WikiCup 2018 September newsletter

edit

The fourth round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The eight users who made it to the final round had to score a minimum of 422 points to qualify, with the top score in the round being 4869 points. The leaders in round 4 were:

  •   Courcelles scored a magnificent 4869 points, with 92 good articles on Olympics-related themes. Courcelles' bonus points alone exceeded the total score of any of the other contestants!
  •   Kees08 was second with 1155 points, including a high-scoring featured article for Neil Armstrong, two good topics and some Olympics-related good articles.
  •   Cas Liber, with 1066 points, was in third place this round, with two featured articles and a good article, all on natural history topics.
  • Other contestants who qualified for the final round were   Nova Crystallis,   Iazyges,   SounderBruce,   Kosack and   Ceranthor.

During round four, 6 featured articles and 164 good articles were promoted by WikiCup contestants, 13 articles were included in good topics and 143 good article reviews were performed. There were also 10 "in the news" contributions on the main page and 53 "did you knows". Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck, and let the best editor win! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Godot13, Sturmvogel 66, Vanamonde and Cwmhiraeth. @Umar shahid: Hello! Glad to see that you want to learn the ways of writing Wikipedia. I have reviewed some of your recent edits and have seen that you are fairly adapt with writing and have a relatively healthy edit count of >200 edits. Currently your main issues are only grammar and wiki text both of which can be easily learnt. I honestly do not feel that you require adoption but if you still wish to continue I am ok with that. 1.02 editor (C651 set 217/218) 06:33, 23 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

@郑州路知: Please read WP:TRIVIA and WP:NOTAGUIDE. Most London station articles do not have this anyway. Not all articles currently follow the Manual of style so please bear in mind that you may encounter articles like this. VincentLUFan (talk) (Kenton!) 10:53, 25 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

About recent edits on Zhengzhou East railway station

edit

Hey, I've noticed the recent edits on Zhengzhou East railway station about the station layout section. I don't think the station layout fails the WP:NOTGUIDE or WP:TRIVIA. It is NOT a guide and just shows the platform layout in a more direct way than word descriptions only. As you can see, many train station related articles on Wikipedia have such a section. Windmemories

@Windmemories: hi thanks for bringing this up. From what I interpret, the amount of platforms and services in a particular station should be included, but the platform layout, wether in a graphic or word form, should not be included, as it can be considered as trivia. A discussion at Wikipedia talk:SGpedians’ notice board/2018 archive pointed out a few important facts such as that Wikipedia is not a travel guide (WP:NOTGUIDE), such information can be found on Operators websites (not sure for china), and that Wikipedia does not cater for tourists. Also, many other metros also are going to have the station layouts removed soon or have them already removed (Taipei Metro is an example) and just so happen that I was assessing that particular article when I came across the station layout. Please do share your insights on this matter I am most delighted to hear from you. 1.02 editor (C651 set 217/218) 09:14, 3 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
Similarly, the detailed timetable at Zhengzhou–Shenzhen high-speed train should not be there, for the same reasons as above. 1.02 editor (C651 set 217/218) 09:27, 3 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
@1.02 editor: Thanks for discussing. I do agree that the too detailed information such as timetables can be regarded as trivia and I'm going to replace them. From my point of view, however, I still think station layout section should be kept. It is not only for tourists as a travel guide (in China the CR and metro systems of many cities do not offer such info on their websites), but also can be good information for readers that are interested in related topics. -- Windmemories 10:39, 3 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Windmemories: I have started a discussion at WT:TWP maybe we can move this discussion there? 1.02 editor (C651 set 217/218) 11:55, 3 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

@1.02 editor: OK, let's put that aside. By the way, I've reverted your edit on the number of platforms. I think it's common knowledge that one island platform should be counted as two platforms.-- Windmemories 01:36, 5 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Windmemories: thanks for the information but I think it will be unfair to call this 'common knowledge'. 1.02 editor (C651 set 217/218) 05:13, 5 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

