It's On Us edit

This is an article I'm planning to create. First, I will start with explaining what this is.

“It’s On Us” (to stop sexual assault) is an organization created by Barak Obama [1] to raise awareness and fight against sexual assault on college campuses for both men and women. [2]

Goals

The goals of this organization are:

“ 1. To RECOGNIZE that non-consensual sex is sexual assault.

2. To IDENTIFY situations in which sexual assault may occur.

3. To INTERVENE in situations where consent has not or cannot be given.

4. To CREATE an environment in which sexual assault is unacceptable and survivors are supported.”

5. The organization is geared towards creating a social movement by asking people to take a “PLEDGE” against sexual assault." [3]

Supporters

Supporters of this organization include; Kerry Washington, Zoe Saldana, Nina Dobrev, Matt McGorry, John Cho, Jon Hamm, Connie Britton, and others. [4]

Partnerships

Here I will use this section to start discussing the vast amount of partners that "It's On Us" has partnered with. [5]

Background

In this section I will be discussing the background/history of sexual assault on college campuses to dive deeper into why this is an issue and how serious it is.

I will use this source to discuss how many sexual assaults happen on campus per year (statistics) and break it down by gender and age. 11.2% of all students attending college experience some form of sexual assault at one point in their college career and about 23% of undergrads experience sexual assault. [6]

The Campus Crime Statistics Act [7] was passed in 1990 [ProQuest Database Article 1] (Discuss what the Act is and entails, and why it is relevant to this article/organization).

Effects

Thinking about adding an effects section. Maybe discussing how well it has worked, what has the recent outcome been, and has the number of sexual assaults on college campuses declined?

Abortion Rights Movement edit

Poland

I will add a "Poland" section to the Abortion Rights Movement page where several other countries are listed. I am doing this because of the recent protests that have taken place in that country recently.

I will start by writing about how Poland initially held abortion to be legal in 1958, but was later banned in the 1980's. Currently, abortion is illegal in all cases except for rape or when the fetus or mother is in fatal conditions. [ProQuest Database Article 2] With this source I will discuss the affects religion (widely spread Catholicism) has on the social acceptance/non-acceptance of abortion [ProQuest Database Article 3] as well as the influence the Pope has. [ProQuest Database Article 4] I will next discuss important court cases within the history of Poland like Tysiac v Poland [ProQuest Database Article 5]. I will then use this information to relate it to woman's rights in Poland and how they have slowly lost several reproductive rights while gaining democratic rights. [ProQuest Database Article 6]. Consequently several protests have recently happened. I will use this source to elaborate on the size and effectiveness of these abortions. Then I will come to a conclusion on if they were successful or not. [8]

This country is important to add to the current list of countries that are listed on the abortion rights movement page because they are a prominent figure in the movement right now. The protests show the passion and activism and the Catholic Church poses a threat to that. I will also be looking into why religion has been so largely influential.

Girls Who Code edit

Since this article is very small I will be adding a lot of relevant information to it. The first thing I wanted to add was the founder's ideology behind the creation of this company. I will use her "TED Talk" to express her theory of how girls are raised. The founder of Girls Who Code, Reshma Saujani, believes that girls are raised to "be perfect" while boys are raised to "be brave". [9] After briefly describing her TED Talk and her views, I will mention the bias towards women in the tech industry. [Berkeley Database Article 1] I will next discuss the recent role Accenture has had with the company about the future of tech. [10]

Effects

I will then add to the effects of this program and discuss how it is helping to fix the gender gap within employment and especially within the tech industry. [11] [GenderWatch Database Article 1]

New Innovations

In this section I will be adding how Girls Who Code recently revealed that they will now feature an app on the app store. [12] This will increase popularity and get more people involved.

This is important to add because it is important to understand the views of the founder of the company nd provide Wiki readers with a link to hear that TED Talk themselves. I also think it is relevant to mention the current state of the company and their current/future plans like with the app.

Respond to Peer Review:

Thanks for the great feedback!

I can see how it kind of looks more like an outline. I definitely will be adding to it!

As far as the Its On Us article/campaign, I have decided that this will be where I create the bulk of my edits due to the fact that this does not have an article. My partner and I will be using several sources to create a new article that explains not only what the campaign is, but why it is important. I also will be working with my partner and going over our sources together and possibly collecting more while using a source who actually has a first-hand account of one of our movements.

Definitely will be adding an effects section to the its on us campaign. That is something very important to cover.

Final Articles:

"It's On Us" (to stop sexual assault) is a social movement created by Barack Obama and White House Council on Women and Girls to raise awareness and fight against sexual assault on college campuses for both men and women. This campaign urges the public stand up against sexual assault and step away from the sidelines to be an active part of the solution.

According to the statistics provided by Its On Us, 1 in 20 college males are sexually assaulted and 1 in 5 college females are sexually assaulted.[1]

History[edit | edit source] edit

Currently, only 4% of females are interested or enrolled in a computing program in college. [9] The founder of Girls Who Code, Reshma Saujani, believes that girls are raised to "be perfect" while boys are raised to "be brave".[10] Reshma Saujani participated in a TED Talk where she spoke about the consequences girls face in their future if they don't start taking risks.[11] She speaks of the tech industry and how she thinks there is a bias towards women in the industry. The company announced that in 2016 the non-profit organization will be expanding to all 50 states- making it the largest computing program for girls in the United States[12]

Poland initially held abortion to be legal in 1958, but was later banned in the 1980's. Currently, abortion is illegal in all cases except for rape or when the fetus or mother is in fatal conditions.[33] The wide spread of Catholicism within the country has made abortion socially 'unacceptable'[34] . The Pope has had major influence on the acceptance of abortion within Poland[35] . Several landmark court cases have had substantial influence on the current status of abortion, including Tysiac v Poland.[36]Women have suffered greatly within the country, they have slowly lost several reproductive rights while gaining democratic rights. rights.[37] Consequently, several protests have recently happened. Most recently, several women took to the street to protest the abortion ban on Black Monday.[38] Black Monday was not successful in changing the ban on abortion, however it raised awareness.[39]
