Peter Bree (Driebergen-Rijsenburg, 23 september 1949) is a Dutch radio presenter and oboist.
He studied English Language and Literature at Groningen University and subsequently, from 1973 oboe at the Amsterdam Muzieklyceum (the present Amsterdam Conservatoire) with Han de Vries. After obtaining his solo degree in 1979 and cor anglais and chamber degrees in 1981 he continued his studies in London with Neil Black.
Peter Bree was a Master of English at various grammar schools in Amsterdam between till 1977 when he was appointed Principal Oboist in one of the Dutch radio orchestras, a position he relinquished in 1979 to be able to concentrate fully on a solo career and chamber music. From 1979 till 1994 he was a free-lance oboist, making various radio and CD recordings, among which compositions that were dedicated to him (from among others Edmund Rubbra, Jan Koetsier and Ruud Bos) and the complete oboe sonatas of French composer François Devienne that he edited and published together with Dr Bernard Rose. In 1981 he received the Silver 'Vriendenkrans' Award of the Society of Friends of the Concertgebouw and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra[1]. In 1994 he decided to end his active musical career in order to concentrate fully on his radio activities.
Peter Bree was a radio producer for AVRO Radio from 1980 till 1983, and then continued as a radio presenter and producer for Veronica Radio (1984-1992), for commercial Concert Radio (1994-1998), and returned to AVRO Radio in 1998[2]. From 1984 till the end of 2010 he was one of the main presenters of classical music programmes and live concerts on the Dutch classical public radio channel [[Radio 4 (Netherlands)].
In 1980 he was, together with Yehudi Menuhin one of the founders of Live Music Now in the Netherlands; he served from 1980 until its demise in 1985 as vice-chairman on the Board of this foundation. From 1987 he has been chairman of the board of the baroque orchestra The Academy of the Begijnhof, Amsterdam. From 2001 till 2009 he was a member of the board and chairman of the artistic committee of The Netherlands Bach Society.
