Hello Evangeline. In French, for reasons the French know better than I, there are no accents written on capital letters! Never! So, please stop mis-correcting things here!!!!! You are rather a vandal, I suppose, or a small child. Edit articles if you have any information to add, do not worry about the accents. Ask somebody at the Académie Française maybe, to get an expert opinion on this matter. Kraxler 01:47, 24 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I am replying here, rather than your talk page, because of the comment above. As we know, User:Kraxler is completely wrong. I posted a reply to him for you on his talk page: User Talk:Kraxler. Please continue your good work. Charvex 11:03, 13 August 2007 (UTC) (Please delete both of our messages and make this page your own.)Reply

I apologize for having called you a vandal. I just would like to explain one thing, when writing the name as a sorting criterion for the alphabetic order of the articles in a Category-page, do not use any accents or cedillas, because it does not influence the alphabetical order in English. For example, if you write "Category:French cities|Évian" this would be sorted somewhere at the end after cities beginning with Z, so you have to write "....|Evian" to have it sorted at the cities beginning with E. License tagging for Image:Bettiol France M-18 Saison 2005-2006.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Bettiol France M-18 Saison 2005-2006.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

Zinedine Zidane

edit

Hi, I noticed you moved these pages to include the accents. It turns out that this move has been discussed considerably and the consensus is to keep the pages named without the accent. There is a preponderance of evidence that the name without the accent is the correct one, and Zidane himself seems to think so (see talk page). hope this helps, and if you have any more questions please feel free to ask here or on my talk page. -- Deville (Talk) 15:52, 19 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, the thing is Malika Zidane explained herself that the name of her son was written correctly with the accent. So that's why i am part of those thinking that the most correct spelling is with the accent.
Well, it turns out that there is some controversy about what the correct name should be, and many editors have discussed this (and other) issues involving Zidane's name a lot. If you think it should be changed, at this point the best thing to do is to go to the talk page at Talk:Zinedine Zidane and add your arguments as to why the name should be changed. If you can convince people then it will be alright to move it.
Also, it's best if you sign your posts on talk pages with four tildes, like this: ~~~~; this will put your name and a timestamp on the comment. Also, since it looks like noone ever welcomed you officially, I'll put the welcome template down below: it has many useful links for a starting Wikipedian. -- Deville (Talk) 16:15, 19 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Page move

edit

If you want to copy a page to a new location, please use the "Move" function, and not start a new article and convert the old one to a redirect manually like you did for Étienne Aymonier. If you use the move the editing history of the article stays correct, and it will not look like you start the article from scratch yourself. I have already fixed it for that case, now the original article is at the new place. andy 16:55, 19 September 2006 (UTC) Ok. Sorry for that. I'll remember it. French spellings

edit

Please stop moving these articles. Most people in English-speaking countries called Genevieve spell it without the grave. If they spell it without the grave then so do we. It would be incorrect to spell it with the accent. The name in English is pronounced Jen-a-veev, so the accent is inappropriate anyway. -- Necrothesp 18:36, 2 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Once again, please stop. This is English Wikipedia, not French Wikipedia. Any more mass changing of names to incorrect spellings and I will consider a block for vandalism. -- Necrothesp 18:58, 2 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

"What can be considered as" a suburb...

edit

Hello Évangéline,

I'm curious about how people from the Paris area represents to themselves the place they live in. I've been very surprized by some of your edits, where you obviously don't want to mention several municipalities of the Paris urban area as being suburbs of Paris. Today, you've made a change on the Nanterre page to describe it as "what could be considered as a suburb". I've reverted it for the obvious reason that such a wording isn't very encyclopaedic. Nevertheless, I'm curious to know why you only reluctantly accept the fact that Nanterre is a suburb of Paris. If this particularly interests me, it's because you're not alone, many people from the Paris area don't want their place to be considered as a suburb, even if technically there's no doubt that they are.

Paris is a very unique case when it goes about this. Things are a lot more appeased in the rest of the world, and even if it can more or less exist in some other French cities (Lille, Lyon), it never reaches the same level. During the last 150 years, Paris has considerably grown while its institutionnal borders remained unchanged, something which is somewhat unique for a city of its size. And instead of asking for a more coherent management, it seems as much politicians than average citizens want to affirm even more the difference. This is a phenomenon of tribalization of a Western European metropolis which is difficult to rationalize.

