in Pink Floyd. If there's something I'm not noticing here, please feel free to point it out. Aaron north (T/C) 07:41, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, the two on the page now do- at the time of closing, there were around ten on the page, most of which did not satisfy 10c, as the rationales they did have were for other articles. You are right, I just looked back at an old version of the article when it was kept and some of the sound files did not have a decent rationale beyond "to illustrate the article", which is clearly insufficient. At a minimum the editors should have been told to improve the rationale to prevent the article from losing GA-status. As you say, it is academic now, because someone cleaned the article up after-the-fact to comply with the GA standard. GOCE drive news

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats. Participation GOCE January 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now. Progress report We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Joran van der Sloot

Hello, thank you for your past GA review of Joran van der Sloot. I was not opposed to your instability assessment as the case was a top headline in the news at the time. However, the case appears to have ground to a halt and it has also since been revealed that Peru has the right to detain a suspect for questioning for 18 months (!) and does not guarantee the right to a speedy trial. As there appears to be no stability problems to content disputes, would you be opposed if I resubmitted this for GA review though it may be years before the commencement of a trial? I would be happy to take it for a round through WP:PR if you prefer. Cheers. KimChee (talk) 19:12, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

I would not be opposed to a resubmission. I quickly researched this and you appear to be correct, this could take an extraordinary amount of time (by american standards) before a significant update is made. Given that it may take over a year before a trial even begins, the argument that the article is "unstable" is harder to defend. I cant re-review it since I was involved in the first review, but I will add a comment to my review summarizing this. Also, the next reviewer may decide to fail it anyway for the same reason or may decide to hold/fail it for other reasons since I didn't give it a full review, but given the circumstances, I no longer believe you should be forced to wait until the conclusion of the trial. If this article were to be judged a good article before the trial though, it will need to be kept up-to-date under the good article criteria when the story does develop further or it may lose GA status on a reassessment. GOCE January Backlog elimination drive conclusion

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated. Statistics 54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated. One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%. Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue. Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. This article counts as six 5000-K articles, and Chaosdruid wins the "most 5000-K articles" leaderboard category. Way to go! A complete list of individual results is here. GOCE drive invitation

Here's the mid-drive newsletter. Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter. Participation Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months. Progress report During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. GOCE July 2012 Copy Edit Drive

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their July 2012 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on July 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on July 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to eliminate the articles tagged in April, May and June 2011 from the queue and to complete all requests placed before the end of June. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 6 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in April–June 2011", and "Longest article". It's a smaller group than last drive, but we're making good progress. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Lfstevens continues to carry most of the weight, having edited 360 articles and over a quarter of a million words already. Thanks to all who have participated! WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. This message is directed to users who have reviewed over 15 Good article nominations and are not part of WikiProject Good articles (the first message I sent out went to only WikiProject members). So for those who haven't heard about the Recruitment Centre yet, you may be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around it (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers: Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with (at the time this message was sent out, 2 recruiters have volunteered), the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available". Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497). Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
