Sidney Carter (artist)

Sydney Carter, son of artist Richard Carter, was born in Enfield, England in 1874 and resided in South Africa from 1923. Mr Carter is considered a painter of portraits and landscapes, generally incorporating trees. He has been known to work in oil and gouache and is also cartoonist.

In 1924, he was elected a fellow of the Cape Town Society of Arts and Crafts and began teaching at the Witwatersrand Technical College in 1927. He also illustrated several editions of works be Charles Dickens, Jane Austin and Charlotte Bronte. South African illustrations include Dorothea Fairbridge.

He participated in several group exhibitions from 1984 in London, Paris and SA along with numerous solo exhibitions throughout South Africa- 1974 Pretoria Art Museum, Commemorative exhibition 1949 Gainsborough Gallery, Johannesburg, Commemorative exhibition

His public commissions include five landscape murals in Jeppe Street Post Office, Johannesburg in 1936 and two murals in Cape Town Post Office in 1938

He is represented at the Africana Museum, Johannesburg, Albany Museum, Grahamstown, Ann Bryant Gallery, East London, Durban Art Gallery, Johannesburg Art Gallery, National Museum Bloemfontein, Pretoria Art Museum, South Africa National Gallery Cape Town, University of Pretoria and William Humphreys Art Gallery, Kimberley.

Studies 1889 Buckhurst Hill Art School, England; 1890-95 Walthamstow School of Art, London, gaining an Art Teachers Certificate; 1896 National Art Training School, London; 1897-99 Royal College of Art, London, where he was awarded a British Institute Scholarship.

Profile A member of the London Sketch Club and the Johannesburg Sketch Club. 1924 elected a Fellow of the Cape Town Society of Artists; 1925 Vice-President of the Orange Free State Society of Arts and Crafts. 1927 began teaching at the Witwatersrand Technical College. Illustrated, in a similar style to that of Arthur Rackham editions of works by authors such as Charles Dickens, Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte. In SA illustrated books by Dorothea Fairbridge, including the well-known Skiddle. Travelled extensively in SA. Son of the artist Richard Carter.

Awards 1890 Bronze Medal for Drawing from the Antique, 1989 the Gilbert Garret Prize for Landscape.
