Naming conventions for German football clubs

A number of common terms appear frequently in the names of German football teams that often reflect the interests and history of a club.

In the mid-19th century German sport was dominated by the ideas of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn known in the country as Turnvater Jahn, the father of gymnastics. After the formation of the first facility in Berlin in 1811 the Turnverein (gynmastics association) movement quickly spread across Prussia and other German states.

Association football, or soccer, originated in England in 1863 and quickly spread to Germany and continental Europe at the same time other "English" sports including rugby, which shared a common origin with football, and cricket.