If this is a matter of identity as we can naturally guess, do you believe that Nanterre is losing something in admitting that it's a suburb of Paris ? Or maybe what disturbs you is the fact that Nanterre is too "urban" to be considered as "suburban" ? If this is the second case, don't you believe that the urban area would win more in unifying and hence accepting its "urban" nature rather than in balkanizing itself even more ? And, after all, is the Paris region really a "region" or is it a city which doesn't assume itself as such ?

Anyway, I would really appreciate if you could explain me what's your point of view about this. Thanks in advance. Metropolitan 22:22 2 November 2006 (UTC).

Greetings Évangéline, I've re-instated your excellent and informative edit. There was absolutely nothing wrong with your edit and it is vastly superior over what User:Metropolitan reverted to in that it added more information about where Nanterre is located. Thanks for improving that article. (Netscott) 16:06, 7 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sorry Netscott but Évangéline edits were more approximative, less encyclopaedic and less concise. I've reverted it back to its former version. It was adding absolutely no information at all. By the way, the question I've asked to Évangéline is valuable to you too. Why are you so embarassed about the fact Paris has suburbs ? What disturbs you in that fact ?Metropolitan 16:01, 7 november 2006 (UTC).
I'm bothered by those like yourself who want to follow their own notions of the limits of the "Ville de Paris" as you do. I'm also bothered by editors like yourself who just blindly undo beneficial edits. See Talk:Nanterre. Such blind undoing of beneficial editing is very improper. (Netscott) 17:19, 7 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
French definition of a suburb (i.e banlieue) according to wikipedia: "La banlieue est la zone périphérique urbanisée autour d'une grande ville."
1. Nanterre belongs to the Paris urban area according to the INSEE.
2. Nanterre isn't inside the city of Paris according to French official administration.
From points 1 and 2, I conclude that Nanterre is a suburb of Paris. As a result, I hardly understand how saying that it is "what could be considered as a suburb" is a beneficial edit. This is not a blind revert, this a revert sponsoring clarity and objectivity. I'm bothered with editors having troubles to describe the most accurately things as they are. Metropolitan 16:37, 7 november 2006 (UTC).

Paris is not a region at all but one of the "départemant" inside the Île-de-France "région". Nanterre is a city of its own, not some second-class Paris "arrondissement" (district more or less) but it is officialy in the Paris "urban area" (aire urbaine) indeed. During history Paris has often grown just arbitrarily (spelling?) "eating" cities around, maybe that's why cities around Paris and Paris itself wants facts to stay facts. One city is not another one, not part of another one and vice versa. And in French we say "to be IN the suburbs of one city" to say a city is "A suburb" of another one is often considered as very pejorative. In a country with the rumoured highest number of communes in Western Europe, with citizen names for each single one of them, cities are a touchy subject. Localism is strong and people from one village already consider those from the neighbouring town as strangers...It's a bit of a stereotype, "something in the air" but that's still a strong undeniable tendency. We call this "esprit de clocher". It's like saying the RER is the "Paris RER" when it's for the whole of Île-de-France even as his names says so "Réseau Express RÉGIONAL"... Your edits to Mélissa Theuriau

edit

I've reverted your edits to Mélissa Theuriau as interwiki links should only added where there is an article for that subject. For example, I've left a link in for the French wiki, as there's an article there for Theuriau. However, there isn't one for her on the Italian wiki, so there should be no interwiki link for that wiki.

Also, you've added in that Theuriau is from the proposed Arpitania region. Could you substantiate this? She was born near Grenoble, which is in Rhône-Alpes - a région too far south to be part of Arpitania.

On this basis, I've reverted all of your edits. Feel free to add back the Arpitan claim if it can be substantiated. Thanks. robwingfield «TC» 00:00, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

The whole of Isère (département) is considered to be within Arpitania even if the whole of Rhône Alpes isn't (yet, only because its most Western borders are seen as "intermediary" (sp?) where both what is today called French is mixed with Occitan and Arpitan... So to say Grenoble which is really one of the most Arpitan city (i'll suggest to you to go see the others articles on Arpitany if you can read other languages) isn't Arpitan just because the whole of the official Rhône-Alpes region isn't indeed is a bad way to approach the problem. I'll go see the English article on Arpitany to see what is written to have made you believe such a weird thing that Grenoble (the third or second biggest Arpitan city if i remember correctly) isn't Arpitan... But i understand for the interwikis though...Sorry. Évangéline 01:19, 16 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
