Bots

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. mistake?

Why did you archive threads that were not quite 14 days old?

[1]

Some threads' last comments were at least June 10.96.52.0.249 (talk) 20:30, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

At Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Medicine, it's 8 days, not 14. This is set by the |algo=old(8d) parameter of the {{User:MiszaBot/config}} template. --Redrose64 (talk) 21:42, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
"Threads older than 14 days are automatically archived."
top. Care to change it?96.52.0.249 (talk) 00:32, 20 June 2015 (UTC)
The bot ignores whatever is displayed in the {{MedTalkheader}} box, which in any case is informative, not prescriptive. --Redrose64 (talk) 07:28, 20 June 2015 (UTC)

NPOV Noticeboard archiving

As I assume you run the bot that archives the Noticeboard, I was wondering if you would restore the WWE Global Warning issue back to the Noticeboard. It needs to be investigated. Thanks. Curse of Fenric (talk) 10:08, 21 June 2015 (UTC)

@Curse of Fenric:, unarchiving things is not his job or responsibility; the bot archives a lot of things. If you believe a thread was archived prematurely then feel free to unarchive it manually or start a new thread and link to the old thread from there. — Jeraphine Gryphon (talk) 10:19, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
Oh okay. I was hesitant to do it myself because I thought it was an admin's job. Thanks. Curse of Fenric (talk) 11:19, 21 June 2015 (UTC)

Lowercase sigmabot and protection-tagging pages

Hi! Is Lowercase sigmabot still in charge of adding {{pp}} tags to articles and such? It doesn't seem to have added {{pp}} tags to some articles that were protected in the last 24 hours (indeed, it doesn't seem to have done anything since late 2014), and I was wondering if it was no longer working... If Lowercase sigmabot is no longer in charge of handling {{pp}} article tags, would you happen to know which bot took that job over? Thanks in advance... --IJBall (contribstalk) 19:47, 21 June 2015 (UTC)

At some point the bot broke and I never got the time to fix it, as I am currently incredibly occupied by real life.
As of right now, there are nebulous plans for the bot to be restored to its previous working state by Christmas. The updates to the {{pp}} template make this much more trivial. Σσς(Sigma) 03:25, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for the wonderful update to ¯\_(ツ)_/¯'s page. E. Lee (talk) 03:39, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

It appears that lowercase sigmabot III is not archiving lately.

Does the bot frequently take breaks that I simply never noticed or has something changed? Thanks. Dustin (talk) 05:26, 26 June 2015 (UTC)

Looks like it came back online and started archiving, c. midnight of 26 June... --IJBall (contribstalk) 23:45, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
It ran for a bit on 26 June, then it stopped again. The last edit visible now is 12:46 on 26 June. According to Special:Contributions/Lowercase sigmabot III. EdJohnston (talk) 18:39, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
Back in business again, starting at 19:15 on 27 June. Let's hope it's all set for now. EdJohnston (talk) 21:12, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

Bug in routine?

Just came across Special:Diff/537641330 - Lowercase sigmabot at one point was adding the wrong protection template (the template was semi'd - upgraded to template protection by me today - and the bot added {{pp-template}} incorrectly). Not sure if fixed or not. - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 16:06, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

Edits, that are two years old, by a bot that hasn't been, and currently isn't, consistently editing for over a year, aren't really a concern for me right now. A few threads ago I mentioned how the changes to {{pp}} would make it easier to fix the bot. I will fix it soon. Σσς(Sigma) 18:27, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
@Penwhale: Please note that {{pp-template}} is not specifically for use on template-protected pages, but on templates that are under any level of protection (semi, template or full), where no other prot icon template is suitable. {{Hlist}} uses {{documentation}}; and in general, any template that uses either {{documentation}} or {{collapsible option}} does not need explicit prot icon templates as well, since those two templates display a padlock when applicable; consequently, I removed that icon template four days later as unnecessary. --Redrose64 (talk) 18:36, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

Inconsistent/irregular archival at WP:ANEW

Hi Σ. I've noticed that archival is not being done consistently at WP:ANEW. I keep having to archive manually, but every once in a while the bot will come by and do it correctly. Is there any particular reason or known issue behind this? —Darkwind (talk) 04:07, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

You should give specific symptoms about what is insonsistent or irregular so he can dig it further. — regards, Revi 08:38, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
It archives some days and doesn't archive other days. Since the first of June, archiving was missed/skipped between 6/6 and 6/12 (6 days missed), 6/17-18 (2 days), 6/20, 6/25, 6/27-28 (2 days), 6/30-7/3 (4 days), and 7/5-6 (2 days), for a total of 18 missed days out of the last 36 - a 50% failure rate. The page is set to old(48h), and receives at least one new report per day, so it should be archiving almost every day. —Darkwind (talk) 19:41, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I don't see | minthreadstoarchive settings, which tells LCSB3 to skip the page if the value is below the threshold. Since it is not set, its' default is 2. Check back if there is more than 2 sections to archive on that dates. Maybe this could answer that behavior. — regards, Revi 10:01, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

Reference to Archive

Regarding to this your bot archiving - as I understand a ref to 'Archive 1' at main Talk page should be created as well. Isn't it? --Igorp_lj (talk) 15:07, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

The link to the archive is visible there already, look at the talkheader template at the top of the page. Though an {{archives}} box can be added there as well. — Jeraphine Gryphon (talk) 15:23, 7 July 2015 (UTC)
Hmm, now I do see it as 'Archive 1' (in the middle) as well as 'Search archives' window below. May be after refreshing? ):)
Thank you, --Igorp_lj (talk) 16:02, 7 July 2015 (UTC)
