Rainclouds is a post-hardcore music project from Grand Rapids, Michigan started in 2010 by Tyler Davis. Some influences include August Burns Red, Periphery, The Plot In You, Underoath, and The Devil Wears Prada.

History

Formation and early Too Visible era(2010–2011)

When the project began in November of 2010 it was known as Ever Say Ever and after only a few of months the title changed to Too Visible. It wasn't until the summer of 2011 that the name became Rainclouds, near the end of recording Changing Color. In November to December 2010 the first few songs were written and recorded, those being called Inverse, Caps Lock, Build Rebuild, and Winter. After these songs were written and recorded, January 2011 was spend writing and recording eight other songs to complete an album called The Winter After as Too Visible. The months following the completion of The Winter After, writing on the next album began. With The Winter After being done in such a short period of time and not as much thought, the following album, eventually known as Escape Myself to Find Myself, was an attempt to slightly slow down the writing process to make time to experiment with other sounds. Escape Myself to Find Myself was eventually completed around May of 2011. Both The Winter After and Escape Myself to Find Myself with both likely remain unreleased. During the summer of 2011 no work was done for an album but a few songs were written and recorded. These included Lift Your Heart Up, Fade, and Bright As Day. These songs, especially Fade, greatly helped with finding a sound. Fade was meant to be a metaphorical story told throughout the song with the music giving off the atmosphere of the lyrics and of a setting. This laid out much of the style found in future songs. Many of the early Too Visible era songs may eventually be rerecorded for an upcoming album.

Changing Color and Warmth in This Cold Air We Call Home (2011–2012)

In September 2011 there was an idea for an album based on the months of the year. There would be one song a month, using the entirety of each month to write and record one song. For example, the song October would start being written in October and finish being written and recorded before the end of the month. Starting in September with a previously recorded intro to the album, there would be 12 songs, each with a feel like the month they are named after and lyrics based on events and thoughts during that month. Part of this idea was a way to slow down the writing process even further in order to write more complex and thought out songs. On the unreleased album The Winter After, there was a song called August, and this also helped with the idea for the project. The August from that album was rerecorded and used and the final track of the "Months" album which eventually became known as Changing Color. With the writing and recording of Changing Color taking place from September 2011 to August 2012, those were not the only songs written. In the early months of Changing Color, additional songs were written for a separate album called Warmth in This Cold Air We Call Home. This album would contain new songs as well as re-recordings of songs from The Winter After and Escape Myself to Find Myself. The new songs were Breathe in the Sea, The Pieces Fit, and the title track Warmth in This Air We Call Home. This project was eventually abandoned, but many songs many still appear on a future album.

Pathways and tentatively titled Empty Hearts & Sinking Ships (2012–2013)

In the summer of 2012, near the end of the writing of Changing Color, another project meant to be heavier and influenced by horror themes began known as Pathways. With Changing Color and past work lyrically being more about personal experiences, Pathways is meant to be more based on opinions and thoughts about society. All of the instrumental tracks of Pathways have been completed as of early 2013, but lyrically it has yet to be finished. Pathways was heavily influenced by bands like The Acacia Strain and The Plot In You. With the Changing Color project coming to an end in August, a similar project was started for the next year. This would also be one song a month for a year to make for more complex and thought out writing, but this time with no restrictions sound-wise or lyrically. Naturally, the project will end in August 2013. This project eventually became known as Empty Hearts & Sinking Ships, but is subject to change.

Currently Untitled next album (2013–Present)

In April 2013 work on another album began. It is meant to be more fast-paced and driving but with more of an uplifting feel in contrast to the more heavy and "creepy" sounding Pathways. Many different artists influence this, such as The Wonder Years, The Story So Far, and Title Fight, as well as heavier bands like The Ghost Inside. The new songs Refreshing Discovery and Ripple are currently done instrumentally, and older songs such as Winter, It's Been Days and the Storm Hasn't Passed Yet, Night, and Fade will likely be rerecorded for the album.

Equipment

For the majority of Changing Color and all of the rest of Rainclouds music a Peavey Vypyr amp has been used, and every Rainclouds song ever has been recorded using a PRS SE Paul Allender.

Tunings

The vast majority of Rainclouds songs use Drop C tuning, with the songs December, May, Trap Door, Where Falling Rain Was Never Seen, Chills, Cold Spots, Twisted, and Pathways having Drop Bb, It's Been Days and the Storm Hasn't Passed Yet being in Drop D, and November being in Standard D tuning.
