The UCT Choir (or University of Cape Town Choir) is a fully student-run ensemble at the University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa. It has the distinction of being the most diverse musical group on campus.[1] The UCT Choir welcomes students from every faculty and discipline as well as UCT alumni and international students from across the globe.
The forty-person choir, currently under the direction of John Woodland, was founded in 1985.[2] The UCT Choir exposes its singers and its audiences to a rich variety of a cappella works from early classical to contemporary genres, both sacred and secular, especially compositions by local composers. The choir has toured extensively around the country and hopes to make its international debut soon.[1] Annual events include participation in the Last Night of the Proms charity concerts in the Cape Town City Hall, a winter concert at St Paul’s Church in Rondebosch, a traditional choral service at St. George's Cathedral and various other performances, on campus and around Cape Town. The year always ends with the choir’s showcase ‘Jammie Concert’ in Jameson Hall on UCT’s Upper Campus.[1] The UCT Choir is occasionally invited to sing the South African national anthem at intervarsity matches hosted by the Ikey Tigers, UCT’s rugby union team.[3]

2010 edit
In 2010 the UCT Choir celebrated its 25th anniversary.[2] The UCT Choir provided the soundtrack to the exhibition ‘Made in Translation’ at the Iziko South African Museum by recording a new CD.[4][5] In September they premiered a setting of the Nunc dimittis by Swiss composer Ivo Antognini at evensong in St. George's Cathedral.[6]
2011 edit
The UCT Choir recently opened the stage for Sir David Attenborough at an open lecture hosted by the Vice-Chancellor.[7] They also performed at the opening of ‘the names we give’, a conference hosted by the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (Gipca) at UCT.[8][9] In May the UCT Choir released its first CD which features music from its 25th anniversary year.
