Transport for Greenville (TfG) is the local government body responsible for most aspects of the transport system in the Greater Greenville Area in South Carolina. Its role is to implement the transport strategy and to manage transport services across the Greater Greenville Area. Its head office is located in Greenville County Square.

History

edit

TfG was created in 2014 by way of the SC Local and Regional Transportation Act 2013. It gained most of its functions as a result of taking over the South Carolina Department of Transportation's responsibilities in the Greater Greenville Area.

Organisation

edit

TfG is controlled by a board of directors, named the Transport for Greenville Board of Directors, whose members are appointed representatives from the Greenville County Council and all municipial councils in Greenville County. The Greenville County Council appoints the Executive Director, the head of the board of directors, and two other members. The City of Greenville appoints two members, and the remaining municipalities appoint one member each.

The Commissioner of Transport for Greenville is elected every four years by Greenville County voters. The Commissioner is responsible for all operations of Transport for Greenville and reports to the Transport for Greenville Board of Directors.

Transport for Greenville is organized into four departments, each with responsibility for different aspects and modes of transport. Each department is headed by a :

  • Greenville Bus
    • Also known as Greenlink, this department is responsible for providing all bus services in the Transport for Greenville area.
  • Greenville Rail
    • This department is responsible for regulating all above ground rail activities in the Transport for Greenville area.
  • Greenville Highways
    • This department is responsible for the construction and maintanience of all streets and highways in the Transport for Greenville area.
  • Greenville Underground
    • This department is responsible for all operations of the Greenville Underground.

Fares

edit

Each department in Transport for Greenville is responsible for creating its own fare schedule. Single tickets may be purchased for a single use of one transport aspect, or reloadable travel cards may be used. Travel cards can be used on all transport aspects within Transport for Greenville.

Funding

edit

Fares only play a partial role in Transport for Greenville's funding. A large sum of funding comes from a 1% county sales tax. In 2014 an estimated $76,761,682 came from the sales tax alone. This combines with the estimated $2,500,000 from fares to give Transport for Greenville an estimated $79,261,628 budget for the 2014 year.
