Introduction edit

Indika Wickramarachchi (born January 21, 1973), commonly known as Indika Wickramarachchi, is a Sri Lankan film director, playwright, scriptwriter, actor, editor, and educator. He currently serves as a teacher at St. Sebastian’s College in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, specializing in Drama & Theater and Sinhala literature. Wickramarachchi is recognized as a national artist in Sri Lanka.

Early Life and Education: Indika Wickramarachchi was born on January 21, 1973, in Kalutara, Sri Lanka. He attended Ganodaya Maha Vidyalaya in Kalutara for his early education. For higher education, Wickramarachchi pursued a diploma in Writership and Communication Examination from the University of Sri Jayawardanapura, a diploma in Photography from the University of Kelaniya, a B.A from the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka, a BSc Edu from Aldersgate College in the Philippines, and completed a Drama and Theater Acting Practical Workshop at Karunalaya Campus in India. He is currently undertaking a Post Graduate Diploma in Education at the University of Colombo. Wickramarachchi also pursued various film-related courses and workshops, including film-making courses at OCIC Sri Lanka and the National Film Corporation of Sri Lanka, as well as participating in documentary film workshops.

Wickramarachchi began his career in filmmaking as an assistant director on the short film "Thurpthi," directed by Ariyarathna Withana in 1992. He directed his first short film, "Awarin pa Hiru," in the same year. Since then, he has directed several short films, telefilms, documentaries, and feature films, including "Why" (1998), "Eradu Dandu (The Rootles)" (1998), "Hiru Udawela" (2000), "Me & Me" (2005), "Run Daughter Run" (2012/2013), "Sakee" (2019), "Live Together with Corona" (2020), and "The Kite" (2020).

Teaching Career edit

In addition to his filmmaking endeavors, Wickramarachchi is a dedicated educator. He currently teaches Drama & Theater and Sinhala literature at St. Sebastian’s College in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.

Personal Life edit

Indika Wickramarachchi is married to Manjula Saman Kumari, who is also an actress and a teacher.

Recognition edit

Wickramarachchi's work has been recognized both nationally and internationally. His short film "Run Daughter Run" won the Best Short Film Award at the NFC Sri Lanka in 2012/2013. "Live Together with Corona" was selected for the International Moving Film Festival and received the Critics’ Choice Award for Best International Short Film at the URUVATTI International Film Festival. Additionally, it was an Official Selection at the International Cultural Artifact Film Festival in 2020.