@郑州路知: 不要这样说啦,维基百科是自由编辑的,有不同意见也很正常,可以按规则就事论事来讨论,没必要进行人身攻击,更不要上升到国家和民族的层面。It's common to have dissents and we can follow the rules to deal with that. Personal attacks are no good in reaching an agreement.--Windmemories (talk) 02:59, 29 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Well, I'm really sorry for saying that. In China, you know, there're some rules limiting us Chinese viewing foreign websites for unknown reasons.(Maybe someone knows) For example, we can't use apps like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and so on without VPN. Also, it seems that having discussion with others who are against your own idea is the best way to work out the problem. Again, I'm really sorry for what I've done. (A good news is that Zhengzhou Metro Line 5 has already begun its test run. It will be open maybe in April. ) 郑州路知 (talk) 06:38, 30 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

@郑州路知: Well that's true. I have a few friends who lived in China told me about the app bans. But oh, I've never heard about the latter culture before lol. And wow China metro development is really speeeeeeeeeeedy. VincentLUFan (talk) (Kenton!) 06:57, 1 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Vincent60030:Well,

that's all right. Last year, there were too many cities planning metro constructions,so the State Council of People's Republic of China put on a limit about reporting constructions.(In China, we should report to the council before starting constructing.) Also there's a saying describes Shanghai is that'It's almost empty under Shanghai'(for too many metro stations and tunnles). However, Shanghai is still continuing its metro contructions. 郑州路知 (talk) 09:04, 3 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

DYK for Bishan tunnel flooding

edit

On 10 October 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Bishan tunnel flooding, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the flooding of a tunnel on the Singapore MRT, causing more than S$2 million in damages, was blamed on falsified maintenance records? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Bishan tunnel flooding. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Bishan tunnel flooding), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Wiki Adoption Enquiry

Hey there! I'm interested in a wiki adoption. What do you generally do though for the adoption thing? Btw I'm a trains fanatic too XD VincentLUFan (talk) (Kenton!) 10:54, 13 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Vincent60030: Hi, wiki adoptions are generally for new users to learn the ropes of Wikipedia, and I see from your userpage that you have been contributing here for almost 5 years. If you do require help maybe the teahouse would be a better place. Thanks 1.02 editor (C651 set 217/218) 07:49, 14 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Actually I was doing on and off editing throughout the almost 5 years xD but alright i’ll consider the teahouse. Do you edit Singapore train articles? VincentLUFan (talk) (Kenton!) 10:18, 14 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Vincent60030: yeah most of my edits come from articles related to trains in Singapore but I have been editing many other articles too. Nowadays I mostly just do watchlist patrolling since I have no motivation to create content. 1.02 editor (C651 set 217/218) 12:44, 14 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
I see. For me I have kind of a struggle for Malaysian train articles since resources are quite limited. So far I've edited mainly the SBK line article but stopped quite a while too. I went on (and actually started off with) to London train station articles. They are really interesting :) My level of fanatism: remembering all stations on Singapore MRT huehue VincentLUFan (talk) (Kenton!) 12:47, 14 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Requesting formal adoption and education

edit

Greetings,
I'm Redactyll, and I'd like to be adopted formally by you. I am very new to the project, with only around two thousand edits. I also have only been here for two months. Since I only have around two thousand edits, and only about two months of experience, I'd like to get a formal adoption so that I may become further immersed in the ways of Wikipedia. I'm currently a rollbacker, pending changes reviewer, and tool developer, as well as a XCON user. However, one thing to keep in mind before adopting me are that I am extremely inexperienced with Wikipedia. If you're willing to adopt a complete "newbie" then I'm the person for you. I wish to learn about Wikipedia on a deeper level, and to gain formal training and learning experience. If you would like to help teach another adoptee the ropes, then I'd appreciate it if you could adopt and teach me.
Best regards, Redactyll Letsa taco 'bou it, son! 22:42, 25 December 2018 (UTC) at 22:42, 25 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
