Amtrak paint schemes edit

Please stop adding trivia like minor variations to the article. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia - a general-purpose reference source - not a railfan guide nor a scale modeling guide. The descriptions in this article are only intended to give the basic description of the various paint schemes; they should not include every single detail. If you wish to have more detailed discussion of paint schemes, then transit.wiki may be a better place to do it. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 03:03, 10 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

I see where you're coming from, but the unfortunate thing is many use Wikipedia to cite sources on Amtrak paint schemes. I want to make the article informative, as Matt Donnelly would. Since the idea of Phase IVb being Phase VI is so controversial, I wanted to at least include something that would stop an argument for someone disregarding the official source. That was the stripe variation which is available in the official guide. Matt wanted this article to be informative, only to have his edits reversed.
I understand that you're trying to make it informative, but Wikipedia is fundamentally not the place to add the level of information that railfans (especially those trying to make accurate scale models) are looking for. That's a perpetual problem on Wikipedia, and not just with railroad articles. Minor details like slightly different stripe patterns are not going to be relevant to the average reader, who's here wondering "why did the locomotive on my train look different today"?
It would be very helpful if Matt can release that guide officially on the Amtrak website - that makes it a much more stable source. I really appreciate his efforts to improve the quality of information available on Amtrak paint schemes, and the creation of that guide is the first truly good source that's been made. (Without such a source, his edits were reverted - even though they turned out to be correct - because reliable sources are necessary.) Pi.1415926535 (talk) 05:39, 10 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
I've tried to get Matt to release the guide, but it's of low priority, according to him. I emailed him but perhaps another emailing him at donnelm@amtrak.com will get him to up the priority. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.138.47.66 (talk) 15:46, 11 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
