The New Panama City-Bay County International Airport is the tentative name for a new airport currently being constructed north of Panama City Beach, Florida. The new airport is a relocation of the exisiting Panama City-Bay County International Airport located in Panama City, Florida and has a projected opening date of Memorial Day 2010. It will be the first international airport designed and constructed since the September 11, 2001 Attacks, and as a result will be a test bed for new security measures and technologies developed by the Department of Homeland Security and Naval Support Activity Panama City

Background edit

Starting in the late 1990s, the Panama City-Bay County Airport and Industrial District (Airport Authority) started looking for options in order to increase the air service in the Panama City area. Proposed ideas were to include utilizing the current airport property and extending the current short runways either into St. Andrews Bay or into residential neighborhoods, relocation of the airport to a new site or colocation with Tyndall AFB. With strong opposition to extending the current runways into an environmentally senstive bay or into neighborhoods, the airport authority began to search for suitible relocation sites. Moving forward, the authority recieved a tentative approval to relocate the airport to northern Bay County in 2001. In 2005-2007 the authority proceeded with gaining all of the permits needed, while in 2008 the airport saw numerous legal challenges against it from environmental groups. Each of the court cases were cleared and construction of the new airport proceeded.

Costs edit

Among many residents in Bay County there were concerns about financing the costs of the new airport. There were many indiviudals oppossed to the relocation which voiced their concerns in a non-binding referendum which resulted in a "No" vote. However, as it was non-binding it had no effect on the construction progress. Due to this the airport authority had to guarantee that there would be no local funds used for $330 million price tag associated with this project. At the time construction started, the funding breakdown resulted in roughly 1/3 Federal Funds, 1/3 State Funds, and 1/3 Airport Authority revenues, including the sale of the exisiting airport property.

Facilities edit

Terminal edit

The new airport will feature a much larger and modern terminal compared to the current terminal at the current airport location. The terminal when constructed will be 105,000 sq. feet and have seven gates, most of which will be equiped with jet bridges. In addition, the airport will also have a US Customs and Border Protection inspection facility to process passengers arriving from international flights. It is anticipated that the new terminal building will attain a LEED rating for being a green building as well.

General Aviation edit

General Aviation will be handled at the purpose build general aviation facility that will be built south of the main passenger terminal.

Air Cargo edit

An air cargo facility will be located at the new airport. It is expected that FedEx will use the facility along with other cargo airlines.

The UCF College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) is one of the 11 colleges that are part of the University of Central Florida, located in Orlando, FL USA. It is within CECS that several of the University’s showcase majors and research are located, as well as being one of the largest Colleges at UCF. The Dean is Neal C. Gallagher.

The college is structured into three divisions, in which the individual department and schools are located. These three divisions are the Engineering and Computer Science Division, the Engineering Technology Division and the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Division. Combined these consitituent parts of the college offer over 100 degree programs offered at the Undergraduate, Graduate, and Postgraduate Levels.

Engineering and Computer Science Division edit

This division includes most of the students who are in an EECS program.

Harris Corporation Engineering Center

The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is primarily located on the main Orlando campus within the newly constructed Harris Corporation Engineering Center (commonly referred to as Engineering III), where classrooms, labs and offices for the School’s three primary areas: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Computer Science. It is the only school within CECS with all other divisions of the college are considered departments due to the number of students majoring in the school’s disciplines. As of 2007, Issa Batarseh is the director of the school.

The school was founded upon the merging of the School of Computer Science and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering in

At it’s disposal is a host of teaching and research labs, primarily located in the Engineering III Building, and some located in area it previously occupied in Engineering I, the original engineering building at UCF. For undergraduate students there are labs for electronics, digital circuits, RF transmission, various computer labs and labs for students to use during their senior design course. On the graduate and research side there are labs ranging from artificial intelligence to computational imaging and is even home to the Florida Power Electronics Center.
