Thanks for DYK support re: The Mel Blanc Show

edit

I just read your comments regarding my DYK nomination from The Mel Blanc Show. Thank you! I appreciate your support as I continue to learn more about working with Wikipedia. Eddie Blick (talk) 13:59, 3 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yes, congratulations. Since I hadn't really made any significant contributions to the article or the DYK nom, I reviewed that one, and it was promoted to mainspace exposure almost immediately, as opposed to Saint which had been sitting, approved, for a long time before it was put on mainspace. Meanwhile Joy just sits there in limbo, I commented there to hopefully help move it along. However, two DYKs in two days, great job, and congratulations! 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 14:03, 3 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

I am amazed at -- and appreciative of -- having two DYK items in two days! I have another article that is about ready to post (probably today). I'll add a note here to let you know when it is posted. Eddie Blick (talk) 14:17, 3 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

The Dreft Star Playhouse

edit

I have posted an article about The Dreft Star Playhouse. It's not very long because I couldn't find many sources for it. Even so, I think little-known old-time radio shows should be included on Wikipedia. Eddie Blick (talk) 18:24, 3 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Well, at 1600 charachters of prose text it is still eligible for DYK. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 19:23, 3 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hmmm ... I'll see what I can come up with.Eddie Blick (talk) 21:30, 3 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

A question

edit

Does Wikipedia offer a way of creating something akin to a discussion group wherein people with a shared interest could discuss that interest? I'm thinking that if something like that were available for people interested in old-time radio, participants could discuss topics for new articles and needs for beefing up weak existing articles. We could also discuss reference materials (especially those that are available via the Internet), and in particular share new resources that we discover.

Soon after joining Wikipedia, I joined something called a Tea Room, but I haven't been active in it because most of the topics didn't interest me (or I didn't know enough about them to contribute), but something specialized like a group focused on OTR could be beneficial for all who participate, perhaps allowing participants to coordinate efforts on some projects.

This may be outside your field of expertise, but you have been so helpful in the past that I thought I would ask. Eddie Blick (talk) 21:30, 3 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Eddie, sorry I've been irresponsive lately. I'm in the process of moving across the country, so likely won't be much help for the next month. Wikipedia does have "Wikiprojects." You'll notice I've added "WikiProject Radio" to several of the pages you've created. Some of these projects are active, some are mostly dormant, but that is where I'd start. I'm aware of no useful discussion areas regarding Wikipedia, outside Wikipedia. The ones I know of have all devolved into anti-administrator gripe sessions. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 13:48, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look into that. Best wishes as you move across the country. Having been involved in several moves myself (but none recently), I know how difficult and time-consuming the process can be. I'm still working on OTR-related articles. I have one about Crime Doctor that I will probably post today, and I've started research on Famous Jury Trials. The two programs are barely mentioned in the existing articles Crime Doctor (film), Crime Doctor (character) and the Famous Jury Trials TV show.

16:47:20, 4 July 2014 review of submission by PeakSales

edit

Hi there, I think I made the required revisions to the article. If they still do not meet Wikipedia's requirements, will I be penalized? Is there a limited number of draft submission I can make or is it a max of 3?

Thanks. PeakSales (talk) 16:47, 4 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

First, I apologize for the delay in responding, I haven't been able to edit here much, busy in real life and all that.
There is no limit to the number of drafts that can be submitted. This still reads like a "how-to" guide to me, and the sources don't necessarily support the statements. For instance, your article says "The sales recruiting process is a six step method..." Says who? I'll bet there are people who say it is a 5-step process, or other recruiters who have an 8-step process. However, I do see a couple of issues for which you could be "penalized", as in blocked and made incapbable of editing here at all. One of your sources given is "www.peaksalesrecruiting.com". Given your user name, you have a clear conflilct of interest. Please carefully read the conflict of interest guidelines. This would likely be considered spam, and as such is a really, really bad idea. You also need to change your user name ASAP, because a Wikipedia ID belongs to an individual, and is not allowed to represent a group or entity (see WP:GROUPNAME). I hope that is of assistance to you. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 14:36, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks re: 1) Dick Joy DYK and 2) Blanc article

edit

Today's DYK has the Dick Joy item. I read the exchange that went on behind the scenes, and I thank you for your support in that discussion. Also, I just saw in the history of The Mel Blanc Show page that someone had deleted the log in "External links" and you restored it. Thanks for doing that, too! I don't know why someone considered that page to be spam.

