The Angle Alliance was a heel wrestling stable headed by Kurt Angle (and briefly Christian Cage on a self-proclaimed basis) in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. For Lockdown 2008, in the absence of Kurt from the stable's activities, Tomko captained a subdivision under the name "Team Tomko".

Formation edit

On November 11, 2007 at TNA's Genesis pay-per-view (PPV) event, reigning TNA World Tag Team Champions Christian's Coalition (A.J. Styles and Tomko) aided reigning TNA World Heavyweight Champion Kurt Angle in his tag team match with Kevin Nash against the team of Sting and Booker T. As a result, Angle retained the championship.[1] Reasoning behind this action was due to an agreement between Styles, Tomko, and Angle's wife, Karen. A storyline began revolving around this alliance and Coalition leader Christian Cage, as Styles and Tomko acted without Cage's consent. On the November 15, 2007 episode of TNA's television program TNA Impact!, Styles and Tomko joined Angle in creating The Angle Alliance, while remaining tied to Cage.[2] Styles followed by trying to join the two fractions together in the weeks after. Also on the November 15 episode of Impact!, Management Director Jim Cornette announced by request of Nash and Scott Hall that a Six Man Tag Team match pitting The Angle Alliance of Angle, Styles and Tomko against Nash, Hall, and a mystery member, later revealed as Samoa Joe, would be held on December 2, 2007 at TNA's Turning Point PPV event.[2] The Angle Alliance lost the bout at the event against Joe, Nash, and Eric Young, who replaced Hall as he no-showed the event.[3] On the December 6, 2007 episode of Impact!, Angle asked Cage and Robert Roode to join the alliance, with Roode accepting and Cage accepting only after the condition that he became the leader. Angle agreed, however later in the episode Angle and Roode attacked Cage, kicking him out of the group.[4] Due to this, on the December 20, 2007 episode of Impact! TNA promoted a TNA World Heavyweight Championship match between Angle and Cage for their Final Resolution PPV event on January 6, 2008.[5] Leading up to Final Resolution, it was questioned in storyline whose side Styles and Tomko were on in the feud. On the December 27, 2007 episode of Impact!, Tomko left both groups, intending to be his own man.[6] At Final Resolution, Styles and Tomko successfully defended the TNA World Tag Team Championship against the team of Nash and Joe. Later in the main event between Cage and Angle, Styles sided with Angle by attacking Cage during the bout, thus costing Cage the championship.[7] On the January 17, 2008 episode of Impact!, Cage, Joe, and Styles competed in a Three Way match, in which the winner would get a TNA World Heavyweight Championship match against Angle at TNA's Against All Odds PPV event on February 10, 2008, however if Styles won he could chose instead of the title match to allow Angle to not have to defend his title for two months. Cage ended up winning the contest, thus becoming the number one contender.[8] On the January 24, 2008 episode of Impact!, Management Director Jim Cornette announced that Joe would be the Special Outside Enforcer at Against All Odds due him being controversially disqualified during the match.[9] On the January 31, 2008 episode of Impact!, Tomko defeated Angle after interference from Cage.[10] This resulted in Tomko and Cage seeming to be on the same page on the February 7, 2008 episode of Impact!.[11] Styles and Tomko went on to Against All Odds to successfully defend the TNA World Tag Team Championship against B.G. James and Bob Armstrong, who used James' Feast or Fired title shot to gain the match. Also at Against All Odds, Tomko interfered during the TNA World Heavyweight Championship match attacking Cage, thus, like Styles, also cost Cage the championship.[12] On the February 14, 2008 episode of Impact!, Tomko announced he attacked Cage because he no longer wanted an alliance with Cage and felt he could become a star on his own. Tomko then joined The Angle Alliance later on the same episode after making it clear to Angle he was doing it out of his best interests, not Angle's.[13]

Lockdown edit

On the February 21, 2008 episode of Impact! during a backstage segment between Joe and Cornette, it was announced that The Angle Alliance (Angle, Styles, and Tomko) would face the team of Joe, Cage, and Nash, under the title "The Unlikely Alliance", at TNA's Destination X PPV event on March 9, 2008 in a Six Man Tag Team match.[14] On the March 6, 2008 episode of Impact!, the participants in the bout fought in matches to determine who would get a five minute man advantaged at Destination X. Nash defeated Styles, Tomko defeated Joe in a First Blood match, and Cage defeated Angle in a Six Sides of Steel Cage match, leaving it two to three, with The Unlikely Alliance gaining the advantage.[15] The Unlikely Alliance defeated The Angle Alliance at Destination X.[16]


Disintegration edit

Accusing Styles of stealing Karen away whilst having no proof, Kurt Angle and Tomko then aligned with Team 3D as part of a loose collective of "bad guys" which at times had also included mostly every single important public enemy on the TNA roster at the time, most frequently Booker T, Johnny Devine, The Beautiful People (Angelina Love and Velvet Sky) and Kurt's mixed martial artist friend Frank Trigg. Tomko later left TNA and came back for one last appearance, while Kurt eventually moved on to form a pact with several wrestling legends within TNA, creating the stable known as the Main Event Mafia.

The Angle Alliance had a one night reunion on the December 17th edition of Impact! in what was supposed to be a 10 man tag team match with Bobby Lashley and Abyss but ended up turning into essentially a 3-on-2 handicap match against the British Invasion after Lashley and Abyss took off with their then-rivals Scott Steiner, Dr. Stevie and Raven. Tomko, Angle, and Styles ended up winning the match after Styles pinned Brutus Magnus with a small package, only for Styles and Angle to be attacked afterward by Christopher Daniels and Desmond Wolferespectively.
