IKUKU SETTLEMENT IN THE HEART OF OMPUNDJA VILLAGE

The Ikuku settlement is located in the heart Ompundja is a Village which is made up of roughly 4 423 inhabitants, the majority of which are oshikwambi speaking and followers of the Christian faith the Evangelical church to be specific. It is situated in the Oshana Region of Namibia. Ompundja is made up of smaller settlements the prominant of which is Ikuku, the Ikuku settlement has produced alot of prominant citizens one of which is Ambasodor Monica Nashandi. Ompundja village was originally named after a local animal, the Impala (okapundja) these interesting bucks are believed to have been the first inhabitants of the area hence the village being named after them. Ompundja is said to have been found by hunters who used to frequent the village due to its immense population of impalas in the 1910s, this hunters started putting up structures which they would use for shelter during their hunting expeditions to the area and further started to settle in the area due to its rich fauna and flora. The name Ompundja was given to it by one of Ikuku's first inhabitants, a man by the name of KuKu Kapolo KaNuujoma.

History

The name Ompundja came from an animal that used to vastly populate the area in the 1910’s, the impala.

Development and infrastructure

Ompundja is slowly getting development and has in recent years seen the electrification of numerous homes the area, tap water which was previously only found at water points have now been put in homes. The village is more advanced compared to other villages in the areas as it has its own clinic, forestry project, and a combined school. Ompundja can be said to be very much self-dependent as they have tractors and a mahangu pounding mill within the village, There are also many local shops and mini markets which cater for the day to day needs of the inhabitants.

Climate

Ompundja has a semi-arid climate (BSh, according to the Köppen climate classification), with hot summers and relatively mild winters (with warm days and cool nights). The average annual precipitation is 472 mm (19 in), with most rainfall occurring mainly during summer.
