The novel is based in the city of Francistown, where the author was born. It starts with the main character, Brandon Chidzala, who narrates the story as a whole, narrating his experiences as a child in a flashback. Along with his peers, he had a dream of being a teenager ever since he was young. It is during this flashback that he introduces a few of the other characters. These include Esther Normans, his childhood crush. She, being the honeybee of the street he resided in, was a hard-to-get target for Brandon and his age-mates. He, however, manages to win her heart by buying her a simple doll he bought with his savings. The two eight years old kids then, officially, became 'boyfriend and girlfriend'. Their little fairytale is ended when she moves to another city. With a promise made to her that he would never date until they re-unite, he gets left behind in the relationships arena.

At his primary school leaving party, he meets Neo Motsweding, who talks to him about his long-lost love and makes him realize he has to move on. Come Junior High, he does after meeting Winona Simons. Their new, one-sided experience relationship is, however, rocked by external influences from the start. The biggest of these is Winona's abusive ex-boyfriend Mark Merritt, the school rugby team captain who is still after her. Then there is Samantha David, a senior popular girl who flirts her way in to Brandon's life.

Brandon also creates a legacy for himself through St. Wiz, a dance group he starts with his childhood best friend, Bagomotsi Moalosi and new buddy Botho Malokane, along with two of Botho's friends. The group also creates enemies and fans alike in the young city of Francistown for the John Mackenzie Junior High students. As the story unfolds, we get to see how fame, rivalries and love influence these teens' lives as they all live their childhood dream.