Elmo Tanner

edit

From my reading of the advertisement, he wasn't strictly "selling Datsuns," but rather was a disc jockey for radio station WILZ making promotional appearances at the Datsun dealership. (So I moved the link up a bit to support the statement that he was working as a DJ at WILZ.) Although I doubt it, I suppose it's possible that he was working both as a DJ at WILZ and as a car salesman at the Datsun dealership at the same time. And the ad doesn't say that he'll be there for one or more specific appearances only, but will "give each person who drops by to test drive a DATSUN" a copy of his record. Still, while it's not terribly clear, I don't think that qualifies him as a car salesman. It just struck me as being a little misleading, as if he had gone from being a world famous recording artist to a DJ at a local AM station to a car salesman at a Datsun dealership. (It kind of sounds like a downward spiral, leaving one to expect his next position to be a Walmart greeter, and then a homeless person living in an empty large appliance carton under the Interstate!) But I agree, it's an interesting tidbit -- perhaps it should be added back in to make it clear that he was making promotional appearances while still working as a DJ. Jhw57 (talk) 14:30, 22 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ah, I see what happened, the google URLs do not work, so you removed the reference. I found it again [1], which explicitly states he was working for the dealership. Thanks for your reply and assistance, truly appreciated. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 15:50, 22 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Wow, so he did actually move from being a radio DJ to being a car salesman! Great research work -- always a delight to see that kind of effort here -- thanks for clearing it up! Jhw57 (talk) 11:55, 23 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

OTR Resources Page Created

edit

I know that you are on a break from Wikipedia, but I'm posting this note anyway, so that it will be awaiting you the next time you check in. I have created a page, User:Teblick/Online Resources for Old-Time Radio Research, that I hope will be useful to other people who are interested in research related to old-time radio. When you have time, I would appreciate your feedback about the page. Also, do you know of any better place to put it than in my user space? It doesn't qualify as a Wikipedia article, so I don't know where else to put it. Eddie Blick (talk) 01:49, 29 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Sweet! Break isn't from wiki-stress or anything of the sort, but the fact that I am going to be very busy for the next four weeks or so with several real-life projects, not the least is moving a couple thousand miles. That is a great resource, and hats off to you for creating it! 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 02:41, 29 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

James Gleason as Hopalong Cassidy?

edit

I remember that you commented about an interest in James Gleason and someone else on radio, but I was unsuccessful in finding anything about the program. Therefore, I thought about you when I spotted a page in a 1935 issue of Motion Picture Daily that indicated that James Gleason would star as Hopalong Cassidy. I didn't know whether you were aware that he had that role. See http://archive.org/stream/motionpicturedai38unse#page/n95/mode/2up Eddie Blick (talk) 00:32, 9 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Gregory XVII Edit

edit

It wasn't a POINTy edit, but a disruptive edit representing a claim that the papacy had been seized. Anyway, the edit and the move have been reverted. If they happen again, I will request a block. Robert McClenon (talk) 20:23, 2 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

You are correct, my terminology was wrong. It was a highly POV edit, but it would seem he wasn't trying to disrupt wikipedia, but that he was trying to "improve" it to represent THE TRUTH. Thanks, and thanks for reverting back to the original name, I was unable to undo the page move over the redirect. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 20:27, 2 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
PS I'm not sure the Gregory XVII redirect is a bad idea. It seems likely that someone of a particular persuasion (or who has read an article by someone of that persuasion) would search under that term. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions)

The Limeliters

edit

Hi, as far as I can retrace it you added to the article that John Dalia supported the group. Recently an anonymous contributor changed that to John David. This is the first and only contribution of this ip-address. It seems typically a sort of vandalism to insert someone's own name in an article, so I reverted it. However, I can not find anything about a John Dalia on the internet. Could you look at it, please. Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 09:21, 17 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately, I no longer have access to that book (borrowed from the library, and I've moved 1500 miles away since.) what if people edit with a one sided ideology about something with giving reference from one of theirs pages? does this not violate your opinion of neutrality ? unsigned comment from user:MaaNii Champ on 23:54, 25 November 2014

The situation you state is not good, but what you removed is multiple, published sources. If you believe these books are not reliable (and many of these are from academic sources, not personal websites or blogs) you'll need to discuss on the talk page. I don't see anything particularly POV about your edit, they may be factually correct, but you provided no sources whatsoever to support your assertions. Without sources, how can someone (like me, for instance) who has no knowledge about the subject check to see if the information presented is correct? I most cordially invite you to spend some time reading with Wikipedia policies on referencing and neutrality. If you have any questions about these policies, please feel free to contact me any time.
