The Titan Spectator is a newspaper run entirely by students in Salem, Oregon.

In publication since December 2014, the Titan Spectator is a student run physical and digital newspaper based at West Salem High School (Salem, Oregon) in Salem, Oregon. The Titan Spectator rose in popularity in the community during it's public during its 2019 funding termination fight.[2]

The Titan Spectator publishes a bimonthly issue during the Salem-Keizer School District school year, but stories are added daily to its website presence.[3]

The Titan Spectator's current Editor in Chief is Alec Palm as of 2020.[4][5]

History

edit

The Titan Spectator was founded by Casey Chaffin in September of 2015 as a club without funding at West Salem High School.[6][7]

Issue 1 Volume 1, was published using a google site in December of 2015. Without funding students resorted to using digital tools.[8]

In 2017 the Titan Spectator launched their infamous Instagram account which is now their largest social platform to date and their main tool of student body engagement.[9]

In 2019 after years of becoming a class students were informed that the Titan Spectator was being cut from the schools 2019-2020 budget. Students took to a very public fight with the school board, principal and superintendent.[10][11][12]

In 2020 the Titan Spectator became the first public high school newspaper to become verified on Facebook and Instagram. This was apart of the paper joining the Facebook Media program as a result for their statewide coverage of the 2020 United States elections.

In 2021 the Titan Spectator was once again in news headlines after Editor in Chief Alec Palm refused to be spotlighted by the Salem-Keizer School District School Board after they declined to feature fellow Editor in Chief for a damaging article about their campaign financial history. [13]
