History

edit

The school was established in the year 1903[2] alongside Kingsway College in Lorne Park (a neighbourhood in southwestern Mississauga). College Park Elementary and Kingsway College ran as one school known as Lornedale Academy. In 1912 the school relocated to Oshawa, and quickly grew. The school had 5 teachers and offered grades 5-13. The enrolment was recorded as 4 students in elementary school, and 25 students in high school.[3] The enrolment kept growing, and so a separate building was constructed to accommodate for the elementary school in the 1940's. This first seperate building is still standing today as the Family Studies building on the current campus. In the late 1960's, Kingsway College asked College Park Church to take over ownership of College Park Elementary School. In the year 1972, the elementary school was relocated to its present location on the campus.[4] As churches began to emerge out of College Park Church they became constituent supporters of both College Park Elementary and Kingsway College.

"The operation of our school is subsidized by the Ontario Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and our four constituent Seventh-day Adventist churches: [Bowmanville SDA Church, Bowmanville; College Park SDA Church, Oshawa; Kendalwood SDA Church, Whitby; and New Life SDA Church, Oshawa.] As a result there are three different rates of tuition which are dependent upon the subsidy each family is eligible for."[5]

Clubs

edit

The school offers a hockey program called Taking to the Ice which runs for 14 weeks, and also a Ski & Snowboarding club in the winter.

Positive Paws

edit

" ...finally the committee has instituted another preventative program called “Positive Paws”. Each student at CPES is assigned to a House Colour and when a student is “caught” doing acts of kindness they will receive a “Paw”. They can add it to their house colour container at the end of the day. The house colour with the most tickets at the end of the month will receive a small token of appreciation for being the House of the Month." - CPES Student Handbook[8]
