Gatewood Elementary School is an elementary school located in the Gatewood neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, USA. The school serves students from Pre-K (3+ yrs) through 5th grade as part of the Seattle Public Schools district.
History
editClasses in Gatewood began inside a barn in 1908, then moved to a portable building a few blocks away one year later. In 1910, the Gatewood school building was constructed, and became the third-oldest school in West Seattle. The building was later expanded in 1922, and served as a prominent landmark for the neighborhood.
The school shut down operations from 1989-1991 as the building received major renovation costing $5.1 million. The walls were reinforced, the 1922 additions removed, and new facilities were created: a gymnaisum, classroom wing, and auditorium/lunchroom.[1]
