May 2020 edit

Hello, I'm Nyook. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Deepak Rao, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at the tutorial on citing sources. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Nyook 20:37, 3 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi both, so the problem is that all of the sources on his page are unverified and unreliable, yet presented as fact. All citations on his page are to his own websites. I am part of the watchdog community Bullshido.com that verifies fraudulent rankings for martial arts practitioners. Each of the edits that I made simply state that there is no proof whatsoever of any of his claims. The appropriate citation is his own website itself, which has no evidence to support any of the presented claims. Additionally, I'm not sure how I would site the fact that the academy he claims rank in BJJ under does not exist. I have verified such information with 6th degree blackbelt in BJJ (highest ranking BJJ blackbelt in France and 6 time world champion). 93.140.16.202 (talk) 20:55, 3 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. At a glance, the sources on this article seem to be fairly comprehensive, but if his credibility has been challenged then that would definitely be a fact worth including in the article. Are there any credible sources detailing the issues with his claims that you could use to make this more neutral? Akakievich (talk) 20:59, 3 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Certainly, for example all the information listed here: https://www.bullshido.net/forums/forum/main-discussion-forums/ymas/4595579-bjj-mumbai-definitely-bullshido https://www.reddit.com/r/bjj/comments/fmxx7c/fake_rickson_gracie_black_belt/ https://www.reddit.com/r/bjj/comments/fmtra9/fake_rickson_gracie_black_belt/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

or the fact that half of the cited sources he listed no longer even have websites attached to them as they were all fake websites he created to support his claims. Or that none of the claims on his website have any sources. Or the fact that the location he claims to have trained BJJ in does not have any gym facilities on that entire stretch of road in Paris, and never has. Many more discrepancies. The fact that he managed to make his own Wikipedia page and present all of these claims using nothing but his own websites as sources is simply amazing to me. 93.140.16.202 (talk) 21:17, 3 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

I agree that this is concerning - thank you for taking the time to point this out. Because this is a biography of a living person, there are quite strict standards regarding the sourcing of material, so you will have to work quite methodically. Forums and Reddit don't really constitute reliable sources in their own right. If you'd like to work on the page, here's what I would suggest: start by removing highly dubious claims that do not have a source, and adding any missing information that does. You may also be justified in removing sources published by Deepak Rao himself, if these are not corroborated by any others. The tone of the article also reads like it was written to promote Deepak Rao, so you could alter that to make it more encyclopaedic. Remember to maintain a neutral point of view while editing. Information about biographies on Wikipedia is available here: WP:BOLP. Help, advice and feedback from other Wikipedia editors is available here: WP:Teahouse. Feel free to post on my talk page if you have more questions, though I'm quite inexperienced myself so your best bet is probably asking at the Teahouse. Thanks for contributing to Wikipedia! No problem, anybody who is watching your talk page will see what's written here, but it can sometimes get lost in the noise. If you want a specific person's attention, the best thing to do is to go onto their talk page and let them know, or simply to ping them like this: {{ping|username}} - but watch out! If you don't sign your comments (like this: ~~~~), the ping won't go through and the user won't be notified. Akakievich (talk) 21:27, 3 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
