IP editing -- context

edit

we were chatting at WP:Teahouse I was curious about the context/reasoning for IP editing on wikipedia e.g. why do it legitimately , are there risks with normal editing, etc.

Also how does one retain a stable IP? do you do you edit from a VPN or static IP host somewhere? Tonymetz (talk) 17:41, 28 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

I don't retain a static IP, @Tonymetz, it changes at the whim of fate and whatever service provider I'm currently using. I don't mind. For a semi-humorous explanation of why I prefer it, see Association of Good Faith Wikipedians Who Remain Unregistered on Principle. In a few months, IP masking is going to be implemented (see here) which may or may not change how I and a few other long-term IP editors interact with Wikipedia. We shall see! 57.140.16.57 (talk) 17:48, 28 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I'm AntiDionysius. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (United States), but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. AntiDionysius (talk) 18:37, 5 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

If this is a shared IP address, and you did not make the edits referred to above, consider creating an account for yourself or logging in with an existing account so that you can avoid further irrelevant notices.
