Contact Gallery, Norwich 1986-1999 Initially an artists' lead co-operative, Norfolk Artists Gallery Ltd., leased a relatively small two storey shop (a modern rebuild of an old premises largely of steel and glass) at 56 St Benedicts Street, Norwich, England from Norwich City Council and opened an art gallery from 1986 to 1999. The organisation became a Charity in the mid. 1990's, no 254667R. It was called Contact Gallery because the aim was to promote contemporary art in Norfolk, where at the time, there were very few venues showing contemporary work. The gallery fulfilled the aim by being a dedicated gallery 52 weeks of the year on a shopping street to attract as many attendees as possible.
The funding by a regional arts council grant was initially used to hold a series of exhibitions in St Gregorys, a redundant local church already used for music concerts, to promote the idea and raise funds to pay for the first quarter's lease. Financial funding for the 13 years of the gallery's exist ace came from Eastern Arts Council Revenue Grants, donations, exhibition sponsorship, commission from sales, artists' contributions and fund raising events supported by "Friends of the Gallery".
